St Patrick’s Day Our next school Mass will be held on Tuesday 17 March. This Mass will honour St Patrick and will be led by our Year Three students. All families are welcome to join us in St Cecilia’s Church at 8:45am.

St Cecilia’s Values Each fortnight at our Monday Assembly we will be learning about values that make St Cecilia’s the great school that it is. At our first assembly we will discuss the value of love and at our next assembly the value focus will be kindness. These values will be discussed in classes and information shared in the newsletters. After each assem-bly, students are encouraged to nominate their peers for St Cecilia’s Values Awards and these will be shared at the next assembly. Our Monday morning assemblies are held in the Undercover Area at 8:30am on the odd numbered weeks of term.

Harmony Day Harmony Day, just one day in the now renamed Harmony Week, is celebrated on March 21 each year, with the first Harmony Day being in 1999. The message of Harmony Day is: Everyone belongs. Harmony Day is a time for all Australians to remember and respect our diverse cultural backgrounds and to share what we have in common. Our cultural diversity – from the oldest continuous culture of our first Australians to the cultures of our newest arrivals from around the world – is one of our greatest strengths and is at the heart of who we are.

Here are some fascinating statistics about our diversity:

Nearly half (49 per cent) of Australians were born overseas or have at least one parent who was

we identify with about 300 ancestries

since 1945, more than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia

85 per cent of Australians agree multiculturalism has been good for Australia

apart from English, the most common languages spoken in Australia are Mandarin, Italian, Arabic, Cantonese, Greek, Vietnamese, Tagalog/Filipino, Spanish, Punjabi and Hindi

more than 70 Indigenous languages are spoken in Australia. These facts are taken from ABS 2016 Census Data.

To recognise Harmony Week at St Cecilia’s, we will be sharing food from the many cultures in our school and wearing orange clothing on Monday 23 March.

For Harmony Day, students will be encouraged to wear orange clothing. Students can go head to toe with their orange or it could be as simple as a pair of orange socks or an orange ribbon; please no coloured hair spray, sin-glet shirts or thongs. Why orange? Orange is the colour chosen to represent Harmony Day. Traditionally, orange signifies social communication and meaningful conversations. It also relates to the freedom of ideas and encour-agement of mutual respect. Alternatively, students may choose to come dressed in traditional dress of their cul-ture.

Finally, our food sharing. Sharing a meal is an important tradition in most cultures and we have a variety of differ-ent cultures within our school, each with their own traditional or favourite dishes. Families are invited to contribute a plate of food to share. It will not need to be a large amount of food as students will be invited to have a sample only, not a full meal. Students will still need to bring their own lunch to eat as normal.

What’s for lunch? How many times have you stared into the fridge seeking inspiration for your child’s lunchbox only to discover that your fridge is of no help. Well now you can stop asking your fridge because we are hoping you will get your an-swer here. If you, or your child, have a great lunchbox recipe or idea, please send them to Mrs Sheen so they can be included in our new and exciting newsletter section, ‘What’s in my lunchbox?’ Each week, we will publish a selection of ideas and recipes that could be included in your child’s lunchbox. I’ve done eating duty and I’ve seen some great lunches so don’t be shy to share! Please email your recipes and other ideas to [email protected] with ‘Lunchbox’ as the subject heading. I’m looking forward to getting some new ideas for my lunchbox!

Year Two News!

Thank you to our wonderful mums and dads who were able to come along to our Parent Information Evening this term. We had a great chat about what’s important in Year Two and it was lovely to catch up with many parents. I hope everyone is having some quality time each day to read together, as this is at the top of our learning list of magical, wonderful, brilliant things!

We have just completed swimming lessons at Gratwick Pool. These went for two weeks and the cool water was welcome relief for our class over some very hot days. Thank you to Mrs Lee, Mrs Wellbeloved, Mrs Sheen and Miss Greatorex for travelling with the class!

One highlight at the pool was when we found a sea eagle’s nest high in the trees beside the pool.

Kai showed Ms G some poolside mindful leg-stretching during morning tea.
