PASTOR’S CORNER
LOVING THE ENEMY
In last Sunday’s Gospel on the Beatitudes, we were given a roadmap to
heaven. The exhortation to the disciples to embrace spiritual poverty, meekness,
righteousness, peacemaking and the other values of the Kingdom of God is
ultimately a call to holiness. They are certainly attainable with God’s grace.
Adding to the call to a life of beatitudes is the command of Jesus in the Gospel this weekend to
love our enemies. When one is tempted to fall into hatred, the words of Christ, “love your enemies”,
becomes a resounding gong, a strong reminder that to fall into hatred is to embrace the very sin that
has become the root cause of the sufferings of others. In the final analysis, this difficult mandate of
Christian discipleship is a call for us not to fall into the same veins or situations where the very people
that we detest have fallen. And, to love them – that is, to pray for their conversion and well-being – is
the only way to lasting peace, not just externally, but for our inner peace as well. It defies logic or
human reason, yet in the eyes of the faith, we trust that Divine Wisdom will touch our hearts to see the
goodness in every creature.
Hatred can only be countered by love. It is only in love that we can pray for the true conversion
of those whom we are struggling to understand, those who have hurt us and have probably made
havoc in our lives. To love our enemies is to commit ourselves not to become part of the proliferation
of evil, but rather, be instruments of transformation. To love one’s enemies is also to say to the person
who has hurt us – “I refused to be controlled by you by holding on to a grudge and resentments. I
choose to love and forgive you precisely because I want to be freed from you so that when I think of
you I will not be filled with anger and disdain, but rather, find myself praying for your own good and
well-being.” This is the love and grace that God wants to give when we are experiencing enmity, the
same love our Crucified Lord gave from the cross: "Father, forgive them, they do not know what they
are doing" (Luke 23:34). – Fr. Cary

"HELLO SQUAD"
"May the Church be a place of God's mercy
and hope, where all feel welcomed…
And the Church must be with doors wide
open so that all may enter…
And we must go out through these doors
and proclaim the Gospel."
Words of Pope Francis, June 2013
Are we making people feel "welcomed" here at
St. Cecilia, so that they may go out and proclaim the
Gospel? What is one way we can do this? Can you share
15 minutes before Mass on Saturday & Sunday, to show
hospitality and GREET at the doors of the church? Yes,
only 15 minutes! That's only 1 hour in a whole month of
weekends! Meet that family you've seen, but don't know
their name. Have the honor to be the face of St. Cecilia
to new parishioners.
The Letter to the Hebrews reminds us, "do not neglect
hospitality, for through it some have unknowingly
entertained angels" (13.2).

MEN REGRET LOST FATHERHOOD
40 Days for Life will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. We will be outside every day, until Good Friday, at the
Lovejoy Surgicenter. 40% of all Portland area abortions are committed at this facility.
Please know that we also continuously witness weekly outside Planned Parenthood on 1st and Betts Avenue across from
the Beaverton Post Office every Friday at 8:40 until 10 am.
In the last 6 months, "pink hat" ladies intercept almost all of the young women we hope to talk to, but we can still
introduce ourselves in friendly voices. We tell them of the options available such as the "Stand Up Girl" website and other
resources. The website shares testimonies and information about personal health, relationships, contraception,
pregnancy, and baby development and care.
Because of the "pink hat ladies" blocking our access to the women, we were getting
discouraged. However, last Friday, a well-spoken, young man approached Randy. Randy's
sign "Men Regret Lost Fatherhood" had caught his attention. This young man revealed that
he was involved with encouraging many women to abort his babies. Seeing Randy's sign
made him aware of the seriousness of his actions. Randy and Mary Ann talked to him for
a long time. Mary Ann and Marie gave him pamphlets and a St. Cecilia bulletin that listed
the upcoming Project Aurora retreat dates. Randy and Marie continued their long
conversation with him. We were encouraged by him and his willingness to listen!
He seemed grateful for our input. Praise God!
Come join us for a prayer or honk and wave as you pass by!

