POPE FRANCIS—PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR MAY

Evangelization : Christians of Africa, witnesses for peace, That Christians in Africa, in imitation of the Merciful Jesus, may give prophetic witness to reconciliation, justice, and peace.

Pastor’s Corner

God is so good! I give thanks to the Father for blessing us with so much—our lives,

our health, our families, the grace to be free of sin if we ask for it; and if that weren’t

enough, he gives us His own life in the Sacraments and power through the Holy Spirit to

live courageous, joyful lives in the midst of a broken world. How truly good God is to us!

Gratitude is a habit that we develop by acknowledging the good gifts in our life.

The happiest people I know are the ones who are the most grateful: they know they don’t

deserve the many gifts they have and frequently give thanks to God for what they have,

whether it be a little or a lot. God desires our true happiness, which is one of the reasons why he commands us to

celebrate Eucharist (Thanksgiving) at least once a week—we need to practice giving thanks if we want to know real

joy!

In that vein, I wish to give thanks to the many donors we’ve had in the past months. You can see an article

in the bulletin this week with a list of the gifts given—everything from T.V.s to musical instruments, and large

financial gifts to support simultaneous translation and our ongoing security projects on campus (cameras, alarms,

rekeying, and night patrols). These gifts, along with the archdiocese security grant, there has been virtually no

need to pay for any of these projects with your offertory giving! God is truly good and there are truly generous

people here at St. Alice who believe in supporting our mission. We also had a very successful Archbishop’s appeal

this spring, and are currently at 91% of our parish goal, only $2,500 to go as of this writing. For those who already

pledged, THANK YOU. Thank you for believing in the mission of the Archdiocese of Portland, which is the mission

of bringing souls to Jesus Christ. If you haven’t sent in your pledge yet, I encourage you to partner with the local

church in this important work—check out the archdpdx.org website to see all the great things going on!

I am also grateful to our excellent administrative council who has been helping me refine the parish budget

for next year. We are almost ready to approve it and present it to you and I’m very excited. For those who have

been longtime parishioners, you may know that we have been operating at a loss financially for at least the last two

years and were projecting to do so again in our budget this current year. However, reports indicate that we are on

track to end the year with a smaller loss than expected-praise God! This is partly due to the excellent staff we have

here who do everything possible to save money and do things inexpensively or fix things themselves—they are true

stewards of the resources you give to St. Alice and I am awed by their personal dedication and generosity.

I thank God lastly for all the wonderful volunteers we have here! From greeters, to Extraordinary

Ministers of Holy Communion to the infirm, lectors, office support & IT, groundskeeping, musicians, catechists, and

charitable outreach, just to name a few! It inspires me to see people using their gifts for God. Being a baptized

disciple of Jesus is not a spectator sport—Jesus is calling YOU to participate, whether through prayer, volunteering,

or financial support—or all three! We all need to work together to fulfill the missionary mandate of our Lord: “Go

therefore and make disciples of all nations!” If you have any suggestions, questions, or just want to get involved,

please contact the parish office. I am hoping that we will be able to use the unique gifts and talents you all have to

do great things for the growth of the kingdom here in Springfield. We’ll talk more soon…

Blessings,

Fr. Mark
