Dear Parishioners,
We celebrate the Coming of the Holy Spirit, the Birthday of the Church! We are conscious of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for us and we know the fruits of the Holy Spirit in us. We come to the end of the Easter Season and it was very different because of COVID-19. Each one of us has been strengthened by the presence of the Risen Christ and even though there is so much loss, that pres-ence has given us strength to cope.
The journey of re-opening is not an easy one. The Bishop has been trying to help us understand this. As I write this on Tuesday morning for publication purposes, we still have no news regarding the next stage of re-opening. Please be patient and keep an eye on Facebook. If we know something earlier, we can put the information on our websites, but as we know, this news can come very late in the week and it is not always possible to get it out to everyone. On that note, let me ask you - Do you have an email address that you can check regularly and one that is current with our parish offices? Please send that email address to our parish offices. Last weekend, we sent out 1,700 emails and still, there were some who did not get the news about the outdoor Mass. We are trying to close the gap so that as many as possible get the information on changes. Please, if you did not get that email, send us one so that we can add you to the list.
As we open, we will have many restrictions. Everything from the number of people allowed in a building, to what each one of us must do while we are there. Please note these as they are published and remember that their sole purpose is the continued safety of people. Everyone needs to act in a way that will protect everyone around us. Not all activities in our churches will open on the same day. There will have to be significant time for cleaning and sanitizing. Those of you who have visited St. James Church for private prayer have no-ticed this new smell. That is the spray that has to be put on every space after its use.
God bless all of you this week and I continue to ask for patience as we try to navigate our way through this in what, we hope, is a responsible way,
Fr. Mike

This Week’s Word
For today’s Gospel reflection, we borrow from Fr. Bill Bausch, gifted author and retired parish priest of our diocese. In setting the scene of the Upper Room where the apostles hid in fear after Jesus’ death, Fr. Bausch writes, “Into their isolation Jesus bursts. Through closed doors…past locks… oblivious of barriers he comes. He sought them out in their weakness, ignored the doors they thought would keep him out. He was there to speak of forgiveness … to give them the gift of the Spirit: The Spirit of the Second Chance, the Spirit of a love greater than their shame, a Spirit that would break down doors and send them out … to preach the Good News of God’s love. Pentecost is about the birth of a sent community – you and me – whom the breath of God has touched, a community called church, a gather-ing of people inducted through baptism, sent to open shut doors and let out sin and despair and let in the Good News. It is a formidable job we have been given, but we are not alone. In the words of St. Peter, we are a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people set apart. We are church …. All because we have the Spirit.”
www.dioceseoftrenton.org/catholicappeal We pray for the success of the Annu-al Catholic Appeal so that we may continue to build on the wonderful heritage of our Catholic faith and prepare the way of the future.

Pentecost Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
I have never won a big prize in a chance contest. Small ones, yes, but nothing really exciting such as you see from time to time on TV. But you can bet that if I ever did, I’d show it.
Those thoughts came to me after reading this weekend’s Readings. I can easily imagine the faces of the Apostles in those Pentecost scenes. Chronologically, the Gospel section happens first. It is the evening of the first Easter, and the dejected and frightened Eleven are suddenly stunned to see their Master fully alive and glowing with an enhanced appearance. Not only that they hear His familiar voice wish them peace. No scolding. No reminding them of their disap-pearance from the crucifixion scene. He even lets them see for themselves the scars left on Him from the ordeal of the crucifixion. Their eyes must have wid-ened; their brows furrowed; mouths agape; their whole bodies experiencing shock and relief at the same time. “He is alive!” they think, “and we know for sure that He was truly dead!”
Only days later, their faces again reflected fear and wonder when the wind roared and there appeared tongues of fire above their heads. But they also felt a surge of confidence within themselves. When they later started to preach, they were equally amazed to see that everyone in a mixed crowd understood what they said!
All of this sounds too good to be true as we hear about it again this Pentecost Sunday centuries later. Right now, this pandemic may have loosened our grip on optimism. Made us battered and bruised by statistics. Annoyed by face-masks and false distances from each other. Anyway, we have not experienced tongues of fire overhead or anything like it in the time since. Don’t be too sure.
Have we not at least felt a touch of that fire when we know that we have helped lead someone to embrace the faith? Have we not been happily sur-prised when a complete stranger to the faith understands what we are talking about as we explain a teaching of our Church, and see them nod in apprecia-tion? There is a certain deep joy in hearing a person suddenly acknowledging Jesus as their Lord and Savior, is there not? These are wonderful happenings not to be ignored. We’re actually watching the Holy Spirit at work.
Jesus is truly alive, and the sending of His Holy Spirit still lasts beyond our gen-eration. This current time of testing we have endured since last winter will cer-tainly produce lessons to be learned. But we will always have our own unique mission to make our risen Lord known. It’s our turn to be His Apostles for our time and place, always remembering a simple truth: that you and I can preach a better sermon with our lives than with our lips. Happy Pentecost!
Act of Spiritual Communion Prayer
My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,
come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there
and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be
separated from You. Amen.
