What does it mean to be worthy? There are a few different ways to approach this question. Today’s Gospel highlights two: the way of the Pharisees and the way of John the Baptist. Our faith values good works and discipleship. Perhaps, then, we “earn” our worth by adhering to the right doctrines and following the right pious practice. The Pharisees thought they were worthy. Due to their religious pedigree and proper procedures, they were self-satisfied. John the Baptist’s words to them are strong. “Do not resume to say to yourselves, [We have Abraham as our father].” Of course, Jesus (and John) don’t omit the responsibility for moral behavior. John gives the Pharisees quite a strong warning in that regard. “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance … every tree that does not bear good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” It’s a question of attitude. Of disposition. It’s a matter of the heart. If anyone would be worthy in this

In today’s Gospel we hear about John the Baptist, preparing the way for the coming Messiah. John called for a conversion from sin with new eyes of faith for the future. Let us dedicate ourselves to be people like John the Baptist, looking forward to our God coming into our lives through our one new parish. We are able to profess our faith today, in the holy triune God, whose love is revealed in Jesus Christ and who has gifted us with the Holy Spirit. They share the gift of faith with us and taught us how to pray. They nurtured the faith in us through the celebration of the sacraments; they brought us to the present moment to look forward with courage. Let us pray that we too will be able to hand on the faith to future generations with effectiveness and joy.
Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception Monday, December 9 (Holy Day, but no obligation) 7:30 AM – St. Elizabeth of Hungary 8:30 AM – St. Clare of Assisi 9:15 AM – St. Elizabeth of Hungary (School Mass) 12 Noon – Holy Spirit 7:00 PM – St. Thomas à Becket
scenario, it’s John the Baptist. Jesus Himself will name him the greatest of prophets and a great man. John, however, recognizes his own lowly place in the grand scheme of things. “The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. I am not worthy to carry His sandals.” The Pharisees take pride in being “better” than others. John embraces humility in Christ being
“better” than Him. We don’t self-generate our own worthiness. We receive it as a gift from God. In a few short weeks, we will celebrate the birth of Christ. Bishop Ven. Fulton Sheen wrote about the Nativity in his “Life of Christ.” “Because [Jesus] was born in a cave, all who wish to see Him must stoop. To stoop is the mark of humility. The proud refuse to stoop and, therefore, they miss divinity.” God invites us to prepare our hearts this Advent. When you consider your own life, where are you looking for your worth? This Christmas, are you prepared to stoop?
On Wednesday, December 11 from 6:00PM to 9:00PM, rediscover the healing power of God's love in the Sacrament of Reconciliation at all Catholic parishes throughout the Diocese of Pittsburgh. If you've been away for a long time, don't worry.

Dear Parishioners, It is an incredibly busy time for most of us as we continue efforts in many different directions early on in this Advent season. Let us remember to slow down enough to reflect on the silence, simplicity and hope of Advent, awaiting the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. The days leading up to our Lord’s birth were certainly filled with uncertainty for Joseph and Mary. During these days of Advent, we can find strength from their example and intercession, as we too, journey in times of uncertainty. We can be assured, that keeping our eyes fixed on the Holy Family and the baby Jesus, will fill us with hope and expectant joy, despite the difficulties and trials along the way. I ask for your continued patience and support, as we continue to work together in building up the Body of Christ and I thank you for journeying with me, Fr. Bill, Fr. Ken and Deacon Gerry this blessed Advent season into the joy of Christmas.
God Bless, Fr. Cain Our Parish Grouping Updates - Becoming One Thank you to everyone who submitted a proposed name for our new
parish. On December 2, Pastoral Council met to review the proposed parish names. A condensed list of 15* names to be submitted to the bishop for pre-approval will be in next week’s bulletin.
Parish services will inform us regarding the names that Bishop Zubik
has pre-approved.
From this list of pre-approved names, we will ask you to give your top 3 recommendations. These three names will then be included with the formal petition (submitted to the bishop by the administrator) for completing the merger process.
At a recent meeting of the Parish Finance Councils of all four of our
current parish communities, the financial annual reports mandated by the diocese were shared to acknowledge that we will soon be one united parish sharing both assets and liabilities. This was very helpful in further examination of what we need to look at in terms of staffing and building use that will fit within a common budget. We plan to include all four of the annual financial reports in the bulletin before the end of the year.
We have begun working on an examination of needs for the staffing of
the new parish by asking current staff members to submit a thorough description of the services they provide along with the status of full, part-time or hourly employment. This will help to identify any possible overlapping responsibilities that may not be needed or affordable as we move forward. Along with the work of the Councils mentioned above, this data will assist us in determining proper job descriptions for the staff of the parish.
Through these and related activities, we hope to continue to develop a clear definition of both our parish vision and mission. *Originally 10 names were going to be submitted to the bishop. However, it has been determined based on the experience of some groupings, that it is preferred to submit 15 names to offer more choices from which the bishop will return his list of pre-approved names.

