Dear Parishioners,

In the ninth chapter of his Gospel, St. Matthew describes

the commissioning of the twelve apostles by Jesus as they are

sent out to proclaim the good news to all the world. From that

moment the church has been a missionary body reaching out to

all nations to proclaim the Good News. We experience this world-

wide missionary spirit when we are asked to contribute to victims

of natural disasters around the world and when we hear personal

appeals by missionaries.

In 1815 Bishop Louis Duboury of New Orleans traveled

to France to take up a collection for his diocese in New Orleans.

Five years later a delegation was sent to Rome and they received

a blessing from Pope Pius VII. In 1840 Pope Gregory XVI placed

the newly founded society which grew out of the earlier meetings

in the ranks of Universal Catholic Institutions, and on March25,

1904 this society was recommended by Pope Pius X to the body

of the Catholic faithful. Out of all of this came the Pontifical

Society of the Propagation of the Faith. Each diocese has an

office of "the Proppy" which responds to appeals from missionary

dioceses and parishes throughout the world.

Cardinal Cushing, as a young priest, was appointed head

of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and in the

succeeding ten years he met and responded to missionaries from

throughout the world. As Bishop he invited any of these groups,

both religious men and women, into the Archdiocese, and in the

late fifties he answered Pope John XXIII's call to found a

missionary society, the Society of St. James the Apostle to

minister to needy dioceses in South America. He also instituted a

missionary co-operative program whereby every parish in the

Archdiocese is assigned one missionary appeal each year. We are

happy to welcome Bishop Maurice Muldoon retired bishop from

the Honduras to our parish to make this annual appeal.

Sincerely,

Fr John R. Mulvehill

HOLY RELICS OF ST. ANTHONY WILL

VISIT OUR PARISH ON SUNDAY

OCTOBER 15,2017

Fr. Mulvehill has invited Friar Mario Conte to

bring the holy and first-class relics to our Parish on Sunday, October 15. Veneration will be before and

after each mass: 8 AM, 9:30 AM, 11:30 AM and 5

PM, with veneration all afternoon.

Father Mario Conte, OFM Conv, Executive Editor of the

Messenger of Saint Anthony, will travel from the Basilica of Saint

Anthony of Padua, in Padua, Italy, with two relics of the beloved

saint.

One reliquary contains the floating rib of Saint Anthony and the

other reliquary contains layers of the saint’s skin. The reliquary,

which contains the floating rib, is quite blessed because of its association with Pope Francis and Sister Lucy of Fatima, both of

who received the holy reliquary.

Saint Anthony of Padua is known to millions of Catholics for ‘lost

items.

Father Mulvehill and Deacon Paul Rooney are very pleased to

welcome the relics of Saint Anthony, a dear friend and lifelong

intercessor in the Catholic World. Please join them for this special

day of devotion, mass, novenas and veneration. Prayer petitions

will be distributed by Fr. Mario and his staff to allow parishioners

to write their prayer petition to the saint. Father Mario will bring

the petitions back to the Basilica in Padua and place them at the tomb of Saint Anthony. The tour officially ends back at the Tomb

of Saint Anthony where the Friars will gather to pray for the

saint’s intercession upon our intentions and requests.

In an address in Cologne, Germany 2005, Pope Benedict

Emeritus said of relics “By inviting us to venerate the mortal

remains of the martyrs and saints, the Church does not forget that

in the end, these are indeed just human bones, but they are bones

that belonged to individuals touched by the living power of God.

The relics of the saints are of that invisible but real presence

which sheds light upon the shadows of the world and reveals the

Kingdom of Heaven in our midst.”

We rejoice with the families of our new

brothers and sisters who recently received

the Sacrament of Baptism

Blessing of the Animals October 1 All creatures great and small are invited to this

blessing in honor of St. Francis of Assisi.

Creatures and their owners should gather at 3:00

PM in the church parking lot. Come join the fun!

We begin a new year in the youth group.

The truth is I was going to retire last year.

After 18 years I found myself needing to

move on. My time was done. There was no relevance anymore.

Then something happened. Many left the group during the course

of last year for various reasons, family vacations etc. A few, 15 to

be exact stayed the course. They worked tirelessly during our

fundraising campaigns. They epitomized exactly what Jesus is

asking of all of us. They never considered what they were doing

was a sacrifice. It was simply what they had to do to stand up for

what they believed. Quietly, humbly moving along, preparing for

our final trip to this area in Kentucky. They wanted to re-build the

youth group so that more could understand and find God's love

through the process. They were and are willing to fight the good

fight and take on the tasks presented to them, not by me but by

God. How could I leave. You see it is not that I had to be

relevant, it is all of us. We do not do this so we can be

recognized. We do it because we believe in something and we

believe there is a lot of good in this world and it is worth fighting

for. This group is amazing and we want to grow this group not

because of the numbers. We want all the other amazing young

people to join so they can understand the power they have within.

There are not just a few of you out there. It is all of you.

[email protected]. Let us know if you want to experience

something wonderful. We meet every Wednesday night at 7 in

the parish hall. Bill Mezzetti
