Prayer of the Week:

Covid Plan for St Anthony’s Parish: The St Anthony’s Covid plan - put together in consultation

with the Parish Pastoral Council - has been approved by Bishop Robert. All the requirements for gathering in the church have been put in place – signage, entry and exit clearly marked, places to stand and sit adhering to social distancing requirements, hand sanitisers and cleaning program in place. We have a duty of care to positively support the health of the wider faith community, so there continue to be issues around restricting numbers in the church, social distancing and appropriate cleaning of the church each time it is used.

The Australian bishops have reminded us that all Catholics are released from their Sunday obligation in these times.

If you would like to attend our 9.15am live streamed Friday weekly mass please phone the parish office by Wednesday each week to be put on attendance list. A maximum of 20 people allowed at this time.

Planned Giving Program: If you would like to support our Parish financially, this may be done by Direct Debit, or via our weekly envelope system.

For further information, please contact the Parish Office. All contributions are gratefully accepted.

Prayer for Justice Grant us, Lord God, a vision of your world as your love would have it; a world where the weak are protected, and none go hungry or poor;

a world where the riches of creation are shared, and everyone can enjoy them; a world where different races and cultures live in harmony and mutual respect;

a world where peace is built with justice, and justice is guided by love. Give us the inspiration and courage to build it, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Wednesday weekly mass will re-commence after the school holidays – July 15. Bookings may also be required for this mass, depending on restrictions at the time. We won’t be streaming this mass.

No unwell person can attend and those who are older and/or vulnerable are asked to consider their attendance.

Sunday mass at St Patrick’s cathedral will not commence till the end of Stage Three so live streaming of Sunday mass will continue to be available from St Patrick’s Cathedral. Weekend masses at St Anthony’s may also commence at the end of Stage 3.

If you would like time for private prayer in the church please contact the parish and make an appointment. We yearn for the time we will again be able to celebrate Eucharist together as a whole St Anthony’s community.

Social Justice Thought for the Week:

Our faithfulness will depend on our willingness to go where there is brokenness, loneliness, and human need. If the church has a future it is a future with the poor in whatever form (Henri J.M. Nouwen, Sabbatical Journey) The church… cannot be content to play the part of a nurse looking after the casualties of the system. It must play an active part both in challenging the present unjust structures and in pioneering alternatives. (Donal Dorr)

Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First reading – 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16

This is a holy man of God; let him rest here One day as Elisha was on his way to Shunem, a woman of rank who lived there pressed him to stay and eat there. After this he always broke his journey for a meal when he passed that way. She said to her husband, ‘Look, I am sure the man who is constantly passing our way must be a holy man of God. Let us build him a small room on the roof, and put a bed in it, and a table and chair and lamp; whenever he comes to us he can rest there.’

One day when he came, he retired to the upper room and lay down. ‘What can be done for her then?’ he asked. Gehazi (his servant) answered, ‘Well, she has no son and her husband is old.’ Elisha said, ‘Call her.’ The servant called her and she stood at the door. This time next year,’ he said ‘you will hold a son in your arms.’ The word of God.

Responsorial Psalm – Psalm 88

R: For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. I will sing for ever of your love, O Lord; through all ages my mouth will proclaim your truth. Of this I am sure, that your love lasts for ever, that your truth is firmly established as the heavens. R. Happy the people who acclaim such a king, who walk, O Lord, in the light of your face, who find their joy every day in your name, who make your justice the source of their bliss. R. For it is you, O Lord, who are the glory of their strength; it is by your favour that our might is exalted: for our ruler is in the keeping of the Lord; our king in the keeping of the Holy One of Israel. R. Second reading – Romans 6:3-4, 8-11

When we were baptised we went into the tomb with Christ, so that we too might live a new life

When we were baptised in Christ Jesus we were baptised in his death; in other words, when we were baptised we went into the tomb with him and joined him in death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might live a new life.

But we believe that having died with Christ we shall return to life with him: Christ, as we know, having been raised from the dead will never die again. Death has no power over him any more. When he died, he died, once for all, to sin, so his life now is life with God; and in that way, you too must consider yourselves to be dead to sin but alive for God in Christ Jesus.

The word of God.

Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy people. Praise God who called you out of darkness and into his marvellous light. Alleluia!

Gospel – Matthew 10:37-42

Anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it Jesus instructed the Twelve as follows: ‘Anyone who prefers father or mother to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who prefers son or daughter to me is not worthy of me. Anyone who does not take his cross and follow in my footsteps is not worthy of me. Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it.

‘Anyone who welcomes you welcomes me; and those who welcome me welcome the one who sent me. ‘Anyone who welcomes a prophet will have a prophet’s reward; and anyone who welcomes a holy man will have

a holy man’s reward. ‘If anyone gives so much as a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is a disciple, then I tell you

solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.’ The Gospel of the Lord.

A Reflection By Pope Francis

Today’s liturgy presents to us the last lines of the missionary discourse in Chapter 10 of the Gospel of Matthew, by which Jesus instructs the twelve apostles at the moment in which, for the first time, he sends them on mission to the villages of Galilee and Judea. In this final part, Jesus underscores two essential aspects for the life of a missionary disciple: the first, that his bond with Jesus is stronger than any other bond; the second, that the missionary brings not himself, but Jesus, and through Him the love of the heavenly Father. These two aspects are connected, because the more Jesus is at the centre of the heart and of the life of a disciple, the more this disciple is “transparent” to His presence. The two go hand in hand.

