My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle! “Prayer is a mysterious force, so we can’t say how, but we do believe it will save the world. We are

confident that it is already doing so.” This belief comes from all those committed to the Apostleship of Prayer. The Gospel of Christ is saving the world. Prayer supports the preaching of the Word and Christian works of love and mercy toward the poor and needy. Jesus taught us that prayer is uniting ourselves with God’s own heart — “thy will be done.” As the Bible illustrates, God repeatedly uses the prayers of His people to accomplish His own purposes in history. All who are baptized are priests before the Father, interceding for the needs of others, ushering in the Kingdom of God. The Apostleship of Prayer is such a calling, a movement, an organization, that promotes united prayer through-out the world. God asks us all to pray for ourselves and for others. Anyone can join, simply by being committed to praying a daily offering every day, and it doesn’t exclude members from any other memberships or activities. Pope Pius XII said that the Apostleship of Prayer is like a breath of fresh air that blows through all the organizations of the Church. Each year the Holy Father gives to the Apostleship of Prayer a list of 24 prayer intentions he asks us to pray for, two each month. One intention is general, often related to a serious worldwide problem, like AIDS or slave trafficking in women and children. The other intention is missionary, having to do with the spread of the Gospel in a particular part of the world like Northern Africa or China. Popes have been using the Apostleship of Prayer as a dedicated prayer group for about 120 years. For this month of January, 2016, Pope Francis asked the Apostleship of Prayer to pray for these two intentions:

1) UNIVERSAL INTENTION: Interreligious Dialogue. That sincere dialogue among men and women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace and justice.

2) EVANGELIZATION INTENTION: Christian Unity. That by means of dialogue and fraternal charity and with the grace of the Holy Spirit, Christians may overcome divisions.

Here at St. Andrew’s we incorporate these intentions during the Sunday Masses throughout the month, as well as occasionally during weekday Masses. Pope Francis said: “It is impossible for peace to exist without dialogue. All the wars, all the strife, all the unsolved problems over which we clash are due to a lack of dialogue. When there is a problem, talk: this makes peace.” But dialogue means more than talking at each other. It means listening. “And what is the deepest approach we should have in order to dialogue and not quarrel? Meekness, the ability to encounter people, to encounter cultures peacefully; the ability to ask intelligent questions. Listening to others and then speaking. All this is meekness.” Again, the Holy Father Pope Francis says, “The world expects those who claim to adore God to be men and women of peace who are capable of living as brothers and sisters, regardless of ethnic, religious, cultural or ideological differences.” This meekness in dialogue is needed among people of different faiths and also among all of us who share the Christian faith, yet are divided. Every year from January 18-25 we celebrate a time of intense prayer for Christian unity. The world wonders if peace is possible when the followers of the Prince of Peace are divided and have for centuries and into the present killed one another over their differences. Unbelievers have a hard time accepting Christianity as long as its adherents are divided. Pope Francis said that “we may not regard divisions in the Church as something natural, inevitable in any form of human association. Our divisions wound Christ’s body, they impair the witness which we are called to give to him before the world.” At the Second Vatican Council, we were reminded that “…division openly contradicts the will of Christ, scandalizes the world, and damages the sacred cause of preaching the Gospel to every creature.” All of us have been damaged by these divisions. None of us wishes to become a cause of scandal. Pope Francis concludes: “And so we are all journeying together, fraternally, on the road towards unity, bringing about unity even as we walk; that unity comes from the Holy Spirit and brings us something unique which only the Holy Spirit can do, that is, reconciling our differences. The Lord waits for us all, accompanies us all, and is with us all on this path of unity.” The world urgently needs Christian witness which demonstrates that conflicts can be overcome through dialogue and charity. Anyone can become a member of the Apostleship of Prayer simply by committing to offer yourself to God every day, offering your prayers, works, joys, and sufferings to God each day, asking that God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. As we pray and join in the Apostleship of Prayer, we open ourselves to the Holy Spirit’s power that alone can bring about unity.

The Knights of Columbus have organized a collection drive. The Knights will be collecting items to be sent to our troops overseas. Items can be dropped off from January 4 through January 31 at Romeoville Village Hall, Romeoville Recreation Center, White Oak Library and starting January 16 through January 31 at St. Andrew the Apostle Church in the collection boxes in the Administration wing.

Items our troops need are: General hygiene items, insect repellent, eye drops, men’s and women’s deodorant, shampoo, toothpaste, razors, lip balm, wet wipes,

Also needed are: Canned food items like soup, tuna, chili, ravioli, stew, dried fruits and nuts, ground coffee, pre-sweetened powdered drink mixes, beef jerky, beef sticks, batteries (AA and AAA), cookies, granola bars, protein bars, gloves, hand warmers, stamps, work socks, tube socks, white or tan t-shirts.

Hand made items are welcome: scarves, no-sew fleece blankets, quilts.

Each box costs $12.35 just for shipping of a single care package. Donations for postage are needed as well. Please make checks payable to Bishop Kaffer Knights of Columbus.

Bishop Conlon’s mailing asking for a pledge to the 2016 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA) is in the hands of many of our parishioners. If you have received the mailing, please respond as soon as possible. If you have not received it, please contact the Diocesan Development Office at 815-838-8515 This year, the theme of the Appeal is “Chosen by God’s Grace.” Can you imagine anything more precious? How did you feel when you were chosen to be on a team? Picked for a lead part in a play? Pretty special, I would imagine. Greater than anything you have or ever will be chosen for, God has chosen you to join Him and fulfill the plan He has uniquely created for you. How do we acknowledge God’s grace and show Him our gratitutde? One way is to give back to God the gifts He shared with us. We can support our parish, our diocese and the Church throughout the world with gifts of time, talent and treasure. The CMAA funds the mission and ministries of our diocese. Jesteśmy pielgrzymami na tym świecie. Bóg przypomina nam nieustannie, że ziemia do zamieszkania i wolność są dane człowiekowi po to, aby ciesząc się życiem, czcił swego Boga. W naszym życiu sprawy kultu, tak wiele razy są spychane na margines ludzkiej egzystencji. Wielu tłumaczy się, że brak czasu na codzienną modlitwę, niedzielną Mszę św., czy praktyki spowiedzi. Wiemy, że i nasza wierność, w wyniku ludzkiej słabości, wygląda różnie, że czasem tracimy zdolność rozróżniania między dobrem a złem. Every Monday or Tuesday, Fr. Gregor visits one religion classroom. This past week, he visited the Fourth Grade and spoke about benediction. Every Thursday or Friday, Fr. Michal stops in to visit with a class during religion time. On January 15, Fr. Michal visited the 6th grade religion room to talk about saints. He explained who a saint is and how they get to be saints. He then took the

class to church to show them the relic we have of Pope St. John Paul II, and he explained the three levels of relics. The students, teachers and Parents appreciate the effort the priests are making this year.

In conjunction with the Catholic Schools Office, the University of St. Francis hosts a yearly “Breakfast with the Bishop” and Prayer Service to open and celebrate the Catholic Schools Week theme, “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” One student and one parent from each of our Diocesan schools is invited to participate in a special breakfast. This year Zoie Norals, Kindergarten, represented St. Andrew the Apostle School where she and her mother, Cathy Woods, took part in the prayer service, had breakfast and got to meet the Bishop. Zoie was able to bring home a candle to remember the event.

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION CATECHUMENATE

The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

ORDERS Those seeking assistance in discerning a call to ordained ministry are encouraged to call the parish offices.
