Stewardship by the Book

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 11/12, 2020

In today’s second reading, Saint Paul gives us reason to hope for a wondrous future beyond our imagination. He preaches

this hope amidst the suffering of the early Christian communi-ties. “Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this

present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us” (Romans 8:18). Good stewards realize that

by remaining faithful to the Gospel with persistence, fervor and endurance, our hope in the promises of Christ Jesus will be

rewarded. Reflect this week on concrete ways you can remain faithful to the Gospel during these challenging times.

Would you pray for a priest each day this week?

Bulletin Article by Seminarian Jason Diebolt Active Participation at Mass

Since we have removed the missalettes and the hymnals from the pews, we might ask the question, how can we fully and actively participate in the Mass? Sacrosanctum Concilium (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) from the Second Vatican Council emphasizes the importance of active participation in the litur-gy. It says, “Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that fully conscious, and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people as ‘a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a re-deemed people’ (1 Pet. 2:9; cf. 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their baptism.” (14)

When we look back at the Latin used in the document for the word “active”, the term is ‘actuosa.’ This is different from the word ‘activa’, which is usually what we think of when we hear the word, “active.” ‘Activa’ describes a physical notion of doing something. ‘Actuosa’ is more of an interior notion by uniting our hearts and minds to the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. This “participatio actuosa” can only be exercised through our Baptism by which we are adopted children of God. The outward, physical actions that we do at Mass should more importantly reflect our internal actions. These internal actions should give us a deeper sense of the mystery which is occurring during the Mass. Our beautiful churches help us to lift our hearts, minds, and souls to God to allow us to focus on the supernatural.

This idea of active participation is not a new concept. In fact, Pope Pius XII mentioned active participation in his encyclical, Mediator Dei (Mediator between God [and men]). In paragraph 199, he states, “the clergy and people become one in mind and heart, and that the Christian people take such an active part in the liturgy that it becomes a truly sacred action of due worship to the eternal Lord in which the priest, and the ordinary faithful are united together.” Each of us is called to be unit-ed with Jesus Christ where we offer our own joys and sufferings at Mass together with the priest. Through this unity, we open ourselves up to the graces that we receive at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, which is the ultimate sign of unity and a bond of love.

Sacrosanctum Concilium says that we are not supposed to be just spectators, but to unite ourselves to the perfect Sacrifice, which is Christ Himself, who is present at every Mass. It is at the Mass where we listen to the Word of God and are nour-ished with Christ’s body, blood, soul, and divinity. It is exactly at this moment where we should give thanks to God where we grow in closer union with Jesus Christ so that we can give everything to Him.

In my own experience, I have found it helpful to prayerfully read over the Scriptures that are assigned each Sunday before Mass. This has helped me to fully engage in the readings when they are read during the Liturgy of the Word. This practice can help us actively participate by taking the Word of God to heart and meditating on the Scriptures. If we allow our hearts to be open, the Word will speak to us during Mass.

During the Liturgy of the Eucharist, bring your own offerings to the altar. This includes our intentions for our family and friends along with our own prayers, works, joys, and sufferings. When the priest says, “Pray, brethren, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father”, this is the time to bring our offering and to make what the priest is saying our own words. Through these internal actions, we will be able to actively participate (“participatio actuosa”) in a deeper way that Pope Pius XII and the Second Vatican Council called for in their own respective documents.

May God bless you, Seminarian Jason Diebolt
