REFLECTION

Solomon requests and receives the gift of “understanding.” Solomon understands his solemn duty as king of the people, and therefore asks for this gift “to distinguish right from wrong.”

The Psalmist picks up on this theme, praising the Lord’s word and his commands because they “shed light, giving understanding to the simple.” Jesus, furthermore, asks his disciples, “Do you understand all these things?” By his words to them, he seeks to impart that gift of understanding.

We are beneficiaries of this gift as well. If the Psalmist could praise God’s commands for giving understanding, how much more can we, who have the added benefit of the Gospels and the Church. Human reason itself can distinguish right from wrong. Enlightened and strengthened by revelation in Christ, we have no reason to be ignorant of moral truth.

Yet we see all around us Solomon's without wisdom, public officials who have responsibility to govern the people but who claim that what is right or wrong for the human family cannot be known with certainty. This problem has been addressed frequently by the Magisterium. In the 2002 “Doctrinal Note on some questions regarding the participation of Catholics in political life,” issued by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the problem is described this way: “…[Citizens claim complete autonomy with regard to their moral choices, and lawmakers maintain that they are respecting this freedom of choice by enacting laws which ignore the principles of natural ethics and yield to ephemeral cultural and moral trends, as if every possible outlook on life were of equal value.”

Today’s readings make it clear that no believer can make this claim. Part of the “good news” is that we can indeed know the difference between right and wrong, and have the strength to carry it out. Among the goods we need to preserve, the “pearl of great price” is life itself, the foundation and condition of every other right and good that we possess.

RCIA Intensive: The Journey of Faith and Conversion Leave your country, and come into the land I will show you. All members of RCIA teams are invited to be renewed and refreshed by this presentation. Friday, August 4, 2017 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Saturday, August 5, 2017 8:30 AM - 3:30 PM Through Christian initiation, newcomers to the faith join the Catholic faithful in a lifelong journey in search of God – a journey that is at once personal and shared. In the process, all are changed, converted more and more to the way of Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit and the Church. It behooves the faithful, therefore, to celebrate the RCIA earnestly and wholeheartedly! In this two-day session, presenter Kathleen Dorsey Bellow will explore with participants the spiritual richness and pastoral ramifications of paragraph 75 of the Rite that prescribes four specific elements of the formation process: appropriate catechesis, the example and prayerful support of the Christian community, participation in suitable liturgical rites and apostolic works Go to our online registration page for more information:

Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston Conducting a $150,000,000 Diocesan-wide capital campaign. IGNITE: Our Faith, Our Mission, to support renovations and modernization of St. Mary Seminary, Fund 3 Educational Endowments, Support Faith Formation and Fund Parish Needs.

HOUSTON — In 2015, a planning study was conducted in the Archdiocese of Galveston Houston to assess the

aging facilities of St. Mary’s Seminary and identity challenges facing our Catholic Schools and Faith Formation. After reviewing the study and following consultation with local pastors and Archdiocesan leadership, Daniel Cardinal DiNardo decided to initiate a major capital campaign titled “IGNITE: Our Faith, Our Mission” to raise $150 million to address these needs. During the IGNITE campaign, Guidance In Giving (GiG) Inc., a Catholic stewardship and development firm, will serve as fundraising counsel to the Archdiocese. In the year 2000, GiG collaborated with then-Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza and the Diocese of Galveston-Houston for the Jubilee Year capital campaign. Since then, the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, under the leadership of both Archbishop Joseph A. Fiorenza and Cardinal DiNardo, has seen unprecedented growth. “I have the utmost confidence in the campaign plan and in the (GiG) directors that will be working with the parishes,” Cardinal DiNardo said. “By combining the pastors’ knowledge of their respective parishes with Guidance in Giving’s knowledge of effective fundraising, I know IGNITE will have an enormous impact on the future of our faith.” The campaign consists of four major elements: Individual Parish Needs, Faith Formation, Catholic School Education and St. Mary Seminary. In the fall, our parish will initiate the IGNITE: Our Faith, Our Mission Campaign. As part of the campaign, we will be asking parishioners to donate their talent over the next few months to help, we are not looking for quantity, but quality time from our volunteers. No special qualifications are necessary to volunteer except your willingness to sacrifice a small amount of time, and you desire to see that we achieve our parish goal. The campaign Committee will be contacting volunteers the coming weekend.

RCIA for Children

You may already know that the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process through which adults enter the Catholic Church and receive the sacraments of initiation-Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist But did you know that this process is not just for Adults? It is also the process through which children who have reached the use of reason and are of catechetical age (7 years old and older) become Catholic. After a period of learning and spiritual growth, children become members of the Church at the Easter Vigil, receiving the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. In addition, children, ages 7 and older who have been baptized in another faith tradition (i.e. Lutheran, etc.) are also included in the RCIA for children process, making a Profession of Faith and receiving the SACRAMENTS of Confirmation and Eucharist. Therefore, if your child is age 7 or older and has not been baptized, or was baptized in another faith and you would like him/her to become a member of the Catholic Church, please contact Church Office for information about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Children.

PILGRIM VIRGIN STATUE OF THE BLESSED MOTHER

The Pilgrim Virtue Statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary goes to the homes as a devotion that is being done by the members of the Legion of Mary. The Holy Rosary is prayed with the family, and then encourage the family to recite the rosary together every day until the transfer of the statue to the next home. We encourage every family to experience the visit of the Blessed Mother to their homes. Please call the parish office to schedule the Blessed Mother visit to your homes.