FEBRERO 24, 2019
propios instintos y nuestras inclinaciones naturales.
no simplemente ignorarlos o tolerarlos.
bien. Es indispensable, si queremos seguir al Señor,
PERDONAR siempre y evitar todo resentimiento.
NUEVO GRUPO JUVENIL: VIERNES, MARZO 1
Pase a
sacramental, adorarlo, alabarlo, y venerarlo, y traerle
nuestras preocupaciones y peticiones. Es un lugar de
respeto y, generalmente, SILENCIO.

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ FEBRUARY 24, 2019
FIRST READING ~ 1 SAMUEL 26:2, 7-9, 12-13, 22-23
In those days, Saul went down to the desert of Ziph with three thousand picked men of Israel, to search
for David in the desert of Ziph. So David and Abishai went among Saul’s soldiers by night and found
Saul lying asleep within the barricade, with his spear thrust into the ground at his head and Abner and his
men sleeping around him.
Abishai whispered to David: “God has delivered your enemy into your grasp this day. Let me nail him
to the ground with one thrust of the spear; I will not need a second thrust!” But David said to Abishai,
“Do not harm him, for who can lay hands on the LORD’s anointed and remain unpunished?” So David
took the spear and the water jug from their place at Saul’s head, and they got away without anyone’s
seeing or knowing or awakening. All remained asleep, because the LORD had put them into a deep
slumber.
Going across to an opposite slope, David stood on a remote hilltop at a great distance from Abner, son of
Ner, and the troops. He said: “Here is the king’s spear. Let an attendant come over to get it. The LORD
will reward each man for his justice and faithfulness. Today, though the LORD delivered you into my
grasp, I would not harm the LORD’s anointed.”
RESPONSORIAL PSALM ~ PSALM 103:1-2, 3-4, 8, 10, 12-13
The Lord is kind and merciful.
SECOND READING ~ 1 CORINTHIANS 15:45-49
Brothers and sisters: It is written, The first man, Adam, became a living being, the last Adam a
life-giving spirit. But the spiritual was not first; rather the natural and then the spiritual. The first man
was from the earth, earthly; the second man, from heaven. As was the earthly one, so also are the earthly,
and as is the heavenly one, so also are the heavenly. Just as we have borne the image of the earthly one,
we shall also bear the image of the heavenly one.
GOSPEL ~ LUKE 6:27-38
Jesus said to his disciples: “To you who hear I say, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,
bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. To the person who strikes you on one cheek,
offer the other one as well, and from the person who takes your cloak, do not withhold even your tunic.
Give to everyone who asks of you, and from the one who takes what is yours do not demand it back. Do
to others as you would have them do to you. For if you love those who love you, what credit is that to
you? Even sinners love those who love them. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what
credit is that to you? Even sinners do the same. If you lend money to those from whom you expect
repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, and get back the same amount. But
rather, love your enemies and do good to them, and lend expecting nothing back; then your reward will
be great and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the
wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
“Stop judging and you will not be judged. Stop condemning and you will not be condemned. Forgive
and you will be forgiven. Give, and gifts will be given to you; a good measure, packed together, shaken
down, and overflowing, will be poured into your lap. For the measure with which you measure will in
return be measured out to you.”

VII DOMINGO ORDINARIO ~ 24 DE FEBRERO 2019
GLORIA
No hará falta repetirlo".
SALMO RESPONSORIAL ~ Del SALMO 102
El Señor es compasivo y misericordioso.
SEGUNDA LECTURA ~ 1 COR 15, 45-49
El primer hombre, hecho de tierra, es terreno; el segundo viene del cielo. Como fue el hombre terreno, así son los hombres terrenos;
No juzguen y no serán juzgados; no condenen y no serán condenados; perdonen y serán perdonados.
medidos''.
ORACIÓN A SAN MIGUEL ARCÁNGEL
AMEN.
