The World Day of Prayer is an international ecu-menical Christian laywomen's initiative. It is run under the motto “Informed Prayer and Prayerful Action,” and is celebrated annually in over 170 countries on the first Friday in March. The movement aims to bring together women of various races, cultures, and traditions in a yearly common Day of Prayer, as well as in closer fel-lowship, understanding, and action throughout the year. Through the World Day of Prayer, women are en-couraged to become aware of the other countries and cultures and no longer live in isolation. They are also encouraged take up the burdens of other people, to sympathize with the problems of other countries and cultures, and pray with and for them. They are further encouraged to become aware of their talents and use them in the service of society. The World Day of Pray-er aims to demonstrate that prayer and action are in-separable and that both have immeasurable influence in the world. The text "World Day of Prayer" is from www.cute-calendar.com

Greetings! I trust you are having a most
blessed Lent. I remember back
in seminary, one of my more en-
thusiastic colleagues decided he
was going to give up sweets, al-
cohol, and meat for all of Lent. And he was at
least a touch proud of his grand plans of devo-
tion. On Ash Wednesday, the campus refectory
served hot cross buns in the afternoon for us to
break our fast. (It is traditional, in some plac-
es, to completely fast until the afternoon on
Ash Wednesday). I strolled in shortly after
three o’clock to see my dear friend sitting at a
table, the remnants of, no exaggeration, half a
dozen hot cross buns on the table in front of
him, frosting crumbs dangling from his lips
and his beard. “Oh,” I remarked, a bit snidely.
“How is that Lenten fast going?” And the color
drained from his face as he looked down in hor-
ror at his plate. “Oh no!” he exclaimed, “What
have I done!” “Well,” I replied, “seems like a
good opportunity for more repentance.* Good
thing it is Lent!”
*To be clear, one does not need to repent if
he/she breaks the Lenten fast. Falling short of
a voluntary rule of life, temporary or other-
wise, is not a sin.
Wherever you are in your Lenten discipline
– whether it lasted 5 days, 5 minutes, or if you
are going to make it all 5 weeks, I want to en-
courage you to keep at it. Not for the sake of
earning merit or even for the fruit of discipline
that God may grow in you through it. But
simply because being with Jesus is worth it,
and that is what these disciplines are all about
– making room for Jesus.
And as we move to Holy Week, I also want
to encourage you to make room to be with Je-
sus at our services of Palm Sunday, Maundy
Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and
Easter Sunday. You will find service times and
details in this issue. [page 2] Walking with Je-
sus, being with him every step of the way, will
grow in us the faith that he is with us, by his
Spirit, every step of our lives as well.
All my best,
Fr. Lars

Parish Profile
Sandy Koeller, member of the Bishop’s
Committee and ten year member of St. Aidan’s, took a circuitous route to get here! She was born in Glendale, CA to the widow of a decorated WWII Army Air Corps pilot. Working at Edwards Air Base, she was the pri-vate secretary of an aviation pioneer, Col. John Paul Stapp, who became known as “the fastest man on earth” and is credited with creating Stapp’s Law: “The universal aptitude of ineptitude makes any human ac-complishment an incredible miracle.” He was also the final author of Murphy’s Law: “Anything that can go wrong will go wrong.” Sandy’s mother met a test pilot at Edwards and they were married when Sandy was four. As moving is part of the military, they spent time in Texas and Arizona before returning to California. Her mother and father eventually moved to Washing-ton, D.C. where he was director of the Bureau of Air Transportation Safety. He also became a TV pundit. Whenever there was a significant air disaster in the world Sandy says, “My dad appeared on at least one network news program. Anyone who watched Ted Koppel’s news in the ‘70’s has seen my dad. I’m sure!” Meanwhile, Sandy attended the University of Southern California and met Peter Koeller — the rest is a forty-seven year history! She and Peter raised three children, Erika, Christo-pher, and Matthew, who live in the mid-west, but per-haps not close enough. Erika, of Chippewa Falls, has Sandy’s only grandchild, Emily, who is getting married this year. Her sons live in Indianapolis and Beloit. Sandy and Peter were members of St. James in West Bend, where Peter helped establish their Satur-day lunch program. They found their way to St. Ai-dan’s through Fr. Mike Tess. Peter served St. Aidan’s as a deacon and initiated the Community Lunch here as well. His untimely death three years ago is still deeply felt by all who knew him in both parishes. In addition to many church activities through the years, Sandy worked as a clerk at the West Bend Li-brary. However, she once had a more exciting job — selling tickets at Disneyland, where she saw a few ce-lebrities up close, including Gene Kelly who looked fabulous, and Kim Novak, who didn’t. Sandy and Peter traveled internationally [Mexico, Puerto Rico, England, Scotland, Wales, Italy, France, Belgium] and, now retired, she would like to see more of the U.S. and Europe. At home she enjoys music, art museums, knitting, crosswords, and computer games. We appreciate Sandy’s lively style and continued support of St. Aidan’s through her presence and ser-vice on the Bishop’s Committee.
Melodie and Jeremy Meigs’ baby, Ash Jeremy, was born January 24 [6 lbs., 14 oz.] His proud grand-parents are Ann Marsh-Meigs and Eric Meigs.

