Parish Mission Statement

St. Barbara Parish carries on the faith tradition estab-lished in 1894 by our Slovenian and German ancestors. Like our founders, we are called by Baptism to live as ex-amples of Catholic faith and values, and as witnesses of Christ in the world. Our parish is small in size but great in heart. We are a diverse community who together seek to strengthen faith through liturgy and education, and through service to community in charity. We strive to love God with all our hearts and minds.

Pray for the Sick

Pray for the sick of our parish, our family and friends, especially Charles Barnett, Ted Long, Andrea Littlejohn, Elizabeth McKeever, Elaine Fields, Joan Crum, Karen Recrosio, Gloria Fortunato, Edna Koczaja, John Pulford, Mary Rosato, Ann Mary Mazzocco, Kathy D’Amico, Sophie Kramzer, and those in nursing homes and their caregivers; the return of inactive members of our parish to the practice of their faith; the respect of all human life and the end of abortions. We pray for the safety of our troops, their safe return and for their families at home. Call the rectory office if you are homebound or in a nursing home and would like to receive Communion or if you are a patient in a hospital and would like a visit from a priest, please call 412.221.5152.

WEEKLY MIRACLE This week marks the beginning of a kind of “liturgical detour.” We have been listening to Saint Mark’s Gospel during this liturgical year (Year B). To-day we begin to hear a long section from John’s Gos-pel, starting with the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fishes. This miracle story is a prelude to the Lord’s statements that we will begin hearing in a few weeks, in which Jesus refers to himself as the “bread of life.” Each week we witness a miracle at Mass. We do not see a multiplication of loaves before us. What our eyes of faith allow us to see is the mira-cle of the transformation of common elements—bread and wine—into the Lord’s Body and Blood. Once we have received the Lord, the multiplication begins, for in the Eucharist we are strengthened to multiply our efforts to feed the poor, shelter the homeless, and bring comfort to the despairing. TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When they had eaten, there was some left over, as the Lord had said (2 Kings 4:42-44). Psalm — The hand of the Lord feeds us; he answers all our needs (Psalm 145). Second Reading — Strive to preserve the unity of the spirit through the bond of peace (Ephesians 4:1-6). Gospel — Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed them to those who were reclining, and also as much of the fish as they wanted (John 6:1-15). Preserve the Unity of the Spirit through the Bond of Peace – Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, from which the second reading at Mass this weekend is taken, emphasizes the unity of the Church. It is not written solely to the Christian community in Ephesus, but to the worldwide Church united to Jesus Christ her head and shepherd. Yet this focus on unity is not out of concern for the Church herself, but instead as the means for making God’s plan of salvation known throughout the world. Some ask how the changes the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is bringing about can lead to growth and strength for the Church of Pittsburgh. The answer is that we are being invited to work hard and pray even harder to be united in faith as we come together to form new parish communities. There will be challenges ahead, but let us listen to the wisdom of Saint Paul as we “bear with one another through love” and focus our hearts on what unites us in faith: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Visit onmission-churchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Please join the RCIA Coordinator, John Paul Gaston, for Crash Course Catholicism to learn more about your Catholic Faith! He will be hosting it every Monday of July at 7:00PM in St. Barbara Parish Hall. The course will cover everything from the Creed to liturgy to current is-sues in the Catholic Church. So stop on by to be en-riched in your Faith!
