QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Of all the words I speak, text and read daily, how many

give life?

SPONSOR OF THE WEEK

Jesus said to him in reply, “What do you want me to do for

you?” The blind man replied to him, “Master, I want to see.”

Jesus told him, “Go your way; your faith has saved you.”

Immediately he received his sight and followed him on the way.

Mark 10:51-52

The healing and gifts we share with others are based on the healing and gifts we have first received from God. Our generosity is a response to God's generosity.

CELEBRATE RESPECT LIFE MONTH

A PERFECT GIFT

Soon after the birth of my son Charlie,* who has Down Syndrome, a visitor asked whether he was “mild, moderate, or severe” - referring to his level of cognitive impairment. I was shocked. In my arms I held my beautiful baby boy, who

defied easy categorization.

It’s like looking at stained glass from the outside: the colors look dark and you can’t see the figures. But inside, with the sun

shining through, the effect can be brilliant.

From inside our family, love illuminates our life with Charlie. What may seem dreary to others, perhaps even unbearable, is actually filled with beauty and color. Our love has nothing to do with his abilities. We love him simply because of who he is, and understanding this teaches us a fundamental truth: every life is a

good and perfect gift.

Respect Life Program article by the same name and is reprinted

GIVING OPPORTUNITY

We are creating a new giving opportunity to meet an important student need. Last year, it cost us $12,085 to feed the school children who qualified for free lunches. This year we are anticipating the cost to be close to the same amount, if not slightly more. We would like to ask your help in covering this

cost for the current school year.

The cost of school lunch for one child is $70 per month. If you would like to make a donation of any amount, there are a number of ways to do this. Give cash, or make your check out to St. Bernard with the notation “School Lunch Program Donation” on the memo line. You may also give online by going to our website and clicking on Online Giving, then School

Lunch Program.

St. Bernard is an extremely generous community in so many ways and this is another way to share your blessings and help us to keep the school costs as low as possible. Your gift helps kids feel better and succeed as students. If you have any questions, do

not hesitate to contact Father Bob or business manager Jim Parr.

LECTOR TRAINING

Interested in becoming a lector at weekend Masses? Denise Meyer, Pastoral Associate, is offering a training session on Monday night, November 12, 7:00 p.m. in church. Please call the Parish Office,

Our Parish Target - $63,400

THIS COMING WEEK

UNLOCKING THE MYSTERY OF THE BIBLE

This coming Monday (October 29), the afternoon group

will meet from noon – 1:00 p.m. in the All Saints Room. We

will be finishing up the “Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible

Series” with a look at the “Messianic Fulfillment – Part 2” and

“The Church” (Bible Narrative books Luke 22-24; Acts)

periods. The time of Messianic Fulfillment is when God, at

last, sent his only Son, Jesus, the Messiah, to fulfill his

promises. In our final story, the Church carries on God’s work

in the world. .

The Evening group will meet from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Checkerboard Room. We will be looking at “Maccabean Revolt” and “Messianic Fulfillment – Part 1” periods (Bible Narrative books 1 Maccabees; Luke 1-21) Years later in the story, the Maccabees stood up against the threats of Hellenization in the Maccabean Revolt. Then, we move to look at the first New Testament period, the time of Messianic Fulfillment, when God, at last, sent his only Son, Jesus, the

Messiah, to fulfill his promises.

It’s never too late to join us to get the full story of how these events are part of your story. Noon-1:00 p.m. in the All Saints Room or from 7:00-8:00 p.m. in the Checkerboard

Room.

DAVID THE KING

BIBLE STUDY REPRISED

Starting on Monday, November 5 our afternoon study will be a reprise one or our earlier Bible studies from Bishop Robert Barron called “David the King.” The group will continue to

meet from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the All Saints Room. If you missed it the first time, or if you would like to see it again, join us for this six-part study about David who was a man after God’s own Heart. Experience how the whole New Testament opens up once we see it through the person of David. Unlike Adam, the first and failed king, King David orders his kingdom according to the mind and purposes of God. But being imperfect, David stumbles. Yet God does not abandon his people. He promises to send a “son of David” to be the perfect king, whose reign will never end. We will meet on Mondays, Nov. 5, 12, 19, 26, Dec. 3 and 10. Join us as you are able, no

RSVP is required.

Need a chance to reconnect with your faith, or grow in your relationship with God or your faith community? Here is an incredible opportunity to do that and much more! We are hosting our 17th Koinonia retreat weekend November 9-11, 2018. Koinonia is a Greek word meaning “community” or “fellowship, communion, participation.” The retreat begins at 5:00 PM Friday and concludes late Sunday afternoon with the participants going home each evening. The cost is $40 per person and includes meals, a t-shirt, and other materials. Some scholarships are available for those with financial needs. It is open to Catholics and non-Catholics, age 21 and over. Applications are available in church. If you have any questions about the retreat, please feel free to contact Maria Miles, Lay Director at (502)594-3223; [email protected], or Jennifer Britton, Assistant Lay Director at (502)551-7569; [email protected] . We are both happy to answer your questions. We hope you'll join us this year!

LITURGY FORMATION PROGRAM

The Liturgy Formation Program offers the opportunity for participants to gain a deeper understanding of the rituals we celebrate and a greater knowledge of liturgical ministry. Through twelve classes—which provide a basic understanding of liturgy, the liturgical year, liturgical ministry, liturgical music, and the celebration of the Mass—the Liturgy Formation Program aims to assist in promoting the fruitful celebration of the liturgy throughout the archdiocese. The first module of six classes will be offered in the Winter of 2019 and the second module of six

classes will be offered in the Fall of 2019.

Liturgy Formation is open to all parishioners but would be especially beneficial for Worship and Music Directors, Worship Committees, Liturgy Preparation Teams, Musicians, Deacons,

and Sacristans.

A choice of afternoon or evening sessions is available. Online info and registration will be available at: https://www.archlou.org/services-directory/archdiocesan-agencies-

facilities/worship-office/.

PARENTING POINTERS

When families work well, jobs are shared according to age, ability, and interest. Just for fun, why not shake it up once in

awhile. Try trading jobs. You just might learn something new.
