LETTER OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS TO THE FAITHFUL FOR THE MONTH OF MAY 2020

The month of May is approaching, a time when the People of God express with particular intensity their love and devotion for the Blessed Virgin Mary. It is tradi-tional in this month to pray the Rosary at home within the family. The restrictions of the pandemic have made us come to appreciate all the more this “family” as-pect, also from a spiritual point of view.

For this reason, I want to encourage everyone to rediscover the beauty of praying the Rosary at home in the month of May. This can be done either as a group or individually; you can decide according to your own situations, making the most of both opportunities. The key to doing this is always simplicity, and it is easy also on

the internet to find good models of prayers to follow.

I am also providing two prayers to Our Lady that you can recite at the end of the Rosary, and that I my-self will pray in the month of May, in spiritual union with all of you. I include them with this letter so that they are available to everyone.

Dear brothers and sisters, contemplating the face of Christ with the heart of Mary our Mother will make us even more united as a spiritual family and will help us overcome this time of trial. I keep all of you in my prayers, especially those suffering most greatly, and I ask you, please, to pray for me. I thank you, and with great affection I send you my blessing.

First Prayer

O Mary, You shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who, at the foot of the cross, were united with Jesus’ suffering, and persevered in your faith.

“Protectress of the Roman people”, you know our needs, and we know that you will provide, so that, as at Cana in Galilee, joy and celebration may return after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the will of the Father and to do what Jesus tells us. For he took upon himself our suffering, and bur-dened himself with our sorrows to bring us, through the cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

Second Prayer “We fly to your protection, O Holy Mother of God”.

In the present tragic situation, when the whole world is prey to suffering and anxiety, we fly to you, Mother of God and our Mother, and seek refuge under your protection.

Virgin Mary, turn your merciful eyes towards us amid this coronavirus pandemic. Comfort those who are distraught and mourn their loved ones who have died, and at times are buried in a way that grieves them deeply. Be close to those who are concerned for their loved ones who are sick and who, in order to prevent the spread of the disease, cannot be close to them. Fill with hope those who are troubled by the uncertainty of the future and the consequences for the economy and employment.

Mother of God and our Mother, pray for us to God, the Father of mercies, that this great suffering may end and that hope and peace may dawn anew. Plead with your divine Son, as you did at Cana, so that the families of the sick and the victims be comforted, and their hearts be opened to confidence and trust.

Protect those doctors, nurses, health workers and volunteers who are on the frontline of this emergency, and are risking their lives to save others. Support their heroic effort and grant them strength, generosity and continued health.

Be close to those who assist the sick night and day, and to priests who, in their pastoral concern and fi-delity to the Gospel, are trying to help and support everyone.

Blessed Virgin, illumine the minds of men and women engaged in scientific research, that they may find effective solutions to overcome this virus.

Support national leaders, that with wisdom, solicitude and generosity they may come to the aid of those lacking the basic necessities of life and may devise social and economic solutions inspired by farsighted-ness and solidarity.

Mary Most Holy, stir our consciences, so that the enormous funds invested in developing and stockpiling arms will instead be spent on promoting effective research on how to prevent similar tragedies from occur-ring in the future.

Beloved Mother, help us realize that we are all members of one great family and to recognize the bond that unites us, so that, in a spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we can help to alleviate countless situations of poverty and need. Make us strong in faith, persevering in service, constant in prayer.

Mary, Consolation of the afflicted, embrace all your children in distress and pray that God will stretch out his all-powerful hand and free us from this terrible pandemic, so that life can serenely resume its normal course.

To you, who shine on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope, do we entrust ourselves, O Clement, O Loving, O Sweet Virgin Mary. Amen.

Renewing the Consecration of the United States to the Care of Our Blessed Mother

As the world continues to face the ongoing effects of the global pandemic of the coronavirus, Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los

Angeles and president of the USCCB has announced that the U.S. bishops will join the Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops on May 1 in renewing the consecrations of the two nations to the care of our Blessed Mother.

