FYI
From Fr. Powers
This weekend, 27 children from our parish receive their First Holy Communion. We give praise and thanks to God for the gift of the Eucharist and for the children who will receive our Eucharistic Lord.
The children practiced receiving Holy Communion at rehearsals over the past few weeks. At this time of year, it’s helpful to remind everyone about the need for intentional reverence during reception of the Body and Blood of Christ.
Catholics in the United States have the choice to receive the Body of Christ on either the tongue or by having the host placed on the palm of one hand. The other hand is used to actually take and consume the host before you return to your seat. When holding a child or infant, please receive the Body of Christ by mouth. This avoids the risk of missing the target when “popping” the host into the mouth from the palm of one hand. When receiving the Body of Christ, make sure that you do not have any other items such as a mint or chewing gum in your mouth.
With a new group of children regularly receiving Holy Communion at Mass, parents need to continue to coach and/or supervise their youngsters and little ones so as not to confuse extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Children who have not received First Holy Communion should not present themselves in line for the Eucharist. Bring them with you but don’t let them stand alone. We rely on parents to assist extraordinary ministers of Holy Com-munion in correctly identifying who receives within your family. I also suggest that parents take a quick peak at the hands of their younger communicants for cleanliness prior to Mass. While hands are usually immaculate on First Communion day, at other times they are not. When the hands are too grimy, I ask the child to receive by mouth.
It’s helpful to review practices that foster Eucharistic reverence in our family of faith.
God bless you and have a good and holy week!
