Pastor’s Corner Holy Week concludes on EasterSunday,thegreatdayofcelebra8ngthe Lord’s victory over death, the
Church’s greatest feast. In a twist of irony,“Easter” comes from Oesteres, the Druidgoddess of Spring, whowas believed to turnher pet bird into a rabbit to amuse goodchildren by laying colorful eggs for them tofind and enjoy. This gave rise to the Easteregg, adopted by Chris8an missionaries as asymbolofJesus’Resurrec8on,sinceeggshavebeen used to symbolize new life in nearlyeveryculturearoundtheworld.Andisn’tthatexactlywhatwe celebrate in naturewith thecoming of Spring, and what Chris8anscelebrateintheResurrec8onofChrist?
OnbehalfofFr.Sanjai,Fr.PeteSaporito,Deacons Larry Farmer and John Rich, ourPastoral Associate Mary Ann Exler and ourenCreParishStaffIwanttowishyouallaveryhappyandblessedholydayand seasonaswecelebrateOurLord’sconquestofsinanddeath. As He once told His Disciples so now Heremindsus:“Youarewitnessesofthis.”(Luke24:48) Byourwordsanddeeds, wearecalledto show thatwe are, indeed, children ofGod,followersofChrist, andheirsofGod’spromiseof rising to everlasCng life with Him who iscalledKingofKingsandLordofLords.
As we reflect upon and celebrate OurLord’svictorywemustalwaysrememberthatitdid not come without sacrifice. As weobserved during Lent, we too must sacrificesomethingofourselvesifwewouldbecountedamong His people; that we must “die withChristsowemay livewithChrist.” (2Timothy2:11).
This takesonnewmeaning thisyear, aswecelebrateatadistancefromeachother.Wemust sacrifice coming together in order toprotectourselvesandeachother.Aswerejoiceandgivethanksforthegi^ofeternalsalvaCon,let us remember those on the front lines ofcaring for others in this Cme of crisis: our
health careprofessionals, medical researchers, and first responders. May they be protectedfrom harm and always be appreciated andrewarded for their service. Let us keep in ourprayersallwhoaresufferingtheravagesofthispandemic: thosewith COVID-19, their franCcloved ones, and thosewhose livelihoods havebeen decimated by its effects. Let usremember all who have died, and their lovedoneswhohavehadtoenduretheagonyofnotbeing able to bewith them. Let us pray thatthis disease will soon be overcome, and thatthe lessons of this pandemic will never beforgoben.
Let us also keep in our thoughts andprayers the people in our naCon and aroundthe world sCll trying to recover fromdevastaCng disasters; migrants and refugeesfleeing poverty, violence, oppression andpersecuCon; forced laborers and hostages;those babling substance abuse and addicCon;and all the vicCms of injusCce, including theunborn.MayHewhoconqueredsinanddeathbringfreedomandnewlifetotheseandallthesufferingandenslaved.
Sacrifice is difficult; but as this greatfeast reminds us, the rewards are out of thisworld! So,HappyEaster, everyone!MayGodconCnue to bless us in our mission ofproclaiming, living, andspreadingthejoyoftheGospelofHimwhorosefromthedead!
