Active in the protec-tion of the island’sheritage, the local

UNESCO club—underpresident Daniel Blan-chard—has a new project:the building of an exactreplica of a traditionalpirogue Saint Barth usingtraditional techniques.Used since the arrival ofthe first settlers in SaintBarth, these traditionalboats went out of useabout 30 years ago, replaced by boats from LesSaintes, and are menacedwith a total disappearancefrom the island’s heritage.By building an exact repli-ca, the UNESCO clubhopes to give a new life tothe pirogue. Their 18 ftboat, cut from the trunk ofa gommier tres in Domini-ca, is already under con-struction. It arrived inSaint Barth on April 16,and is housed in the formerBernie woodshop locatedacross from the infirmary. There are still several steps

before the bare hullbecomes a Saint Barthpirogue, and the work hasbeen given to a team ofvolunteer woodworkersincluding Etienne Bernier, the son of Octave who wasthe largest naval carpenterthe island has ever known,Jules Brin, a municipalwoodworker who loves theart of shipbuilding, andJimmy Questel, who hadboatbuilding and renova-tion of old boats training inNewport, and finallyPhilippe, a woodworkerfrom France. They arebeing advised by a groupof old-timers who onceused traditional pirogues. Once completed, thepirogue will be on display, but also put into the waterfor special occasions suchas the arrival of the TransatAg2r, local regattas, andneighborhood festivals…Stay tuned for additionalinformation about the con-strucion process in a futureedition.

Twelve men and two womenoriginally from the Kalinagoterritory—the Caraibe Indian

reservation in Dominica— leftAntigua on May 6 aboard aCaribbean-style pirogue christened“Gli Gli” (the name of a totem forbravery representing an eagle) totravel along the islands of the Antillesarchipelago. They will stop in Nevis,Saint Kitts, Saint Barth (from May13-15), Saint Martin, and Anguilla, before crossing the Anegada passageto conclude their journey in theBritish Virgin Islands. They are cele-brating the 10th anniversary of “GliGli,” a traditional pirogue cravedfrom the trunk of a gommier tree. Tenyears ago, for its inaugural voyage,“Gli Gli” made a historic tripbetween Dominica and Guyana, in asymbolic gesture to reunite theCaraibe Indians from Dominica withtheir ancesters from the SouthernCaribbean and Guyana. The BBCcovered the event with the film, “TheQuest of the Carib Canoe.” For its second journey, “Gli Gli” willbe officially welcomed at each stop.

Saint Barth was not initially on theitinerary, but Daniel Blanchard, presi-dent of the local UNESCO club, heard of the project and spoke to theorganizers who agreed to come to theisland. The pirogue will be anchorednear the Wall House and accompa-nied by Fiddlers Green,” a 90’schooner. At each stop, the group willgive a lecture about the Amerindianculture, play traditional music, pres-

ent demonstrations of Caraibe artisantechniques, and hold a screening ofthe DVD of “The Quest of the CaribCanoe,” and sell products from theCaraibe reservation, as well as pro-vide information about the survival ofthe Amerindian culture in theCaribbean, which is not limited, con-trary to popular opinion, to theCaraibe reservation in Dominica.

The Gli Gli Stops In Saint-Barth

The Rara Avis—atri-mast schooner126 ft long and

26 ft wide— and the BelEspoir, a 124’ sailboatwith a steel hull andthree masts inspired bythe barges of theThames River, botharrived in Saint Barthlast Saturday. The twoold ships are the proper-ty of an associationcalled “The Friends ofThursday Sunday,” cre-ated in 1954 by Father Jaouen. They set sail onMonday in the directionof Saint Martin, then Virgin Gorda where theyshould arrive on May 14.Since the month of Febrau-ry, the two ships have beenoffering short cruises in the

Caribbean. On May 16,they will launch a transat-lantic voyage that will takethem from Santo Domingoto Brest: Bel Espoir isexpected to arrive by theend of July; the Rara Avis

by August 12. They willsail by way of New York,Halifax, Madeleine Island,Saint-Pierre & Miquelon, and the Azores. Father Jaouen joined thecrew of the Rara Avis and

was aboard when the boatanchored in Saint Barth.A Jesuit from Brittany, heis 85 years old and spentthe 1970s working to curedrug addicts around theworld. His experimentfailed as a community ofaddicts was not the solu-tion to cure their problem.Since then, this old salthas set his cap in a newdirection: drug addicts arewelcome aboard buttourists are welcome too.And everyone pays, since“if the druggies want toimprove and thtey can

pay for their drugs they canpay for their voyage.” OnSaturday, the ships andtheir crew returned to SaintBarth for the first timesince 1971.
