• AFL – One of the most important labor unions in U.S. History– Worked for “Bread and Butter” issues – higher wages, safer

working conditions, 40 hour work week– One of the biggest unions ever – joined Congress of Industrial

workers to form AFL-CIO

• Samuel Gompers– One of the first leaders of the AFL– His popularity and success helped AFL grow in numbers– Stayed away for politics and concentrated on worker rights
