My Dear People of SCA, We have been blessed with Fr. Nick for 5 years. He has touched the lives of many people during this time. The Archdiocese has a policy that a newly ordained associate should not stay in a parish for more than 5 years. Why? The Archdiocese believes it is important for them to have another parish experience to better prepare them for the assignment as a pastor. I was ordained a priest in 1978. Five years later, I was asked to take a position at Quigley Seminary South. These days, because of decrease in vocations, associate priests are being selected to be pastors with fewer years of experience than would have been the case in my day. My class ordained 29 priests. This year, the Archdiocese will be ordaining 7 priests. This sad small number means that all of us need to not only pray for vocations, but to also encourage vocations to the priesthood in our families. This understanding doesn’t make it any easier for Fr. Nick to move on from St. Catherine’s. Over his five years of ministry, he has been reached out to our parishioners in so many different ways and this has become his home. Fr. Nick and I have also shared ministry in many ways. Fr. Nick has made it a priority to visit the patients in hospitals and visit those ill in their homes. A priest needs to minister to our sick, many of whom who have given so much to their parish. Because of my responsibilities as Pastor and Dean of the surrounding parishes, sometimes my visitation time is limited. A sick call comes into the rectory, and Fr. Nick readily says that he will do the visit. Fr. Nick has made sure that our sick and dying parishioners are ministered to and receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick and Viaticum Communion. Fr. Nick has also been very involved with our school children. Our 7th and 8th Grade Confirmation Candidates are asked to write at least a 5 sentence paragraph based on the Sunday Readings and Homily. The reflection should be not only be a summary of the Readings or Homily, but also a reflection on how it applies to their life as Christian adolescents. Fr. Nick takes the time to read theses reflections and comment on them. Fr. Nick has been a great cheerleader for all of our team sports. He has been there in the stands, on the field cheering on our student athletes, and talking with parents in the bleachers. He has helped cheer on our athletes to several Golden Ball Championships. Pope Francis has given the image that a priest, as a shepherd, should smell like his sheep. In some ways, this means a priest is not to lord over his people, but to be one with his people. Fr. Nick has been one with his sheep at our parish. He makes sure our flowers and garden are watered. He helps with the Christmas and Easter set up and he also helps with the Fall and Spring cleanup of our church grounds. So what is the associate transfer process? Fr. Nick has been asked to submit 3 parishes he might like to be an associate at. Pastors, like myself, have submitted 3 associates who might be a good fit for St. Catherine Parish. Fr. Nick has interviewed at several parishes. I have also interviewed associates who might be a good fit for our parish, which includes those who asked to be interviewed as well as those who I invited to interview. New assignments will be effective July 15th, so we wait.—Fr. Zi

In this series of reflections, I have been considering the many graces I’ve enjoyed here at St. Catherine’s. Today I wanted to touch on a few moments I will cherish. A few years back Pope Francis declared a Year of Mercy. Our parish signed up to be a mercy site. We erected a Holy Door which offered a Plenary Indulgence to walk through it, go to Confession, and receive the Eucharist. Among other activities that year we hosted 24 hours of Reconciliation with the help of many priests in the local area. We estimated over 500 people attended this special day. I sat in the confessional for about 8 hours. I remember being so sleepy but the grace of God picked me up. Other priests reported the same thing. None of this would have been possible to host such a welcoming environment without the help of many of our volunteers who welcomed people and provided refreshments. Another special event was the night we hosted “Broken Mary.” Local media veteran Kevin Matthews shared his journey to an active faith life after encountering Mary during a mystical experience. He told the story about how he repaired the statue and now travels with her to inspire others to develop a relationship with Mary. When our team started planning this event, we had no idea what to expect. We did our best to get the word out. I would argue it was the most well attended event in my time here. It was an electric evening where nearly every seat available was taken. I was most impressed with the dozens of volunteers who came out to help and welcome guests. I was so proud of how our people came together to make this faith filled night one to remember. I am an alumnus of Mundelein Seminary at the University of St. Mary of the Lake. I loved my experience there, learning to be a priest, receiving instruction in Theology and Pastoral Ministry. So, I was committed to taking our seventh graders there each year for a vocational field trip. I also took the 55+ Club there to visit and take a tour. It is truly a gem of the Archdiocese of Chicago and I am grateful to God for the opportunity to study and pray there. I hoped my enthusiasm and admiration for their mission came through as I led these tours for our people. At the end of the summer we would have our St. Catherine’s 5k Race. It was always good to see everyone out there for this nice community event through our neighborhood. It was emblematic of our community’s efforts to support good health and family activity. I was in charge of leading the pack as the pace bike. It was all I could do to stay ahead of the ringers and not lead the people astray trying to stay on course while going full speed. I always sought to be present often riding my bike around our neighborhood stopping to talk with people or walking the green strip praying the Rosary. We are fortunate to have landed here in this parish. It is such a good place to live and raise a family with the parish as the heart of the neighborhood. That heart will remain strong as long as the people continue to return to the source of grace which flows from the Tabernacle. I have been encouraged by the kind words and notes I’ve received from the parishioners of St. Catherine’s. To all of you who have had me over for dinner, I thank you for the time to know you better. Please extend that kindness to whichever priest arrives here next. I want to thank the dynamic Catholics who give so much time and energy to support this parish in a myriad of ways; it has been a pleasure to be your coworker. To the teachers, staff, and Fr. Dennis I am eminently grateful for your tireless effort working together for the stewardship of this place we love. I hope to return from time to time especially for some of the events that were postponed because of Covid-19. Let me close by thanking God for calling me to be a priest and sending me to St. Catherine’s.—Fr. Nick
