AROUND THE ACC

GAME 2 • SYRACUSE VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

@CUSEFOOTBALL • ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

FASTER• The Orange returned to its blistering pace on off ense in the opening contest of the 2017 season. Syracuse ran 93 plays for 586 yards of total off ense in a 50-7 victory against Central Connec cut State. • The team’s 93 off ensive snaps against Central Connec cut State ranks 10th in program single-game history. Five of the 13 highest play counts at Syracuse have come during head coach Dino Babers’ tenure.• Since Babers’ arrival in 2016, Syracuse has run at least 90 plays in a game on fi ve occasions. The Orange owns a 2-3 overall record in such instances, defea ng Central Connec cut State and Virginia Tech, while suff ering losses to Louisville, Pi sburgh and USF.• For the sixth me under Babers, Syracuse eclipsed the 500-yard mark in total off ense. The Orange touts a 4-2 overall mark when reaching that plateau, bea ng Boston College, Central Connec cut State, Colgate, and Virginia Tech, while losing to Pi sburgh and USF.

THE SYSTEM WORKS• Known for his innova ve, ultra-fast off ense, head coach Dino Babers planted the seeds of Syracuse’s revival in 2016 and the program immediately began reaping the rewards. He commanded an off ense that set or ed more than 40 school records, including new program season records for passing a empts (522), pass

comple ons (332) and passing yards (3,855). In addi on, Syracuse racked up 5,290 yards of off ense, the second-highest total in school history.• In his fi ve full seasons as a head coach (2012-16), Babers’ off enses generated 32,910 total yards in 66 contests. That is the equivalent of 18.7 miles!• In three of those years, Babers’ unit ranked in the top 10 na onally in total off ense, including 2013 when his Eastern Illinois squad led all of Division I (FBS and FCS) with 8,253 yards. The only Division I team to average more yards per game than EIU’s 589.5 in 2013 was Baylor (618.8).

ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST• Head coach Dino Babers brought his high-octane off ensive scheme to Syracuse when he was named the program’s head coach in December 2015 and the Orange experienced an immediate jump in tempo.• In 2016, Syracuse ran 971 off ensive plays, averaging 80.9 snaps per game. By comparison, the Orange totaled 751 off ensive snaps and averaged 62.6 plays per game in 2015.• Syracuse set the ACC single-game record for most plays in its 2016 season fi nale at Pi sburgh. The Orange ran 106 plays (45 rushing, 61 passing) for 668 yards (6.3 avg). The total surpassed the previous conference standard established by Maryland in 1992 against NC State.• Of the four highest play counts in school history, three came in 2016 (Pi sburgh – 106, USF – 105, Virginia Tech – 100).

NOT JUST QUANTITY• Syracuse accumulated 3,855 yards through the air in 2016, a single-season program record. To add to that accomplishment, the Orange was accurate as well, recording a .636 comple on percentage, which ranks second in school history. • The team got off on the right foot last year, se ng a Syracuse single-game record by comple ng 87 percent of its passes in the opener against Colgate. It surpassed the previous high, which was set when the Orange completed 16-of-19 throws against Army in 1996.• Syracuse completed 32-of-38 pass a empts at Boston College, connec ng on more than 84 percent of its passes. It marked the Orange’s best performance in an ACC game and ed for second overall in program history.• According to ESPN.com’s David Hale, quarterback Eric Dungey was among the most effi cient from beyond the line of scrimmage in 2016. Dungey ranked second among Power-Five quarterbacks in comple on percentage beyond the line of scrimmage, hi ng on more than 64 percent of his throws. Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfi eld led the na on with a 65 percent comple on percentage.• Dungey is already back to his accurate ways, comple ng his fi rst 13 passes of the year against Central Connec cut State. It marked the second straight season he hit on 13 straight throws to begin a camptain. The third-year signal caller fi nished 28-of-36 for 328 yards and three touchdowns against the Blue Devils.

