Pastor’s Corner

Due to recent serious health issues with my mom, I was unable to attend four important Masses that I dearly wanted to Celebrate this last weekend. The first was the opening Mass for the Men’s Society, the second was a memorial Mass for the Garifuna lost at sea in Guatemala. The third and fourth were the Sunday celebrations of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and of course the celebration of Altagracia in the Cathedral with our Dominican parishioners. While my thoughts and prayers were with all the groups concerned, my place was by the side of my mom who at the time was given an hour to live. She has since physically recovered from aspiration, pneumonia, and septic poisoning. Thank God, she is now resting much more comfortably, thanks to, among many things, your prayers.

While I will have another opportunity to speak and in some cases, make up for my absence last

weekend, I would like to share at least one thought concerning Dr. King. There are many things that I admire about him, but perhaps one trait that stands out for me. It was his ability to keep his “eyes on the prize”. He, like John the Baptist, was like one crying out in the wilderness. His very vocation was to expose, protest, and eradicate racism. He was born to fight the sin of hatred and to struggle for a world in which a person would not be judged by the color of their skin, but in the content of their character. There is no doubt, that as a Christian minister, this ultimate prize was Heaven. But he was not content to passively wait for his eternal reward. He knew that as Christians, we must build a just and peaceful existence here on earth. He knew that we have an obligation to build a world that mirrors Heaven.

Last Sunday, we saw in the Gospel of the Day, the “Call of Peter”. Though he was a flawed

fisherman from Galilee, Jesus called him by name to be a “Fisher of Men” and ultimately our first Vicar of Christ. Legend tells us that at the end of his earthly life, Peter following the counsel of others, as he tried to flee Rome during the heavy Christian Persecutions of the Emperor Nero. Escaping to the south using the Appian Way, Peter encountered the Lord Jesus, who was walking in the opposite direction toward the Eternal City. Peter asked Jesus, “Domine Quo Vadis?” (“Lord, where are you going?”) Jesus responded by saying that he was returning to Rome to be again crucified. Peter felt ashamed for having abandoned his flock. He then decided to return. This decision ultimately led to his own crucifixion.

I can barely imagine how those last days were for St. Peter, Dr. King, or any martyr for that

matter. Dr. King, like our first Pope, knew that if he continued bearing witness to Truth and Light, he was going to be killed. Dr. King, was counseled to cool it. I’m sure some of his closest confidants and family told him to stop. After all, Dr. King was arrested 29 times. He subjected himself to brutality, malice and all sorts of abuse. Hadn’t he done enough? I mean, what more could one man do? He used his vocation, his position, his pulpit, his talents and his eloquence. He gave comfort to untold amounts of people. He gave hope where there was none.

Ultimately, he did not listen to those who counseled him otherwise. He did not listen to the self-

doubt or to the temptations of the evil one to speak another “truth”. Despite it all, he kept his “eyes on the prize”, he put his “hand to the plow”, and he never looked back. Like St. Peter, at some point he too must have had an encounter with the Lord. He may have asked Jesus: Lord, where are you going? Jesus might as well have responded, I am going to be with my people. I am going be jailed, I am going to be sprayed by the water cannon, I am going to experience the bite of the canine, the blow of the “billy stick” and the “blackjack”. I am going to walk with those who are segregated, hated, and despised. I am going to be spat at and reviled and ultimately, I am going to be lynched on a tree. At some point, known only to God and Martin, Dr. King said, “I will follow you, no matter what the cost”. It is this yes, this refusal to abandon his flock, his response to the singular Grace to keep his “eyes on the prize”, that I admire most. I pray that one day, I will have even a fraction of the courage and faith of this great man. Dr. Martin Luther King, rest in Peace.

Esquina del Párroco

Debido a los problemas de salud de mi madre, no pude asistir a cuatro Misas importantes que deseaba celebrar el pasado fin de semana. La primera fue la Misa para la Sociedad de los Hombres (Men’s Society), la segunda fue la Misa en Memoria de los Garífuna que naufragaron en el mar de Guatemala. La tercera y cuarta fueron la celebración del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. y por supuesto la Celebración de la Altagracia en la Catedral con los feligreses Dominicanos. Mientras mis pensamientos y oraciones estaban con todos los grupos referentes, mi lugar era estar al lado de mi mamá, que en ese momento tenía una hora de vida. Desde entonces, se recuperó físicamente de aspiración, neumonía y el envenenamiento séptico. Gracias a Dios, ella ahora descansa mucho más cómoda, gracias, entre muchas cosas, sus oraciones.

