Welcome to St. Catherine's

In the Spirit of Hospital-ity and the Ministry of Welcome, there are NO seats “Reserved” in this Church (except during our Faith Formation Programs). If someone wishes to enter your pew, please slide over so they do not have to stumble over you. Also, we ask that you consider others’ needs before your own desires. Thank you.

WELCOME

ANOINTING OF THE SICK

If you have a serious illness, are facing hospitalization and/or surgery, you should arrange to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, which should be celebrated before a sick person is unconscious, comatose or in the last stages of life. The Anointing is offered on Friday mornings, upon prior request, during the 7:25 AM Mass. If you or family members are unable to attend Mass,

Father will come to your home. Arrangements must be made beforehand for proper preparation. Please call the Parish Office at

A normal Sacrificial Giving Program is a 10% contribution to a charitable organization or church. St. Catherine's is asking for 4%.

Or, consider giving, as a minimum each week, your first hour's salary (or wage) in thanksgiving for the opportunities God has given us to work and produce for ourselves, our families and our communities. Another way to respond to God's generosity is to mention St. Catherine's in your will. Please give prayerful thought to supporting St. Catherine's in this way as well.

Canon Law stipulates that weddings are to take place in the Parish where either the bride, the groom, or their parents reside. In order to begin the Marriage Preparation Process, you must pick up A Guideline and Policy Booklet for Weddings from our Parish Office and read it thoroughly. Please understand that the marriage preparation in the Diocese of San Bernardino takes a minimum of 6 months and that a wedding date may not be set until specified criteria are met.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL BROWN BAG SUNDAY

It’s that time of year again! Today volunteers will be hand-ing out empty grocery bags after all the Masses. You are asked to bring these back next week (Nov 15 & 16) with your donation of non-perishable food items. Suggested items are cereal, dried pasta, pasta sauce, canned soup, canned beans, canned tuna, canned meats, and peanut but-ter. Just think of what you would like to receive if you and your children were hungry. Although we would dearly love to have these bags brought back completely full, all donations, no matter how small, will most gratefully be accepted. Attached to these bags are St Vincent de Paul donation en-velopes. If you do not wish to bring food items to the church please consider making a cash donation. We use these funds to purchase food and provide other assistance. Just drop the envelope in the basket with your normal par-ish offering. We need your help to help restock our food pantry which is currently serving over one hundred families a week. On behalf of the poor of Temecula we would like to thank you in advance for your generous contribution.

World Wide Marriage Encounter “When one finds a worthy wife, her value is far beyond pearls. Her husband, entrusting his heart to her, has an unfailing prize.” Do we value the prize we have in our spouse enough to take time to enjoy it? For infor-mation about upcoming Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekends, please contact Chris and JoAnne Mier (951) 672-3380.

Next month we will begin having

an additional Reconciliation Prayer Service!

The usual service will be on the first Wednesday of the Month at 7:00 PM On December 3rd. Because we will be in the Season of Advent, the second Service will be on Wednesday, December 17, at 7:00 PM. Mark your calendars! Beginning in January, 2015, Reconciliation Prayer Services will be on the first Wednesday at 7:00 PM AND the first Saturday of each month from 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM, unless otherwise specified. In January, the dates are: Saturday, January 3rd and Wednesday, January 7th, 7:00 PM. In February, Wednesday, Feb. 4th, 7:00 PM and Saturday, Feb 7th, 8:00 AM. Because Ash Wednesday is celebrated on February 18th this year, on February 25th we will begin our Traditional Weekly Lenten Services followed by a Soup Supper. Remember, this is our time to fast until the supper, contributing in the collection what you would normally spend on your family’s dinner for that evening which will be given to our SVDP Outreach Ministry. In this way, we enter into the spirit of Lent: Prayer, Penance, Fasting and Almsgiving. May our merciful God shine His kindness and love upon you and your families!

Reflecting on God’s Word Some things drop into our lives and we simply run with them. Summer vacation was like that when I was a child. There was no need and certainly no desire to organize it for the sake of efficiency. Summer was better when it just happened: bike riding and pick-up softball on the school playground behind our house and swimming at Lakeside Park and going for ice cream at dusk and catching fireflies at night and a thousand other things that come together and make up summer. There are other things, however, that drop into our lives but never go anywhere, except perhaps with a lot of prodding. School comes to mind. I never would have gone had I been given a menu of options. Having my tonsils out was another such thing, and wearing braces on my teeth, and moving into a new city when I was eight, and my grandmother dying on my twelfth birthday. I took them in stride, mostly because there was no other way to take them. Given my druthers, though, they never would have happened at all. I simply lived with them, and then they were over. The Gospel this week proposes that God comes in much the same way. God gives us five talents’ worth of life or two talents’ worth or even one talent’s worth, and with it enough energy to double it. Sometimes, though, God drops in when we’d rather be left alone, and so we try to bury God just because the situation doesn’t look very life-giving to us. Yet it can be life-giving, like the weary routine of raising children or going to the same job we’ve been going to for the past twenty-five years or taking care of an aging parent. Eventually we may find out that burying such life is more deadly than the risk of living it, and living it brings a higher yield than we could ever expect. —Rev. Joseph J. Juknialis

2015 CHANGE !!! K-5

In order to keep up with our Safe Environment Policy we MUST Implement A Sign In Policy. When you bring your child to the classroom or to the social hall for Faith Formation you MUST sign them in each and every week. If you attend a mass other than the one you signed up for there are no changes, We have a sign out at the church doors policy in place. PARENT/GUARDIAN must sign students in and out. Older siblings are not allowed to do this. 2015/16 Catechetical Year The staff, catechists, and I are working on a BIG Change to the times we meet for K-5 faith formation. I value your suggestions and ask that you email me your ideas. We all want the children to attend a whole Mass not coming in during the Mass. We all like the convenience of Sunday Faith Formation. We also like the idea of Saturday morning Formation. We have opened up Monday nights 6:pm to 7:30 pm to 4th and 5thgraders who have received First Holy Eucharist and wonder if you would like us to open to Monday nights to 1st- 8th grade. Please send me your thoughts.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 16, 2014

Blessed are you who fear the L . — Psalm 128:1a

All Chris ans in both East and West embraced the care of the sick as essen al to church life. In the West, the importance of the visit of the priest is stressed, while in the East, the sick person is brought to the church for a full Liturgy of the Word. Some, such as the Armenians, even call it the “Ritual of the Lamp,” since the oil is poured out of the lamp by which the Word is read. This may be why Eastern Chris ans some mes anoint the sick with this oil, since the trip to church might kill them. Our tradi on in the West also unfolded in monasteries, where it was possible for infirm monks to be a ended with a full and beau fully consoling liturgy. In 950 the monks of St. Alban’s Abbey in Mainz produced a ceremonial book that was instantly a pastoral hit everywhere. There were two lengthy rituals for the sick, one an extended vigil, and the other a liturgy of anoin ng that included Communion under both species. While this ritual was a house formula for monks, it is easy to see how monks who had the care of parishes desired to serve their parishioners in a similar way. The first form included the chan ng of peniten al psalms.

We lose so many opportunities in life, because we are good at inventing excuses. Don't invent excuses, accept God's invitation! ~Bishop Barnes
