Dear Members and Friends of St. Mary of the Assump"on Parish, We pray that you and your loved ones are healthy and safe as the public celebra"on of Masses returns while observing stringent safety recommenda"ons, and local public spaces like Nantasket Beach and businesses begin to reopen in phas-es. We, the members of St. Mary of the Assump"on Parish Finance Council, want to share a few updates on parish ac"vi-"es during these challenging "mes. Even though public celebra"on of Masses had to be suspended and other Sacraments, ministries, and programs curtailed and rescheduled, a lot has been going on these quiet months of lockdown, quaran"ne and social distancing. Father Sco! welcomed three seminarians from St. John Seminary to be in residence as they completed their semester online, and has maintained an ac"ve schedule in the midst of the pandemic. Though one of the seminarians moved to St. Mary Parish in Brookline for his summer assignment, two remained for their summer assignment and a third seminarian arrived to begin a two-year assignment with us as he con"nues his forma"on at the seminary, all leading, God willing, to diaconate ordina"on in spring 2021 and priesthood ordina"on in spring 2022. The seminarians have helped Father Sco! with spir-itual and pastoral ac"vi"es and parish life at both St. Mary Parish and St. Anthony Parish. In addi"on, Fr. Sco! announced recently that Cardinal Seán has appointed a second priest, Fr. Will Sexton, to join him in serving both parishes. Fr. Will arrived in our parishes on July 1. As men"oned, Father Sco! has remained ac"ve during this "me – using electronic means to meet with parish leadership (Pastoral Council, Finance Council, Staff), launching the 90 Days Now – For Your Parish pla*orm, strengthening the parish’s social media ministry, working on a pastoral plan, including the recently started Year of the Eucharist, through August 2021, and reaching out to parishioners through phone, mail, and email. The closing of churches has brought about the “live streaming” of Masses and celebra"ons of other Sacraments and prayer services. St. Mary of the Assump"on Parish now welcomes its benefits with the installa"on of professional live streaming technology in St. Ann Church. It helps maintain a high level of visibility and availability and is much appreciated by people who cannot a!end services and events in person. And more good news, the cost of this technology was re-cently contributed by a parishioner. The economic impact of the pandemic on St. Mary Parish is significant. While we are truly grateful to parishioners who have con"nued their financial support of the parish through electronic giving or by mailing their offertory envelopes to, or dropping them off at, the parish offices, the stay-at-home advisory and suspension of Masses and most parish minis-tries has caused a drop in offertory by approximately 50% of budgeted amounts. Yet our fixed opera"ng expenses con"n-ue. Expenses are monitored carefully, and federal funds made available through the SBA lending program were applied for and received, allowing us to retain staff as we plan for the future. We want you to be aware of our current financial posi"on. It is our hope that in knowing our financial needs you will con-sider ways you are able to help our parish through these unusual and difficult "mes. Your parish needs your help. We look forward to presen"ng you with an annual report for July 1, 2019-June 30, 2020 and a budget for July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021 this fall, and formal fundraising plans soon a$er that.