Through a collective dedication or entrustment of a nation to Mary, an act of consecration is meant to be a reminder to the faithful of the Blessed Mother’s witness to the Gospel and to ask for her effective intercession before her Son on behalf of those in need.

The consecration on May 1. follows a similar action of the bishops’ conference of Latin America and the Caribbean (CELAM) who consecrated their nations to Our Lady of Guadalupe on Easter Sunday. This prayer reaffirms and renews previous Marian

entrustments, and it unites us in solidarity with our Holy Father, who recently established the Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of the Church, as a source of protection and strength.

Archbishop Gomez will lead a brief liturgy with the prayer of re-consecration on Friday, May 1 at 3:00 pm EDT and has invited the bishops to join in from their respective dioceses and asked them to extend the invitation to the faithful in their dioceses for their participation. A liturgy guide will be available to assist the faithful who may join in by tuning into the USCCB’s social media plat-

forms: Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Se aproxima el mes de mayo, en el que el pueblo de Dios manifiesta con particular intensidad su amor y devoción a la Virgen María. En este mes, es tradición rezar el Rosario en casa, con la familia. Las restricciones de la pandemia nos han “obligado” a valorizar esta dimensión doméstica, también desde un punto de vista espiritual.

Por eso, he pensado proponerles a todos que redescubramos la belleza de rezar el Rosario en casa durante el mes de mayo. Ustedes pueden elegir, según la situa-

ción, rezarlo juntos o de manera personal, apreciando lo bueno de ambas posibilidades. Pero, en cualquier caso, hay un secreto para hacerlo: la sencillez; y es fácil encontrar, incluso en internet, buenos esquemas de oración para seguir.

Además, les ofrezco dos textos de oraciones a la Virgen que pueden recitar al final del Rosario, y que yo mismo diré durante el mes de mayo, unido espiritualmente a ustedes. Los adjunto a esta carta para que estén a disposición de todos.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas: Contemplar juntos el rostro de Cristo con el corazón de María, nuestra Madre, nos unirá todavía más como familia espiritual y nos ayudará a superar esta prueba. Oración a María

Oh María, tú resplandeces siempre en nuestro camino como un signo de salvación y esperanza. A ti nos encomendamos, Salud de los enfermos, que al pie de la cruz fuiste asociada al dolor de Jesús, manteniendo firme tu fe. Tú, Salvación del pueblo romano, sabes lo que necesitamos y estamos seguros de que lo concederás para que, como en Caná de Galilea, vuelvan la alegría y la fiesta después de esta prueba.

Ayúdanos, Madre del Divino Amor, a conformarnos a la voluntad del Padre y hacer lo que Jesús nos dirá, Él que tomó nuestro sufrimiento sobre sí mismo y se cargó de nuestros dolores para guiarnos a través de la cruz, a la alegría de la resurrección. Amén.

Oración a María «Bajo tu amparo nos acogemos, Santa Madre de Dios». En la dramática situación actual, llena de sufrimientos y angustias que oprimen al mundo entero, acudimos a ti, Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, y buscamos refugio bajo tu protección. Oh Virgen María, vuelve a nosotros tus ojos misericordiosos en esta pandemia de coronavirus, y con-suela a los que se encuentran confundidos y lloran por la pérdida de sus seres queridos, a veces se-pultados de un modo que hiere el alma. Sostiene a aquellos que están angustiados porque, para evitar el contagio, no pueden estar cerca de las personas enfermas. Infunde confianza a quienes viven en el temor de un futuro incierto y de las consecuencias en la economía y en el trabajo. Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, implora al Padre de misericordia que esta dura prueba termine y que volvamos a encontrar un horizonte de esperanza y de paz. Como en Caná, intercede ante tu Divino Hijo, pidiéndole que consuele a las familias de los enfermos y de las víctimas, y que abra sus corazo-