The Story of the Advent Wreath …
Wreaths were originally part of the folk traditions of
Northern Europe. Wreaths of evergreens were
decorated with candles to symbolize life and light
during the dark months of winter. Legend has it that
St. Boniface first gave the wreath its Christian
meaning in the eighth century and we have been
using these wreaths as part of our Advent
preparation ever since. The circle of the wreath,
which has no beginning or end, symbolizes the
eternity of God. The evergreens signify continuous
life. Each of the four candles represents one of
the Sundays of Advent. The purple candles
represent the prayer, penance, preparation and
good works we are called to do during
Advent. The color purple signifies the
“royalty” of Jesus Christ. The pink
candle is lit on the Third Sunday of
Advent, which is the Sunday of
rejoicing. The light of the candles
reminds us that Jesus comes into the
darkness of our lives to bring
newness, life and hope. We gradually
add more light each Sunday until Christ,
our Light, comes at Christmas.

your forehead, lips and heart, as we do at Mass
before the Gospel reading.
An Advent Service will be held during the Faith Formation closings at all of the
Faith Formation Sites from December 9-11. There will be no classes after this week until the
week of January 5, 2020.
Second Week of Advent: (Purple Candle — Signifies PEACE) Dear Jesus, you entered our world on Christmas as the Prince of Peace. This Advent, as we strive to become the best version of ourselves, fill us with a deep and abiding peace. Help us share that peace with everyone we encounter, especially those who need it most. John the Baptist told the people, “If you have two coats, give one to someone who doesn’t have any. If you have food, share it with someone else.” As we light this candle, we remember that you bring the light of service into our lives. May your Word be always in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. — Amen.

ST. ELIZABETH SCHOOL
Each year, the Preschool and Kindergarten Students reach out to the residents of Atria Assisted Living. On November 13, the students traveled over to visit the residents to spread some Thanksgiving cheer. The Baldwin Police stopped traffic on Route 51 for the children, teachers and parent helpers to cross safely. The children received a warm welcome by Atria’s staff and residents. The children shared some Thanksgiving songs with the residents, who joined along in song. Our students also gave the residents a hand-made Thanksgiving turkey placemat. The residents shared some songs with the children as well! The children were treated to some juice, popcorn and a treat bag! We are very thankful for being able to spend time with our friends at Atria Assisted Living! We are looking forward to our next visit in February.
All are welcome to join us as we pray the Rosary

Service is an important part of being a follower of Jesus Christ. Being a Liturgical Minister is a great way to serve God and the Church. We are in need of adults to volunteer at Mass as Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors and Ushers. Thank you for considering helping in this matter.
For more information, please contact the Parish Office at 412-655-2885.
Also any youth in Grades 4 & up who are interested in the Altar Server Ministry, please contact Sue Weber at the Parish Office: 412-655-2885, or email: [email protected] for more info.
