Gospel Reflection - Luke 16:19-31
There was a rich man who dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day. And lying at his door was a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man’s table. Dogs even used to come and lick his sores.” Luke 16:19-21
From one perspective, Lazarus was existing in a very undesirable state. He was poor, starving, and miserable. He was covered with sores that dogs would lick. This is very descriptive language used by Jesus and it’s helpful to do your best to imagine this miserable physical state that Lazarus was in.
The key to this story is that even though Lazarus was in a miserable physical condition, his soul was in the hands of God. We know that to be true, because we are told that when he died, he was “carried away by angels to the bosom of Abraham” (Luke 16:22).
This story provides us all with an opportunity to look at what is most important in life. The rich man had all he wanted in this life but clearly lacked charity on account of the fact that he ignored the physical needs of Lazarus. For that reason, the rich man was spiritually impoverished, whereas Lazarus was spiritually prosperous.
When you can keep your eyes on what is most important in life, spiritual wealth, it will make the many other hardships you endure less burdensome. Perhaps you will never be in the same physical condition as Lazarus, but you may encounter other great pains and hardships in life. When this happens, the tendency may be to become fixated upon those sufferings and to take your eyes off your interior union with God.
Reflect, today, upon how you would deal with living like Lazarus. Reflect upon what your own “sores” are in life. They may be varied in type, degree and number from those of other people’s sufferings, , but they will be encountered in your life. As you identify your suffering, turn your eyes from it to the presence of God in your soul, and allow His presence to fill you with the riches of His grace.
Call to Conscience”Campaign– The campaign is ongoing. In fact if anyone has not yet written their MLA or Minister of Health now's the time as the bill is going to second reading.Reminder
to all parishioners to support BILL 34 which has been put forward by the Gov. of Man. And aims to protect health care professionals from those seeking to impose a requirement to perform or aid in the performance of medical assisted dying. Copies of letters to MLAs are at the church
entrance along with more information regarding this very important cause. We urge all our parishioners to sign the letter in support of this important cause. You may mail the letter
yourself or leave it at the parish and we will mail them to the your MLA for you. (Postage is required on letters to elected officials in Manitoba.)
This is an effort that cannot be ignored! This is a fight that cannot be lost!
The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate and the Auxiliary of Holy Family Home are reaching out to the UCWLC for help in providing Traditional Ukrainian savouries for their annual Christmas Bake Sale. Donations of perogies, holobsti, perishky etc. are greatly appreciated.
The bake sale will be held on Dec. 8, 2017
Our First Bishop" - The Story of Blessed Bishop and Martyr Nykyta Budka A new resource for parish catechists and Catholic school educators has just been released! A learning guide for young students is now available entitled, "Our First Bishop" - The Story of Blessed Bishop and Martyr Nykyta Budka - First Bishop for Ukrainian Catholics in Canada' is a learning guide for young students. It introduces readers to the world of Ukrainian Catholic leaders at a time when Canada was itself taking shape as a nation. Students will gain a broader understanding of how the story of ‘Our First Bishop' fits into the broader scheme of history, while making connections to modern times.
The reader will discover who Nykyta Budka was as a young boy, how he came to be a bishop, what he did in Canada and ultimately, how he
came to be called Blessed. The storyline itself is complemented with historical photographs and artifacts. A variety of teaching graphics will help link many historical themes to children's lives
today. In addition, a ‘Words to Know' feature will help understand specific vocabulary pertinent to the story. Catechists will appreciate the 'What is a Holy Relic?' and 'Steps to Sainthood' features. The
booklet is available to download and print from the following links (choose black & white or full color version): http://archeparchy.ca/wcm-docs/docs/our_first_bishop_color.pdf
