And also John Reeves who fitted the electrics for us.” Councillor Christine Potts, front, raises a glass with members of St Aidan’s Church to celebrate the upgrading of the Church Hall’s kitchen. Ferryhill landlord brews special arts festival ale

Surtees Arms landlord, Alan Hogg’s latest creation is to be the official beer of the Darlington Arts Festival.Culture Vulture is a 3.8 per cent light ale which has a twist of citrus in the taste. The beer has been brewed using a mixture of pale malts and British and Slo-venian hops.

Alan and Susan Hogg, who also run the Yard of Ale Brewery connected to the Surtees Arms on Chilton Lane, brew their special beers on site.Mr Hogg said: “We’re very pleased and proud to have been asked to do this. It was quite a surprise and we’re over the moon about it.

“It’s difficult to say how much we will brew but it will only go to pubs in Dar-lington and it’ll probably end when the festival does.”Darlington Arts Festival, an annual event now in its third year, features acts at various venues round the town. This year’s event began on Monday, April 20, and runs through until the end of May.John Dean, chairman of the festival, said: “We always welcome the support which we receive for the arts festival. We hope people enjoy Culture Vulture.”The award-winning Surtees Arms has been named as the pub of the year by the Durham branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra).Culture Vulture can be ordered by contacting Mr Hogg on 07540 733513 or by emailing [email protected] more information about Darlington Arts festival, visit darlingtonforculture.org and select the festival from the menu.

School, and properties evacuated in Ferryhill drama

Ferryhill town centre was evacuated and a section of the A167 closed for two hours on Wednesday 15th April after a fire in a building containing a gas cylinders.Shoppers, workers and schoolchildren were forced to leave the area amid fears that the cylinders, one of which had begun to vent gas as it heated up might explode. The fire at Dolphion Tooling on Main Street forced the

evacuation of Dean Bank Primary School as well as local shops where cus-tomers had to abandon shopping baskets. The Dean and Chapter pub, next door to Dolphn Tooling was also evacuated.Landlord Mark Bell said: “We had about 30 people drinking but people didn’t panic. We had a private function booked which we had to cancel and lost about £500 in trade.”Shoppers were forced to

leave B&M Bargains whose store manager, Trish Maddison said: “We were quite busy but people left in an orderly manner.“We lost about £600 due to the incident but it’s just one of those things.”Due to its proximity to the incident, the fire services were also forced to close a section of the A167 for two hours.John Walkden of County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Services said: “We were called to reports that a cylinder was on fire.“We found two other cylinders nearby and so we erected a 200-metre cordon. We worked closely with the police to evacuate the town centre.“When these cylinders explode,” explained Mr Walkden, “they can travel 150 metres, so we also closed the A167.“The community was fan-tastic and very helpful.”

Ferryhill town centre was evacuated last Wednesday after a fire in a building contain-ing cylinders which threatened to explode.

Dear Editor,

In response to the letter in last weeks chapter regarding dog fouling, I do not have a dog myself, however the designated play area for children at the bottom of Wood Lane is being used by a mindless few who have little regard for children and thier safety regarding dog faeces.

Wood Lane is surrounded by grassed areas and woodland so why use a childrens play area?

Please try to consider others and use appropriate areas pick up and look after the area where we live. It’s not difficult.

Yours sincerely,Name and address supplied.

Dear Editor,

Staff and residents of Denehurst Care Home would like to say a big thank you to all who attended our Easter Egg Hunt.

We raised a huge £288 which has enabled us to buy a barbeque set for the residents, so thank you all so much.

Yours sincerely,Sharon Williams.

Dear Editor,

Regarding your article in last week’s Chapter (issue 722) with respect to Ferryhill Town Council’s decision to pass an amendment on the A167 lighting issue, could I take this opportunity to clarify the meeting’s proceedings.

FAIR councillors, Melvin Brown and Brian Gibson, submitted a motion calling upon “Durham County Council to release sufficient funding to retain lighting on the A167”.

However, Labour members of the council would not support this motion and tabled an amendment which added the condition that “If this is not possible then in the event of any serious or fatal accidents on the unlit stretches [Durham County Council] takes full responsibility and immediately reinstate the lighting.”

It was this amendment that FAIR councillors voted against because FAIR wished to pass the original motion calling on funding to be released. FAIR councillors wanted Durham County Council to pay for the lighting, not to have an opt out, as the Labour amendment offered. However, as the amendment was passed, the original motion was overruled. Yours sincerely,Mrs Margaret Seymour, Ferryhill Town Council.

Nana, Nana, why does Grandad shout out in the night?

Why do I hear him cry when the lights are out?

Hush my child, go to sleep,

There are things Grandad did in the War.

They haunt him in his sleep, as she slowly shut the door.

I woke bright and early and sat on Grandad’s knee,

He looked into my eyes and with these words he said to me,

I’m sorry child, for waking you, but these things I have done,

I have made many a woman a widow or mother lose a son.

I went to war a young man with love and joy in my heart,

But when so many of your friends are killed, it darkens your heart.

Take a walk with me child, there’s something you must see.

He took me to Chilton Cenotaph and sat me back on his knee.

Look at all the names child, they are lads who died in the War,

Good friends of mine who I’ll see no more.

But if you look closely you will see a name as yours,

That’s my brother child, his name will live once more.

Several cases due at courtThe following matters were due before magistrates at Newton Aycliffe recently. Natasha Dent, aged 28, of Grasmere Road, Ferryhill, faces a charge of shop theft. Cup final agony for Celtic

Enter CIC costumes available for professional and party hire

The heavy schedule of matches finally caught up with Ferryhill Celtic last week when they were easily defeated 4-1 by higher league opposition in the Cup Winners Cup final.Pelton ROAB, who play in the Swinburn Maddision Premier League - a full three divisions above the Ferryhill side - took a four goal lead before Celtic scored a consolation goal in the final fifteen minutes. However it was no conso-lation to a disappointed Celtic to see the cup go to the Premier League side, although they can be rightly proud of their achievement to reach the final from the lower leagues.“Full credit to Pelton ROAB,” said a spokesper-son for Celtic, “they were excellent on the night. We also still have a lot to play for with six league games to go and another cup final in three weeks time.

Celtic bounced back from the cup disappointment with a 13 - 1 mauling of Esh Winning Cricket Club in the league. Andrew Agar notched five goals while Luke Thompson and Shane Todd helped themselves to a hat trick each. Liam Taylor and Brett Maughan scored the others. The win lifts Celtic to third place in the league on 38 points after 17 games. While they have several games in hand over Pelton Crown, the league leaders, who only need a point from their final two games to secure the championship look unlikely to be caught. Washington Cricket Club sit in second place having played all their games and Celtic’s target will be to pip them to second in the league. Celtic need six points from their final five games to guarantee second spot after an adventurous campaign.