Mientras tenga otra oportunidad para hablar y en algunas ocasiones, compensar mi ausencia del fin de

semana pasado. Me gustaría compartir al menos un pensamiento sobre el Dr. King. Hay muchas cosas que admiro de él, pero un rasgo quizás se destaca para mí. Era su habilidad para mantener sus ojos en el premio. Él, como Juan el Bautista, era como uno que clama en el desierto. Su misma vocación era exponer, protestar y erradicar el racismo. El nació para luchar contra el pecado del odio y para luchar por un mundo en el que una persona no sea juzgada por el color de su piel, sino por el contenido de su carácter. No hay duda de que, como ministro cristiano, este premio supremo fue el Cielo. Pero no estaba contento esperando pasivamente su recompensa eterna. Él sabía que, como cristianos, debemos construir una existencia justa y pacífica aquí en la tierra. Él sabía que tenemos la obligación de construir un mundo que refleje el Cielo.

El Domingo Pasado, vimos en el evangelio del día “El llamado de Pedro”. A pesar de que era un

pescador defectuoso de Galilea, Jesús lo llamó por su nombre para ser un "Pescador de hombres" y finalmente nuestro primer Vicario de Cristo. La leyenda nos dice que al final de su vida terrenal, Pedro siguió el consejo de los demás, mientras intentaba huir de Roma durante las persecuciones cristianas del emperador Nerón. Escapándose hacia el sur usando el Camino Apia, Pedro se encontró con el Señor Jesús, que caminaba en dirección opuesta a la Ciudad Eterna. Pedro le preguntó a Jesús, ¿Domine Quo Vadis? (Señor, ¿a dónde vas?) Jesús respondió diciendo que regresaría a Roma para ser crucificado nuevamente. Pedro sintió vergüenza por haber abandonado su rebaño. Luego decidió regresar. Esta decisión finalmente condujo a su propia crucifixión.

Apenas puedo imaginar cómo fueron esos últimos días para San Pedro, el Dr. King o cualquier mártir

de esta índole. El Dr. King, al igual que nuestro primer Papa, sabía que, si seguía dando testimonio de la Verdad y la Luz, lo iban a matar. Dr. King, fue aconsejado a que deje que ‘se calme la marea’. Estoy seguro de que algunos de sus confidentes más cercanos y familiares le dijeron que se detuviera. Después de todo, el Dr. King fue arrestado 29 veces. Se sometió a la brutalidad, la malicia y todo tipo de abuso. ¿No había hecho suficiente? Osea, ¿qué más podría hacer un hombre? Utilizó su vocación, su posición, su púlpito, sus talentos y su elocuencia. Él dio consuelo a cantidades incalculables de personas. Él dio esperanza donde no había ninguna.

Al final, él no escuchó a los que lo aconsejaron de otra manera. No escuchó la duda o las tentaciones

del maligno para decir otra "verdad". A pesar de todo, mantuvo sus "ojos en el premio", puso su "mano en el arado" y nunca miró hacia atrás. Al igual que San Pedro, en algún momento él también debió haber tenido un encuentro con el Señor. Él pudo haberle preguntado a Jesús: Señor, ¿a dónde vas? Jesús bien podría haber respondido, voy a estar con mi gente. Voy a ser encarcelado, voy a ser rociado por el cañón de agua, voy a experimentar la mordida del canino, el golpe del "billy stick " y el "blackjack". Voy a caminar con aquellos que están segregados, odiados y despreciados. Voy a ser escupido e injuriado, y por último, voy a ser linchado en un árbol. Solo Dios y Martin sabrían si el Dr. King dijo: "Te seguiré, sin importar el precio". Es este el sí, el reusarse a abandonar su rebaño, su respuesta a la Gracia singular para mantener sus "ojos en el premio", lo que más admiro. Rezo para que algún día, tenga incluso una fracción del coraje y la fe de este gran hombre. Dr. Martin Luther King, descanse en paz.
