Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time October 23, 2016

The prayer of the lowly pierces the clouds; it does not rest until it reaches its goal, nor will it withdraw till the Most High responds. — Sirach 35:17‑18a

NO COMPARISONS How many times have we read or heard about some-one who’s gotten into trouble—maybe even fired from a job—because of a brush with the law? While our “Christian” minds tell us to be sorry and even pray for the person, a little voice inside our heads may also be saying, “I’m glad I would never do anything like that.” And perhaps we wouldn’t. But are there some things we do that are still not pleasing in God’s eyes? Today’s readings caution us not to look so intently at someone else’s wrongdoing that we overlook our own weaknesses and shortcomings. When we measure ourselves against the worst people we can think of, we come out looking pretty good. There is a danger, however, in using some-one else’s behavior as a way of reflecting our own good-ness. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Imagine the frustration of bishops who work strenu-ously over their ad limina reports, directing study commit-tees, assembling data, honing the texts, traveling to Rome “to the threshold,” only to have it all collapse into a fifteen-minute group meeting with the pope. More than a fewhave grumbled at the weight of this “treasure” from ourtradition, yet from the pope’s vantage point, they are es-sential to his ministry.

Pope John Paul II recalled his own experience as the Bishop of Kraków, visiting with Pope Paul VI in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The memory of those individual visits caused him to strengthen the format, assuring each of the world’s 2,744 bishops a privileged fifteen private minutes with the pope every five years. If you wonder what the pope does all day, the thought of dealing with five hundred bishops a year and reading their detailed re-ports on diocesan life should help fill up the calendar. Pope John Paul II used to say that he approached each individual meeting with the personal goal of learning something new about the Church, and his lively interest made the visits immensely worthwhile. The content of the private meetings remains under a privilege of secrecy, or as Cardinal Theodore McCarrick once said, “You’re only supposed to quote the pope if he tells a joke.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — The L is a God of justice who hears the cry of the oppressed, the orphan, the widow, the lowly (Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18). Psalm — The Lord hears the cry of the poor (Psalm 34). Second Reading — The crown of righteousness awaits me (2 Timo-thy 4:6-8, 16-18). Gospel — The tax collector stood at a distance, beat his breast, and prayed, “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner” (Luke 18:9-14). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Eph 4:32 — 5:8; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Lk 13:10-17 Tuesday: Eph 5:21-33 or 5:2a, 25-33; Ps 128:1-5;

Lk 13:18-21 Wednesday: Eph 6:1-9; Ps 145:10-14; Lk 13:22-30 Thursday: Eph 6:10-20; Ps 144:1b, 2, 9-10; Lk 13:31-35 Friday: Eph 2:19-22; Ps 19:2-5; Lk 6:12-16 Saturday: Phil 1:18b-26; Ps 42:2, 3, 5cdef;

Lk 14:1, 7-11 Sunday: Wis 11:22 — 12:2; Ps 145:1-2, 8-11, 13-14;

2 Thes 1:11 — 2:2; Lk 19:1-10 Did you know? One of the first possible references to reserving the Blessed Sacrament for adoration is found in the life of St. Basil (died AD 379). St. Basil is said to have divided the Eucharistic bread into three parts when he celebrated the Divine Liturgy in the monastery. One part he consumed, the second part he gave to the monks, and the third he placed in a golden dove-shaped container suspended over the altar. "Eternal Son of the living God, Whom I here acknowledge really present! I adore Thee with all the powers of my soul. Prostrate with the Angels in the most profound rever-ence, I love Thee, O my Saviour, Whom I now behold on the throne of Thy love! O dread Majesty, O infinite Mercy! Save me, forgive me! Grant that I may never more be separated from Thee." St. Basil the Great Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament occurs every 1st Thurs-day and all Fridays from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm in the Mary chap-el. Come, spend time with Jesus.

Who Are the Knights of Columbus? All the good works we do are informed by our four core princi-ples: Charity  – Our Catholic faith teaches us to “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Members of the Knights of Columbus show love for their neighbors by conducting food drives and donating the food to local soup kitchens and food pantries, by volunteering at Spe-cial Olympics, and by supporting, both spiritually and materially, mothers who choose life for their babies. Knights recognize that our mission, and our faith in God, compels us to action. There is no better way to experience love and compassion than by helping those in need, a call we answer every day. - Need more infor-mation? Email us: [email protected]

Divine Mercy Chalice and Ciborium (DMCC) Update: To this date we have generated $2,942.00 towards our 75th Anniversary Chalice and Ciborium. We still need a little amount of money to pay off the cost. For those who were out of town or were not able to donate when we collected our individual $1.00 donation, there is still time to give your share in appreciation of this gift to our par-ish. Thank you again for your continued generosity. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank members of our 75th Anniversary planning committee for a job well done. We are all grateful. Thank you.

HAVEN There are places and moments in which one is so completely alone that one sees the world entire.
