From the Pastor’s Corner
EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP I would like to think that most people in the world would help someone
who was suffering if they had the chance. I guess my optimism starts to take a hit when I consider that in some
cases the cost will be higher for that help than in others. To help someone with a meal or transport someone to a
doctor is one thing. To offer oneself completely, all of one's money or time, is quite another.
Of course, there have been famous examples of this type of giving. The recently canonized
St. Teresa of Kolkata comes to mind. But I personally know of others who have given everything for another.
Friends who have adopted an older child, gone to live as missionaries in a far off land, or added on to their house
in order to care for an aging parent are all examples to me of those who answer the call without counting the cost.
I am not concerned with not being able to follow the examples of these stewardship heroes. What
concerns me is becoming too comfortable and not noticing the Lazarus that may be in my midst.
Living a life of Everyday Stewardship means not only answering the call when it is obvious and when
we have the chance to truly do something amazing, but also when it is less obvious and the need not as
easily noticeable. Who doesn't want to help the starving child they see on a late night infomercial? But
the sad reality is that sometimes there are children lying at our proverbial door that fail to gain our
attention.
So, I pray to see with the eyes of Jesus. I ask that I may be ever more mindful of those in need
who cross my path. I pray to see Jesus in them. I pray to be Jesus to them. I pray that I may
answer the call. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © Liturgical Publications Inc
CYCLE C 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time
M y child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while
Lazarus likewise received what was bad.'" Today's Gospel reading is Jesus' parable
about a "rich man," whose name we do not know, and a "poor man," named Lazarus.
The story shows both men after death, the rich man in torment, and Lazarus enjoying the comfort
that he was deprived of during his earthly life.
It's important to understand that this teaching does not imply that having wealth leads to
eternal punishment. Rather, we look at how the rich man USED his wealth and see there the
cause of the problem. As Jesus says, this man "dressed in purple garments and fine linen and
dined sumptuously each day." Clearly, he had abundant wealth and focused it all upon serving
himself. To further the accusation against him, all the while "lying at his door was a poor man ...
who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table." But the
rich man paid Lazarus no heed, and THIS is why he now suffers. Because he would not deign to
"suffer" at all during his life by sharing his linen clothing or feeding his poor neighbor covered
with sores.
This selfishness became the rich man's
SELF-condemnation. He put himself in torment because he
blatantly disobeyed God's law to love his neighbor. This
challenging parable urges us to examine our own behavior
and ask how WE use our wealth--whatever size our bank
account may be. Are we willing to assist our neighbors in
need? Or do we walk by the poor, excusing our own comfort?
Let us heed Christ's warning today that such earthly comforts
are, in the long run, short-lived.

ALL OUR TEENS & FAMILIES
ARE WELCOME!
This year Teen Masses will be held
the 1st Sat. of every month at the

Many RCIA candidates are drawn to the
Church because they have experienced the
warmth and welcome of our parish community.
When you volunteer to provide a light breakfast
snack for RCIA, you continue this wonderful tradition
of hospitality that embodies our parish community.
RCIA meets in the rectory every Sunday from
10am-noon, Sept. 25,2016 until May 1,2017, so as
you can see, we need many volunteers. No need to
fuss–just drop off muffins, coffee cake or something
light in the rectory a few minutes before or after
going to Mass. To welcome & support our
candidates, please call Lisa Dolan at 758-0119

deepen their lives of faith. Come and see what

Today’s Gospel ● Jesus told a story about a selfish
rich man who ignored God and refused to share
with other people. All his money did him no
good when he died. He didn't go to heaven.
He had his whole life to learn about God, and he
could have helped many people with his money.
Instead, he forgot about God. He wasted his
riches and bought a lot of nice things for
himself. Learn from the rich man.
Live for God, not for money. Here is the rich man scornfully looking at the
suffering Lazarus lying at his door.

Gifts from Bethlehem will offer for sale handcrafted
olivewood pieces from the Holy Land. This form of art is
an industry of great importance to the local people of the
Holy Land who rely on it for a livelihood. In recent years,
the crafts trade has suffered hardships due to a sharp fall in
tourism & diminishing numbers of craftsmen who are
leaving their homeland because of difficult conditions.
Stop by and see these beautiful works of art!
Thank you in advance for your vital support of