“He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me...”, Jesus says. A father’s affection, a mother’s tenderness, the gentle friendship among brothers and sisters, all this, even while being very good and valid, cannot be placed before Christ. Not because he wants us to be heartless and ungrateful, but rather, on the contrary, because the condition of a disciple demands a priority relationship with the teacher. Any disciple, whether a layman or laywoman, a priest or a bishop: an all-absorbing relationship. Perhaps the first question that we must ask a Christian is: “Do you meet with Jesus? Do you pray to Jesus?”. The relationship. One could almost paraphrase the Book of Genesis: Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and cleave to Jesus and the two shall become one (cf. Gen 2:24).

Those who allow themselves to be drawn into this bond of love and of life with the Lord Jesus become his representatives, his “ambassadors”, above all in the way of being, of living. To the point that Jesus himself, in sending his disciples on mission, says to them: “He who receives you receives me, and he who receives me receives him who

sent me”. It is important that the people be able to perceive that for that disciple Jesus is truly “the Lord”; He is truly the centre of his or her life, the everything of life.

It does not matter then if, as for every human being, he or she has limitations and even makes mistakes — as long as he or she has the humility to recognize them; the important thing is that they not have a duplicitous heart — and this is dangerous. I am a Christian; I am a disciple of Jesus; I am a priest; I am a bishop, but I have a duplicitous heart. No, this is not okay. One must not have a duplicitous heart, but a simple, cohesive heart; [one must] not keep one foot in two shoes, but be honest with oneself and with others. Duplicity is not Christian. This is why Jesus prays to the Father so that the disciples may not fall prey to the worldly spirit. You are either with Jesus, with the spirit of Jesus, or you are with the spirit of the world.

Here our experience as priests teaches us something very beautiful, something very important: it is precisely this welcoming of the holy, faithful People of God; it is precisely that “cup of cold water” that the Lord speaks of today in the Gospel, given with affectionate faith, which helps you to be a good priest! There is a reciprocity in mission too: if you leave everything for Jesus, the people recognize the Lord in you; but at the same time it helps you to convert each day to him, so as to renew and purify yourself from compromises and to overcome temptations. The closer a priest is to the People of God, the closer will he feel to Jesus, and the closer a priest is to Jesus, the closer will he feel to the People of God.

The Virgin Mary felt in the first person what it means to love Jesus by separating herself from him, giving new meaning to family ties, beginning with faith in him. With her maternal intercession, may she help us to be free and happy missionaries of the Gospel.

The Universal Prayer Sunday June 28th

– 13th

Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrant: Sisters and brothers, God’s word today has taught us about how the grace of hospitality, the new life of baptism and courage in carrying our own cross, all draw us closer to Jesus Christ. That Pope Francis, successor to the Apostle Peter, will be filled with grace and sustained with good health, as he and the Church prepare to celebrate the Holy Apostles, Peter and Paul on Monday. Lord, hear us. That within our own faith and culture we will learn from other faiths and cultures how important and liberating it is to offer hospitality to the poor and the homeless, the stranger and the lonely, the sick and frightened. Lord, hear us. That every day Christians will value the new life which they received in baptism, so that by dying to the sins of selfishness, greed and violence, they will, in the Spirit, be thoughtful of others, generous in charity and peaceful in relationships. Lord, hear us. That for the people of the land where Jesus lived, walked, died and rose, there will be a new opportunity, led by universal diplomacy, to secure border stability for Israel and Palestine, shared water resources, equal opportunities for living with dignity and freedom of movement. Lord, hear us. That as the rates of Covid 19 infection continue to increase around the world, governments and citizens will continue to play their part in striving to halt its spread and assist those whose lives are affected by it. Lord, hear us. May Christ bring to everlasting life those who have died, especially from the Corona virus and bring consolation to their families. We remember all those we know who have died recently: Robert Carter, Josephine Cummings, Owen Potter, Sr Patricia MacGinley rsm

Our loved ones whose anniversaries are at this time: Laurie Reedy, Jeff Scully

the deceased priests of the Diocese ……. And all those who are sick. Lord, hear us. Celebrant: Eternal God, with joy we walk in the light of your face, and as our lives are secure in your truth, enable us to work for justice everywhere. Through Christ our Lord.

(St Alphonsus)

To our St Anthony’s Parish family,

Hi all, we have a different ‘messenger’ this week as Maria has been relaxing at the beach, keeping much warmer than us!

Last Friday we had our first mass with parishioners in attendance, since lockdown commenced. It was great to see our regulars back in the pews and I know they enjoyed the experience as well. Unfortunately our numbers are limited so be sure to give the office a call to book a seat. We are booked out again for this Friday (June 26).

After the school holidays Fr Michael will be celebrating Wednesday masses with us again – first one on July 15. This will NOT be live streamed but numbers will still be limited as per restrictions at that time. Further info to follow as we get closer to the date.

School holidays start this week so we hope all the teachers and students enjoy their time off and come back refreshed and ready to hit the books again in term 3.

Playgroup is hoping to re-start after the holidays on July 13 so mark your calendars for that one.

In the past week several of our parishioners have lost family members – Paul & Angela Carter (daughter of Joe & Mary Wagner) lost their baby son at just 20 weeks. Bernie Cummings’ daughter Josephine died suddenly of a heart attack and Joan Potter’s brother-in-law Owen passed away. Our thoughts and prayers go out to them and their families.

Hope you all stay safe and warm. Don’t forget to call and book a seat for mass. Until next week… Noela
