MISSION STATEMENT: As part of the living Body of Christ, Saint Cecilia parish on Bainbridge Island seeks to conform to the will of God through faith, works, teaching and stewardship of God’s creation as guided by the Holy Spirit, by the teachings of Christ, and the Grace of the Father. We celebrate this mission daily in prayer, liturgy, sacraments and life.
Dear Parishioners, (Oops – last week’s first installment on antiphons left off the final portion – so I am redoing the entire article.) Those who participate in the Saturday Vigil Mass may have noticed something different in the music lately. It is the incorporation of the assigned antiphons or chants for the Mass (either at the entrance or Communion). Soloist or choir members have simply chanted the verse in addition to other congregational singing to accompany the entrance or communion. This is reflective of a renewed interest in these texts on the part of Catholic pastoral musicians and liturgists. Those who participate in Masses at St. Cecilia parish without music (weekdays and Sunday 8:00 AM) are already familiar with these texts which are recited by the congregation at those Masses. However a little education about antiphons would be helpful. The idea of assigned prayer and scripture texts for our liturgical celebration has a long history and is rooted in our pre-Christian Hebrew spiritual ancestry. The degree and consistency evolved historically, first regionally and then by the broader rite (language and culture). Our Latin rite liturgical texts reached a final and universal stage of prescription as part of the Catholic Counter Reformation at the time of the Council of Trent. While the Second Vatican Council expanded those texts and provided more options in choices of the common texts (those specific texts that are repeated from day to day), the proper texts (those assigned to a particular day or celebration) remain more consistent. The sacred scriptures read at Sunday Mass are read in every Latin rite church throughout the world. The antiphons or chants are among these proper texts. When the New Order of the Mass was instituted after the Second Vatican Council the broad participation of the entire congregation was indicated for praying and singing. This was an innovation. While instruction indicate the antiphons ought to be sung, the option of using a suitable hymn in place of the antiphons was permitted in music instructions and that has become custom. Yours in Christ,

ADORATION
For I was hungry and you gave me
something to eat, I was thirsty and
you gave me something to drink, I
was a stranger and you invited me in,
I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and
you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to
visit me.' (Matthew 25:34)
Make this Christmas a gift to people in need, and a
prayer to people who have everything. There are
Christmas Cards in the church book shelf for you to
offer a Mass to your relatives and friends. Feel free
use as many as you need. Prayers are the best gift we
can give to our love ones.
PRINCIPAL’S CORNER
A FABULOUS TIME WAS HAD BY ALL AT OUR ANNUAL ST. NICHOLAS FESTIVAL! Our students loved shopping for gifts, talking with St. Nicholas, eating pancakes, riding the bucking bronco, creating art and spending time with family and friends. The tasty baked goods, gift items, delicious pancakes and countless hours of time setting up and running the festival were all generously donated by SCCS PARENTS AND PARISHIONERS. Lois Mahoney and Jeanene Nover-Estes, our event co-chairs, were wonderful leaders throughout the pre-planning, the festival and the clean-up. SCCS father David Shaw led our volunteer kitchen staff which included several Knights of Columbus members. Neil Raymond’s bucking bronco was a big hit with students of all ages. It was so much fun to see the joy on our students’ faces when they arrived at the festival. Conger Hall was transformed into a winter wonderland. You have the opportunity to enjoy the marvelous decorations throughout the month of December during coffee and donuts after mass.
Our students performed their winter music concert at the St. Nick’s Festival. The beautiful voices of our students and the inclusion of a sing-a-long made for a spirit-filled experience. Thank you Mrs. Jennifer Cunningham for again wowing us with your musical leadership.
Celebrating our community is central to our mission. Thank you all for joining us as we celebrated one another along with the spirit of Christmas. In gratitude, Susan Kilbane St. Cecilia Catholic School is a faith-based community which inspires an inquisitive mind and a lifelong commitment to learning and stewardship.