GAME 2 • SYRACUSE VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

@CUSEFOOTBALL • ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

DYNAMIC DUO• Syracuse is the only ACC team with two players who have 100+ career recep ons (Ervin Philips – 140, Steve Ishmael – 126). Philips ranks second on the program’s ledger for career recep ons, while Ishmael is ninth on the list. Alec Lemon holds the Syracuse record, hauling in 201 recep ons from 2009-12.• Philips is one of three players in Orange football history to collect at least 1,000 career receiving yards and rush for at least 400 yards on the ground. In his fi rst three seasons, Philips has registered 1,165 receiving yards and 446 rushing yards. Art Monk notched 1,644 receiving yards and 1,150 rushing yards from 1976-79, while Qadry Ismail tallied 1,318 receiving yards and 433 rushing yards from 1989-92.• Following his 12-catch, 134-receiving yard eff ort against Central Connec cut State, Ishmael moved into ninth place on the program’s all- me receiving list with 1,678 yards in his career. Pro Football Hall of Famer Marvin Harrison holds the Orange record, accumula ng 2,728 yards from 1992-95.• Last season, Syracuse was the only FBS school in the country to feature two players with 90+ recep ons, as Amba E a-Tawo recorded a school-record 94 catches and Philips had 90. Their 184 recep ons were the most by a receiving tandem in the history of the Atlan c Coast Conference. The previous mark was held by Duke’s Conor Vernon (85) and Jamison Crowder (76), who combined for 161 catches in 2012.

EXPERIENCED PRODUCTION• Syracuse is one of the most experienced teams in the country with 20 players on the roster who started at least six games a year ago. The Orange bring back almost 95 percent of its total off ensive yardage and 90 percent of its ground produc on.• Quarterback Eric Dungey is one of the na on’s top returning passers. Dungey passed for 297.7 yards per game as a sophomore in 2016, which ranks seventh na onally among returners. Washington State quarterback Luke Falk leads all returners a er averaging 343.7 yards per contest.• Similar to Dungey, Ervin Philips is one of the na on’s top returning pass catches, earning a spot on the 2017 Biletnikoff Award Watch List in July. Philips averaged 7.5 recep ons per contest in 2016, which ranks third among returning players in the country. Houston wide receiver Linell Bonner leads all returners a er averaging 8.2 catches per ou ng a year ago.

IMPROVING GROUND GAME• Running backs coach/special teams coordinator Jus n Lus g is one of two new assistants in the midst of their fi rst season with the Orange. He came on board in March a er a stellar season as the head coach at Edinboro University (Pa.) and immediately began the process of improving an SU ground game that generated 119.6 yards a contest in 2016.• Junior Dontae Strickland ascended to the top of the depth chart at running back in 2016 and is in his second season as SU’s primary ball carrier. He led the Orange in rushing with 566 yards on 162 carries (3.5 avg.) and logged fi ve games with 50+ rushing yards last season, including a career-best 127 yards on 30 carries versus USF. Strickland also demonstrated his versa lity, throwing an 84-yard touchdown pass in SU’s victory against Virginia Tech.• A er dabbling at inside receiver during the spring, sophomore Moe Neal is charted as Strickland’s backfi eld backup. Neal was SU’s second-leading rusher as a freshman. He scored a 49-yard touchdown on his fi rst career carry and is a threat to go the distance whenever he touches the ball.

HOW FAST ARE THE ORANGE?

