TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The roots of this week’s feast of the Assumption can be traced back at least to
the fifth century, when it is noted in the Armenian lectionary. Celebrated in Jerusalem, the feast in honor of the
Theotokos, the Mother of God, became the principal feast of Mary throughout the
Christian world. The place of celebration was at the tomb of Mary in Gethsemane and
was therefore known as the “Dormition of Mary.” In some cultures this feast is celebrated today with a resting statue of
Mary, much like a wake service of modern times.
The liturgy of this feast provides images of “the place of your rest” in Psalm 132, and reverence for the Ark of the Covenant
that held the signs of the Promise. Like that Ark, Mary is for us the ark of the Savior, the one who bore the Son of God. When the doctrine of the Assumption was defined in 1950 the Gospel
reading for the feast was changed to include the verses of Mary’s song, the Magnificat. The scripture readings for both
the vigil Mass and the Mass of the day speak to us of life after death as well as the path to be followed in order to reach it. The key to this promised immortality if found as we take to
heart the words of the vigil’s Gospel, “Blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.”
WE HAVE RESUMED OUR REGULAR MASS SCHEDULE.
ST. CLARE OF ASSISI: DAILY MASS—8:30AM

THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Clare of Assisi July 16 1194 – August 11, 1253
born Chiara Offreduccio
Saint Clare of Assisi is an Italian saint and one of the first followers of Saint Francis of
Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for
women in the Franciscan tradition, and wrote their Rule of Life, the first set of
monastic guidelines known to have been written by a woman. Following her death,
the order she founded was renamed in her honor as the Order of Saint Clare, commonly referred to today as the
Poor Clares. Her feast day is on August 11th.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, One of the advantages of when two parishes merge is that we automatically gain the protection of a second patron saint. This month on the 11th of August, our parish will celebrate St. Clare of Assisi’s feast day. In these current circumstances, we can say she could be an even more helpful patroness to invoke during this time of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Out of an abundance of caution, I know some of you or your loved ones who may still be sheltering in place at home may feel disheartened or alone during these uncertain times. One saint who can certainly empathize with us and to whom we can all turn during the pandemic is Saint Clare. She herself who was rather sickly for many years of her life also went through something similar during her lifetime. It was when she was also sheltered in place and unable to attend Christmas Midnight Mass due to her illness that she made a great act of hope to Our Lord and said, “Lord God, look at how I have been left alone in this place for You!” At that very moment God granted Saint Clare a vision in which she saw and heard the Mass as if she had been present in the convent chapel. Because of this, Pope Pius XII made Saint Clare the patroness of television, as well. Fortunately many of you can pray along and follow the Mass from home on television or the internet. Do not be disheartened. Know that even though you may feel alone during these times, your parish family is thinking of you and praying for you. May Saint Clare help us, who may be limited by the necessary precautions of these times, to place all our trust and hope in God. May she intercede for us, watch over us and pray for a speedy end to the pandemic.
Saint Clare of Assisi, pray for us.