During Lent, we will continue to talk about the many ways to
prepare ourselves, either by purposely giving up something or by being intentional in an activity. We have many activities to help us prepare for Easter, including making our prayer eggs to hang on the tree. All the children will be working on the Easter Ban-ner, which will be displayed on Palm Sunday and again throughout the Easter Season. You can help us with our banner this year by providing us with a trac-ing of your hand on white paper. You know the saying – many hands make light work?. We need many “hands” to help us complete our project. Please drop off your tracing in the Worship Center. Please note the slight change in the Sunday school schedule. All activities begin at 9:30am: Sunday, Feb 25 – Sunday School - All Classes Sunday, Mar 4 – Project Day – Social Hall Sunday, Mar 11 – Sunday School – All Classes Sunday, Mar 18 – Project Day – Social Hall Sunday, Mar 25 – Palm Sunday Puppet Show The Dressing of the Puppets for the Annual Palm Sunday Puppet show is Saturday, March 24 from 10am to 1:30 pm. We will dress puppets, as-semble sets, eat pizza, and have rehearsal after-wards. If you want to help, please see Sandi Lenz.

Alice’s Restaurant Are you ready for a weather change? I am. The seed catalogs have ar-
rived, and I am already planning the summer garden. My overwintering geraniums have re-covered from their severe fall haircuts and are looking bright with the first flush of red flowers starting to open. This year there will be only the basic vegetables. I have finally figured out that no matter how I disguise eggplant Bruce is go-ing to fish it off his plate and put it on mine. Why bother to plant it? I’ll just buy mine at the farmer’s market.
The garden in my mind is always lush and green with no nasty bugs and no weeds. Right, sort of like the way I start Lent with a vision of no chocolate or regular morning prayer and a rak-ishly tilted halo over my head. Yeah. Not likely to happen. It takes real work to get that lush gar-den or a good Lent, and it is easy put off water-ing until tomorrow or get distracted from my good intentions. I guess, like the seed cata-logues that come in January, it’s a reminder to set my goals realistically and do better than last year. I wish you well on your Lent.
With the snow still on the ground, here is a good warm soup recipe to get you through the last of the winter weather, with or without meat as your Lent decrees.
Lemony (Chicken) Orzo Soup 1 C chopped onion 1 C chopped celery 1 C chopped carrot 2 T. oil 2 minced garlic cloves 1/3 C orzo or other small pasta 1 t. Italian herbs 6 to 8 C. water 2 t. chicken or veggie bouillon 3 C. chopped chicken salt and pepper large handful of fresh spinach, chopped juice of one lemon, lemon zest Heat the oil in the soup pot and stir the chopped veg-etables and garlic until the onion is translucent. Add the spices, boullion, chicken, orzo and the water and simmer for 20 to 30 minutes. Taste for seasoning with salt and pepper and add the spinach and lemon and zest. Bring up to a boil and serve immediately.