GAME 2 • SYRACUSE VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

@CUSEFOOTBALL • ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

DEFENSE SMOTHERS CCSU• Coordinator Brian Ward’s unit was eager to erase the memory of last year’s fi nale in which it surrendered 76 points and 644 yards to Pi sburgh and did so by limi ng CCSU to 167 total yards (113 passing, 54 rushing). CCSU’s longest run was a 9-yard gain on third-and-10 in the second quarter and the Blue Devils managed just 1.8 yards a carry on 30 rushing a empts. • Collec vely, the Syracuse defense forced the Blue Devils to punt 12 mes, one short of the Orange opponent record (13 by Holy Cross in 1968), and posted 12 three-and-outs on 16 CCSU possessions. The Orange limited Central Connec cut State to just eight fi rst downs in the game, the fewest ever against a Dino Babers-coached team. The Blue Devils were 1-for-15 on third down, including 0-of-8 to start the game.• Perhaps more impressively, Syracuse did not allow the Blue Devils to enter the red zone the en re game. In fact, CCSU only crossed the 50-yard line twice on drives that started in its own territory. The only points for the Blue Devils came on a 24-yard TD pass from Jake Dolegala to Jose Garcia at the 11:15 make in the third quarter. Following the touchdown, the Orange forced fi ve consecu ve punts and a turnover on CCSU’s next six possessions.

TACKLING TANDEM• Linebackers Parris Benne and Zaire Franklin each eclipsed the 100-tackle mark a year ago. Benne tallied a team-best 110 stops, while Franklin made 101. It marked the fi rst me mul ple Orange defenders notched 100 tackles since 2003.• Benne became the fi rst Syracuse to player to break the 100-tackle mark since Derrell Smith notched 114 stops in 2010. Benne ranked third in the ACC and 30th na onally in tackles per game (9.2). His best eff ort came against Notre Dame last season when he tallied 17 stops, the most by an Orange player since Jerry Mackey had 17 tackles at Virginia in 2004.• Franklin earned 2016 All-ACC accolades from both the coaches and media. He paced the club with 10 tackles for loss and ranked sixth in the conference a er notching 8.4 tackles per ou ng. Benne was an All-ACC Honorable Men on choice by the media who cover the league.

GRADUATE TRANSFER TRIO• Last season, wide receiver Amba E a-Tawo was the Orange’s star graduate transfer, authoring the most prolifi c receiving season in team history in his one year on campus. • This year, Syracuse added three graduate transfers, all on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive backs Devin M. Butler, Jordan Mar n and linebacker Aus n Valdez joined the Orange for the 2017 campaign. All three are contributors and have ascended to at least second on the depth chart at their respec ve posi ons.• Butler played in 37 games for Notre Dame from 2013-16, notching 39 tackles, seven passes defended, and one intercep on. Mar n saw ac on in 34 contests for Toledo the past four years, recording 74 tackles and 11 pass breakups. A 2015 All-MAC First Team selec on, Valdez logged 222 tackles in 37 games played at Bowling Green from 2014-16.

DEFENSE INTO OFFENSE• Last season, cornerback Cordell Hudson returned an intercep on 22 yards for a touchdown at Connec cut. It marked the third straight year that at least one Syracuse defender recorded a pick-six.• In the past 36 games, the Orange have tallied nine defensive touchdowns.

VETERAN SPECIALISTS• New special teams coordinator Jus n Lus g inherited a veteran group of specialists when he came on board in March. Placekicker Cole Murphy is in his fourth season. Long snapper Ma Keller is in his third and punter Sterling Hofrichter is in his second.• Murphy is among the top 10 in Syracuse history in most kicking categories. He also has three career fi eld goals of 50+ yards to his credit.• Keller contributed to an Orange pun ng opera on that was fi h in the ACC in 2016 in net average (38.8) and third in total pun ng yardage (3,380).• The benefi ciary of Keller’s pinpoint snaps is Hofrichter, who earned Freshman All-America and All-ACC honors a year ago. Hofrichter ed for second among freshmen na onally in pun ng average (42.7) and matched Virginia’s Nicholas Conte for the conference lead with 23 punts of 50+ yards. In addi on to his pun ng responsibili es, Hofrichter worked in with Murphy on placement kicks during preseason camp and hit the fi rst fi eld goal of his career in the Central Connec cut State game.

GAME 2 • SYRACUSE VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE • SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

@CUSEFOOTBALL • ORANGE IS THE NEW FAST

DEGREE IN HAND• Eight members of the 2017 Syracuse football team have already earned their undergraduate degrees: Sean Avant, Devin M. Butler, Adly Enoicy, Alex Grossman, Cordell Hudson, Zack Mahoney, Jordan Mar n and Aus n Valdez.• The Orange rank third in the ACC and 26th na onally with eight graduates on its 2017 roster. Northwestern paces the country with 18.

