Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family...

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ Good stewards in a parish are like the yeast in today’s Gospel. Their selfless gifts of time and talent help the parish grow and thrive, and their example inspires others to become good stewards, too.

LORD HEAR OUR PRAYER ~ For those who are ill, and those in need of our prayers …

Dear Parishioners, We continue our study of the 13th chapter of St. Matthew’s Gospel this weekend. St. Matthew wrote to a Jewish audience which was an agrarian culture; today we continue where we left off last week with other parables about farming and planting seeds. These parables would have been well under-stood by the evangelist’s audience. They relied on their crops and their hard work. The Gospel is a reminder that despite our best efforts, sometimes things go wrong, unexpected events occur, or we can be betrayed or taken advantage of. But we rely on the Lord and his goodness. We see his hand in everything, and while we don’t always understand why things go wrong for us, we continue on the path of discipleship with Jesus as our teacher. He and he alone, leads to real life. We wish you continued blessings during your summer.

Devotedly Yours in Christ,

Father Gabe

Living Faith for Kids…

The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought…

Romans 8:26 Learning how to pray is not as hard as it sounds. You probably already know some prayers by heart. That is good. But sometimes you might want to pray to Jesus about something that is not part of your memorized prayers. You might want to ask Jesus to help you or your family or your friends. You may hold back on this kind of prayer because you are not sure what to say. This is where the Holy Spirit will help. Just find a quiet place to pray; the Holy Spirit will help you find the right words—or even no words at all! The Holy Spirit will pray what is in your heart even if you have trouble saying it.

Wisdom 12:13,16-19

Romans 8: 26-27 Psalm 86:5-6, 9-10, 15-16

Mt 13:24-43

Reflections on Today’s Readings: LITURGY OF THE WORD: In the first reading, the author of the Book of Wisdom tells us that God’s power is kind and merciful. Saint Paul teaches in Romans that the Holy Spirit helps our weakness. Matthew’s Gos-pel today relates the story of wheat and weeds, where the imperfections of life are allowed for the sake of the faithful.

FOCUS: The power of God is his mercy. The Lord desires that we be with him in eternity, but he will not violate our con-sciences in the process. For that reason, He allows us to make mistakes and then offers us His mercy. The experience of the mercy of God teaches us about His love and invites us to love our neighbors as well.

Please join us weekly on Monday mornings after the 8am Mass for the Miraculous Medal Novena, Rosary and Benediction.

Ministry Equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

The Road to Priesthood Involves a Rigorous Formation Process

Seminary formation involves much more than academic study. Prior to ordination, a candi-date for priesthood goes through a lengthy evaluation period, including an internship dur-ing which he lives in a rectory and works with priests, staff and parishioners. During this time, the candidate is judged as to his suitability to be a priest. No one is ordained unless the staff of St. John’s Seminary, including the lay faculty and formation advisers, concludes that the candidate has attained an emotional, psycho-logical and sexual maturity appropriate for his age and for the celibate life of a priest. For more information, please visit http://www.lavocations.org/ or call the Office for Vo-cations, (213) 637-7248.

Mass and Prayer Intentions Masses for living and deceased persons and Prayer Intentions can be requested by calling or visiting the Parish Office during of-fice hours. Mass cards are also available to send to your recipients. Stop by if you have any questions! Family members only can also request that names be added to the prayers for the ill section of the bulletin. Please note that the prayer list will be updated monthly start-ing August 1st. Families should let us know in advance if we should keep a name on the list from the previous month. Prayer is the place of refuge for every worry, a foundation for cheerfulness, a source of con-

stant happiness, a protection against sadness. --St. John Chrysostom

Many feel that the youth of this country are the best hope for the end of the holocaust called abortion. The Advocate is a maga-zine sponsored by Live Action, a youth-led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending abortion, the greatest hu-man rights injustice of our time. The Advo-cate employs new media to educate the public about the humanity of the unborn and investigative journalism to expose threats against the vulnerable and defense-less. Their mission statement reads: “We believe in the right to life for all human beings-from the youngest to the oldest, from concep-tion to natural death. We hope to influence the world so that every life is protected both by individual choice and by law." If you would like to help, please send an email to [email protected] or go to www.liveaction.org/advocate for an online copy of their publication.
