Page 2 - Issue 37 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME September 16, 2018

In my last bulletin article, I wrote about true friendship, and how our modern world has so distorted the meaning of friendship that we no longer know how to form true friendships. Our culture even makes it hard for us to find models of how to be a true friend. True friendships take time, effort, and virtue to form. Our culture teaches us to demand instant gratification with minimal effort, while ignoring or ridiculing virtue. Still, our human need for deep friendships remains. No amount of shallow rela-tionships can fill that need, even if we acquire hundreds of fol-lowers or “friends” on social media. Furthermore, no relationship that leads us away from God can be called a true friendship, because our ultimate happiness and fulfillment is only achieved through holiness of life. A friend, who is an obstacle to our union with God, where our greatest happiness is found, is no true friend at all. How can we form these true friendships that lead to happiness? Let me suggest three steps that are crucial, though by no means exhaustive. First, we ourselves must become the kind of person who can be a true friend. In other words, become virtuous. Build the habits that will allow you to form deeper friendships, through repeated acts of prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance, gener-osity, humility, patience, integrity, and purity of heart. Repeat virtuous acts, and eventually that virtue will become a part of you. If you don’t know where to start, discern which of these virtues (or any other) you particularly need to work on, and focus on that one. You could find a few saints who modeled that virtue well, and pray, asking them to intercede for you as you under-take the difficult work of growing in virtue. Second, as you reflect upon those people in your life who are more than just acquaintances, ask yourself which of them are also committed to pursuing a life of greater holiness and virtue. Those are the friends who have the potential to form a deeper friendship with you, since you share a common goal of pursuing happiness through a virtuous life. Friendships are stronger when friends share common goals, interests, and activ-ities. How much deeper will friendship be between friends who share the basic goals of virtue and holiness! By advice and en-couragement, and by praying for each other, they will help each other reach their deepest goals. Third, true friendship requires effort. It requires us to give of ourselves to our friends, and for them to do the same in return. It requires us to do the hard work of calling them to virtue and of letting them do the same for us. It requires us to share life with them in some way. This can be through common activi-ties, but most importantly this takes place through conversation. Amid the extreme business of our lives, even if we could be “getting something else done,” we must sometimes “waste time” in conversation or even in quiet presence with our friends. One of the best settings for conversation between friends has always been over a meal. Food for the body facili-tates the heart-to-heart conversation of friends which feeds the soul. One of the best conversations Jesus ever had with his friends was at the Last Supper. St. John recorded this in his Gospel, especially in chapter 15, which has much to say about friendship. “No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” A true friend is not one from whom you can take benefits for yourself. A true friend is one who will in some way lay down his life for you. To be truly happy, we must do the same. –Deacon David Frank