nes a la esperanza. Protege a los médicos, a los enfermeros, al personal sanitario, a los voluntarios que en este periodo de emergencia combaten en primera línea y arriesgan sus vidas para salvar otras vidas. Acompaña su heroico esfuerzo y concédeles fuerza, bondad y salud. Permanece junto a quienes asisten, noche y día, a los enfermos, y a los sacerdotes que, con solicitud pastoral y compromiso evangélico, tratan de ayudar y sostener a todos. Virgen Santa, ilumina las mentes de los hombres y mujeres de ciencia, para que encuentren las soluciones adecuadas y se venza este virus. Asiste a los líderes de las naciones, para que actúen con sabiduría, diligencia y generosidad, socorriendo a los que carecen de lo necesario para vivir, planificando soluciones sociales y económicas de largo alcance y con un espíritu de solidaridad. Santa María, toca las conciencias para que las grandes sumas de dinero utilizadas en la incrementación y en el perfeccionamiento de armamentos sean destinadas a promover estudios adecuados para la prevención de futuras catástrofes similares. Renovando la Consagración de los Estados Unidos al Cuidado de Nuestra Madre Santísima.

A medida que el mundo con nua enfrentando los efectos con nuos de la pandemia mundial del coronavirus, el Arzobispo Jose H. Gómez de Los Ángeles y el presidente de la USCCB ha anunciado que los

Obispos de Estados Unidos se unirán a la Conferencia Canadiense de Obispos Católicos el primero de Mayo para renovar la consagración de las dos naciones al cuidado de nuestra Madre San sima.

A través de una dedicación colec va o la encomienda de una nación a María, y el acto de consagración pretende ser un recordatorio para los fieles del tes monio de la San sima Madre al Evangelio y para

pedir su intercesión efec va ante su Hijo en nombre de los necesitados.

La consagración el primero de Mayo sigue una acción similar de la conferencia Episcopal de América La na y el Caribe (CELAM) que consagro sus naciones a Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe el Domingo de

Pascua. Esta oración reafirma y renueva las encomiendas Marianas anteriores, y nos une en solidaridad con nuestro Santo Padre, quien recientemente establecido el monumento a la San sima Virgen María,

Madre de la Iglesia, como fuente de protección y fortaleza.

El Arzobispo Gómez dirigirá una breve liturgia con la oración de re-consagracion el Viernes Primero de Mayo a las 3:00pm EDT y ha invitado a los Obispos a unirse desde sus respec vas diócesis y les ha

Thème : Appelés pour annoncer Jésus-Christ « Ce n’est pas vous qui m’avez choisi, c’est moi qui vous ai choisis et institués pour que vous alliez, que vous portiez du fruit… » (Jn 15,16). L’appel au sacerdoce et à la vie religieuse n’est pas le fruit de l’effort humain, ni la résultante de nos vertus et de nos mérites, c’est une initiative gratuite venant de Dieu. Appelés par Jésus pour être ses disciples, ses associés, ses témoins et du même coup les fondements de l’Église, les Apôtres ont reçu leur sacerdoce et leur apostolat par un plan divin évident. Aussi le Christ leur a confié la tâche de poursuivre son œuvre dans le monde pour édifier le Royaume. Il leur confère le pouvoir de consacrer et d’absoudre les péchés. Et il leur promet l’Esprit Saint pour les aider dans une mission qui transcende leurs forces humaines1. La mission c’est la vie de l’Église. C’est l’Église qui est envoyée dans le monde au moyen des missionnaires pour annoncer l’Évangile et en témoigner. Dans un monde où l’on sent qu’il y a une perte du sens du sacré, où les gens ont davantage tendance à s’affirmer indépendamment des autres, où aussi et surtout ils ont une soif inouïe de la Parole de Dieu, l’annonce de cette parole s’avère nécessaire pour une réorientation intégrale de l’humain. Voilà pourquoi, aujourd’hui encore, Dieu ne cesse de faire de nouveaux appelés pour l’annonce pressante de sa Bonne Nouvelle. Fr. Charlince Vendredy