RISING FAST• One of the brightest, young off ensive coaches in the country, Sean Lewis completed his fi rst year as Syracuse’s co-off ensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2016. He was named to the post in January 2016 a er he helped run one of the most explosive off enses in college football under head coach Dino Babers at Bowling Green.• Lewis’ coaching peers have taken note of his success. Lewis was a nominee for the 2015 Frank Broyles Award as the na on’s top assistant coach. He also was selected for the fi rst AFCA 30 Under 30 Leadership Ins tute.

COUGHLIN TO RECEIVE 2017 ARENTS AWARD• Orange football le erwinner and two- me Super Bowl-winning head coach Tom Coughlin will be honored by the Syracuse University Alumni Associa on with the 2017 Arents Award at a ceremony on campus Friday, Oct.6. The Arents Award is the highest alumni honor bestowed by the University.• The Arents Award is named a er George Arents, a successful manufacturer who served on the University Board of Trustees from 1930 un l his death in 1960. Coughlin joins Daniel D’Aniello, Diane Nelson and Mary Spio as recipients of this year’s award for excellence and innova on in their chosen fi elds.• Coughlin is the execu ve vice president of football opera ons for the NFL’s Jacksonville Jaguars where he oversees the day-to-day football opera ons of the franchise. His decorated NFL career spans 29 years, including 20 seasons as a head coach.• A three-year le erwinner for Hall of Fame Orange head coach Ben Schwartzwalder, Coughlin suited up alongside future College and Pro football Hall of Famers Larry Csonka and Floyd Li le in the Syracuse backfi eld. During his senior season of 1967, Coughlin led SU in both recep ons and receiving yardage as the Orange compiled an 8-2 record and fi nished 12th in the fi nal United Press Interna onal (UPI) poll.

J. MICHAEL ANDERSON TO RECEIVE 2017 ZUNIC AWARD• Former Orange off ensive lineman J. Michael Anderson ‘77 has been named the 2017 recipient of the Zunic Award. Anderson will be honored Friday, Sept. 8 during a dinner at Timber Banks Golf Club in Baldwinsville and recognized on the fi eld when Syracuse hosts Middle Tennessee Saturday, Sept. 9 at the Carrier Dome.• A self-employed furniture salesman, Anderson and his wife of 41 years, Flo, have demonstrated extraordinary courage in the wake of personal tragedy. Their two oldest sons, Jimmy and Eric, died suddenly in their sleep 16 years apart.• Despite the loss of two of their three sons, the couple persevered and found ways to make a diff erence in the community. Anderson served as a youth basketball coach for more than two decades at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Liverpool. He also coached baseball in the Salt City Li le League for 10 years. In addi on, the Andersons are frequent holiday volunteers at the Syracuse Rescue Mission, serving meals to those less fortunate, and are ac ve par cipants in the Liverpool Central School District “Dollars for Scholars” program where they’ve established a scholarship in Jimmy’s name.• An off ensive lineman at SU for two seasons, Anderson was a member of legendary head coach Ben Schwartzwalder’s last team in 1973 and played for Schwartzwalder’s successor, Frank Maloney, in 1974.• Presented by the Syracuse Football Club, the Zunic Award was created in 2001 to honor Mike and Judy Zunic, who died tragically on July 18, 1989 when a United Airlines plane crashed in Sioux City, Iowa. The pilot, an cipa ng landing diffi cul es, requested if some strong passengers would volunteer to give up their seats and sit at the exit doors to assist passengers in the event of an emergency. Mike and Judy gave up their seats in fi rst class to sit at one of the doors. They both died in the crash and those in the Zunics’ original seats survived.

Since the NCAA ins tuted its current over me rule in 1996, Syracuse owns a 9-7 (.563) overall record in over me.
