From The Desk of Msgr. Matthew Mitas: REMEMBER THAT AUGUST IS THE MONTH OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT!
ASSUMPTION
This coming Saturday, August 15, is the Feast of Our Lady’s Assumption. Normally, it would be a holy
day of obligation, but since it falls on a Saturday this year, it is still a very big feast day, but there is no obliga-
tion to attend Mass attached to it. Nevertheless, we will still have a special Mass for the great feast day next
Saturday at 8:00AM. Let us honor the Sinless One on her heavenly festival!
I AM SCAM, SCAM I AM
That’s probably what Dr. Suess would have written had he lived in the era of hacked e-mails and co-opted
computers. Apparently, somebody has hijacked my name again and is reaching out to certain parishioners
sending out bogus messages, purportedly from me, asking you to respond. I assure you, these are not from
me, and I would not be the least bit offended if you didn’t respond to them. (In fact, if you did, I would prob-
ably lose respect for you for not recognizing the flim-flam!) Be advised!
OUR NEW ARCHBISHOP
Abp.-elect Mitchell Rozanski will be formally installed as our tenth archbishop at a special Mass in the
Cathedral-Basilica at 2:00PM on the Feast of St. Louis, Tuesday, August 25. This Mass will not be open to
the public (the Wuhan Flu, don’tcha know) but it will be televised live on ESPN and on the Cathedral’s own
live-streaming. Please pray for him!
QUIZ-A-CATHOLIC
Music constitutes a very large and significant portion of the Church’s divine liturgy, and rightly so.
The ancient maxim is: “He who sings prays twice”. Our Archdiocese has contributed a lot to the liturgical
music scene, especially in the last fifty years, with certain individuals, lay, clergy, and religious, taking part. See
how many of these contributors you know:
1. Taking an ancient melody, this local pastor and great liturgist added new words and gave us “To
Jesus Christ Our Sovereign King”.
2. Also taking an old, familiar tune, this prolific author and great pastor gave us the Trinitarian hymn,
“God Father Praise and Glory”.
3. This former seminarian (Prep South and Cardinal Glennon College, and Kenrick) gave us many
of the most popular songs of the “guitar Mass” era, including “Sons of God” and “Allelu”.
4. This group of five Jesuit scholastics at St. Louis U. in the 1970’s & 80’s gave us many of the songs
that are frequently sung in Catholic worship to this day, such as “Sing to the Mountains” and
“Glory and Praise to Our God”. What did they call themselves?
5. Name as many of the men in #4 above as you can.
6. This former Vincentian seminarian in Perryville gave us the beautiful, “Here I am”.
7. Not nearly as well-known or popular as any of the above, this group of five young St. Louis U.
divinity students from a missionary order nonetheless achieved a small measure notoriety and fame
in the heyday of the 1960’s.
ANSWERS: 1. Msgr. Martin B. Hellriegel of Holy Cross Parish in Baden 2. Msgr. John Rothensteiner, author of the first great history of the Archdiocese of St. Louis. 3. Ray Repp 4. “The St. Louis Jesuits” 5. Bob Duffors, SJ, John Foley, SJ, Roc O’Connor, SJ, Dan Schutte, and Tim Manion 6. Rory Cooney 7. The Montfort Singers (aka, the “Montfort Mission Singers”)

QUOTES OF THE WEEK
“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re
uninformed; if you do read the newspaper, you’re
misinformed!” – Mark Twain (truer now than ever!) “The finest clothing made is a man’s own
skin, but, of course, society demands more than
this!” – Mark Twain, again “Pardoning the bad is injuring the good.” – Benjamin Franklin (“Poor Richard”) WORD OF THE WEEK NANOCEPHALOUS: (Adj.) Having an
extremely small head. (I thought of a lot of ways to use this word in a sentence, but none of them were nice and were all at least borderline sinful; I’m sure you can come up with your own application of this word!)

It is with very grateful hearts that we say “Goodbye” to Diana Skubic as a member of our St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Diana has been a shinning star in our conference and a wonderful spirit of Christ to our neighbors in need. Ray, her husband, also has our gratitude. If you are sitting at home thinking about how you can help. Here is an opportunity! Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference has the opportunity you are waiting for! We are in need of a secre-tary for our meetings. We only have one meeting a month on the second Tuesday of the month at 7PM. You will be able to enjoy the company of our Vincentians and sit and take notes. If you can, we would ask that you would type them and send them through email to our members. No problem if you cannot type, someone else can type your notes and send them. Don’t miss this great opportunity to give back and serve God through serving your neighbor. If you want to grab this awesome opportunity email [email protected] or call 838-6565, ext. 101
For the month of August, the St. Vincent de Paul will not have their food drive, because of the Covid 19 virus. Thank you so much St. Vincent de Paul
