Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord:

It’s an inevitable fact of life that the older you get in chronological age, the more aware you become of the twilight years of life and the probability of death. As William Shakespeare stated in Act Three of his play, Romeo

and Juliet: “Well, we are born to die.” I have always preferred the quote of an anonymous Religious Sister who, during the boxer revolution of the early 1900’s in China. As she faced death with other martyrs of our Faith, Sister was asked if she feared death. She responded, “Not at all. Death is merely an invitation to take the hand of the

Lord and walk with Him into Eternity.” Now, there’s Faith; there’s consolation! We believe that God is the Author of Life. We exist because of His

loving us to life. We continue to exist because of His loving us into Eternal Life. So, why be afraid of death. I’m not advocating running around in an irresponsible manner that may result in our demise. I am advocating that each and every day we have the opportunity to thank God for the gift of life and to ask that He preserve us to the gift of

Life Eternal. That is what gives us the confidence to get out of bed each morning. That’s what should make us with every awakening: Good morning, God; instead of Good God, morning! (see the Brighton Center on Recovery for more of an explanation on that statement)

The “twilight years,” as they have come to be called, are filled with their own challenges. But they also grant us time to sit back from the grindstone of everyday life and enjoy the scent of roses; the glory of a sunset and

the beauty of the night sky—just in case we happened to overlook any or all of those in our earlier years of existing. I am glad for Seventy years of life. I am more glad for Forty-two years of Priesthood. I pray that God con-tinues to give me appreciation for whatever amount of years He grants in both of those gifts. But, most of all I pray

that He will welcome me to the Life He has prepared in the Kingdom that His Son granted me future entrance by virtue of the gift of Faith.

May God’s peace be with you all, Monsignor

Covid-19: A Prayer of Solidarity

For all who have contracted coronavirus, we pray for care and healing.

For those who are particularly vulnerable, we pray for safety and protection.

For all who experience fear or anxiety, we pray for peace of mind and spirit.

For affected families who are facing difficult decisions between food on the table or public safety, we pray for policies that recognize their plight.

For those who do not have adequate health insurance, we pray that no family will face financial burdens alone.

For those who are afraid to access care due to immigration status, we pray for recognition of the God-given dignity of all.

For our brothers and sisters around the world, we pray for shared solidarity.

For public officials and decision makers, we pray for wisdom and guidance.

Father, during this time may your Church be a sign of hope, comfort and love to all.

Grant peace, comfort and healing. Be with us, Lord. Amen.
