The Bells of Peace I was reading an article about Remembrance Day (which is celebrated in Canada on November 11th and is much like our Veteran’s Day.) This year Remembrance Day falls on the 100th anniversary since bells rang across Europe marking the end of the First World War – it was the way they had to announce “go home, the war is over.” 670,000 Canadians fought in that war and many of them died. The plan is to commemorate this significant anniversary by the ringing of the bells across Canada as the sun sets. Prior to this year, this day has been recognized throughout Canada with a traditional 2 minutes of silence at 11:00am (The 11th day of the 11th month at the 11th hour.)
Roughly 1400 Legion branches (veteran’s organizations) throughout Canada are working with local schools, community centers and churches to make sure bells are ringing throughout the country. Bells will toll 100 times, with five seconds between each, lasting slightly longer than 8 minutes.
As we celebrate our veterans and the sacrifices they have made, let us remember to continue to pray for peace. If you wish to give public witness to
our desire for peace, Grandmother’s for Peace meet the first Sunday of each month at 3:00pm on the corner of McBean Pkwy and Valencia Blvd. (you don’t have to be a grandmother to join them.) Peace!

News from the Office of Religious Education
QUESTION OF THE WEEK: 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
Children: What is one item you have that means a lot to you? Would you be willing to give it to another person if they needed it?
Parents: Consider whether your giving, especially during the holiday season, is like that of the scribes or like the giving by the poor widow? What can you do to ensure that your giving is truly a sacrifice?
CHRISTMAS PLAY
IS COMING...
Teens needed to create sets and help with crafts. Actors and singers needed
too! If you would like to help us plan the Christmas play for the elementary
religious education classes, then email Mrs. Medina at
Community service hours will be awarded!
Meeting for volunteers: THURSDAY, November 15th at 5pm
in Room 4
SHARING THE
GOSPEL:
God wants us to be
humble, & he wants
us to share our
blessings. So many people Jesus met
were proud, & they thought they
deserved special treatment. Other
people were rich, but they took
what they wanted first and gave
God what was left. The poor widow
in today's Gospel got it right. She
quietly gave to God all she had.
Prayer:
Dear God, help me to quietly give
you the best of all that you have
given me.
GROWING WITH THE GOSPEL My Church, My Family and Me
The Office of Religious Education
recognizes the generosity of Sports Clips on Golden Valley
for donating candy and coupons to the Halloween Parish Party. This donation arrived after our last bulletin
went to print. We are thankful all around!
A SPECIAL PRAYER FOR VETERANS
God of mercy we ask for blessings on all those who have served their country in the armed forces. We ask for healing for the veterans who have been wounded, in body and soul, in conflicts around the globe. We pray especially for the young men and women, who come home with injured bodies and traumatized spirits. Bring solace to them, O Lord. May we pray for them when they cannot pray. Have mercy on all our veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Bring peace to their hearts and peace to the regions they fought in. Bless all the soldiers who served in non combative posts. May their calling to serve continue in their lives in many positive ways. Give us all here present today creative vision to see a world that, growing weary with fighting, moves to affirming the life of every human being and so moves beyond war. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Jesus, I trust in You!
In observance of Veterans Day, the Religious Edu-cation Office is closed tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 12
and NO classes will be in session.

Why Do We Do That?
Catholic Traditions Explained
Question:
What is the Christian attitude towards violent conflicts?
Answer:
In the Beatitudes, Jesus teaches us "Blessed are the peacemakers" and to "love your enemies." All human beings are made in God's image and likeness. We are one human family -- brothers and sisters despite what divides us. Christians have the obligation to prioritize peaceful means to resolve conflicts. War wreaks a toll on a nation. Civilians bear a disproportionate burden of this cost during the war itself and as the nation rebuilds. However, those in authority have the obligation to protect the innocent. During the gradual fall of the Roman Empire, theologians began to theorize that war could be just if it was a defensive measure of last resort. The "Just War Theory" was later expanded by St. Thomas Aquinas, who also included moral obligations during the war itself, including the protection of civilians. Those in public authority have the obligation to carefully examine their mo-tives, agendas, and rationale for violent force. Should a cause be just, those who fight and defend under such cir-cumstances must be valued and honored. They deserve our support both during and after the war.
We are all generous, at least to some degree. Most of us when asked for something -- whether it be our time, our talent, or our treasure -- assess whether we can "afford" to fulfill the request and still preserve our own needs. Have we ever given the last bit of what we had knowing that we will have to do without so that someone else can benefit? We all tend to be a little covetous of our time, talent, and treasure. There are people throughout history who have given every-thing away only to find that they have received much more in return. St. Francis of Assisi is a prime witness. The Scrip-tures today bring us two widows who do the same. Do we see in people such as this examples of foolishness or wisdom, inspiration, and hope?
Live The Liturgy
- INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK -
RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS
What does sacrifice look like? I think of those who serve in the Armed Forces. They have sacrificed much for my freedom and to work towards real peace in our world. I think of those in service to our Church: priests, deacons, and religious. Their lives are dedicated to prayer and good works so that the Good News might not only be preached but be seen in the love they display toward God and their fellow brothers and sisters. I think of parents who stay up long nights with sick children and then one day find themselves staying up even longer as they wait for them to return home. I think of teachers who work hard to educate the next generation of citizens with low salaries and little respect. I can see sacrifice all around me. I think you can see it, too, if you look. However, I also see too many seeking to get ahead at the expense of others. I see those who have so much and only crave for more. I see those caught up in themselves to the point where families fall apart, friendships disappear, and people literally die from a lack of compassion. I see many who have forgotten where all their gifts in this world came from, if they even knew in the first place. I think of all those who sacrifice and see all those who do the opposite. May our eyes see more of those who are generous. May we never focus on those who have forsaken others more than those who have given freely to others. May the witness of true sacrifice show us the way to the Father and to a world full of His love. -Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
***NUN (ن (. The 14th letter of the Arabic
alphabet (the equivalent of letter N in our Roman alphabet), is the first letter word نََصاَرىnaṣārā : Nazarenes, (the way Muslims have called Chris-tians since the beginning of their invasion of the Christian world in the 7th century)-Christians under Muslim rule never called themselves this, since the intent of Muslims was to portray Chris-tians as a contemptible and disobedient sect. It is the same name of the equivalent letter ن in the Hebrew alphabet (also a Semitic language), and it reminds us of the words of Jeremiah, also crying for an exile of his people sent to Mesopotamia: Nun: The yoke of my iniquities hath watched; they are folded together in his hand, and put upon my neck; my strength is weak-ened; the Lord hath delivered me into a hand out of which I am not able to rise. (Lamentations 1) In their genocidal physical elimination of Christians from the Mesopotamian city of Mosul, Muslim terrorists marked each Christian-owned institution and building with this letter, for the extermination of holdouts and expropriation of their belongings. They mean it as a mark of shame, we must then wear it as a mark of hope. Yes, we are in the army of the Resur-rected Nazarene, the Master and Lord of the Universe, the Man who is God Almighty, the Second Person of the Most Holy Trin-ity. You may kill our brethren and expel them, but we Chris-tians will never go away.*** (Text taken from Rodarte Careli: International traditional Catholic Web Log)
