Advent Candlelight Evening
December 15th
Come away from the busyness and noise of the world for an Advent Candlelight Evening of Music, Readings and Reflections. Join with the St Mary's Community on Friday evening, December 15th at 7:30 pm as we enter into the peaceful and quiet anticipation of the coming of our Lord and Savior. Wine and cheese, appetizers and soft drinks will be served immediately following in the St. Joseph's Room.
St. Mary's Adopt-A-Family Program: As we look forward to the coming holiday season and to celebrating a joyous Christmas, we also keep in mind those less fortunate. There are always many families that are facing hardship this season. Some are families with small children, some are elderly and having a difficult time paying for medications and food. We can help by "adopting" a family and providing a Christmas meal and a few small gifts to make Christmas a little bit brighter for these families.
The Community Center of Northern Westchester refers their neediest families to us. All are local families. You can choose to adopt a family for Christmas, or make a contribution to the program. No amount is too small!
For more information, please contact Roanne at: 914-715-5542 or [email protected] or Janine at [email protected] or 914-439-4663. The deadline for adopting a family is November 30 but contributions to the program can be accepted up until December 8th.
RECONCILIATION MONDAY ADVENT CONFESSIONS DECEMBER 18th, 4-8 pm
Mass Prayers on Missal Cover Please look at the inside of front cover of our latest missals. We are happy to say that for the first time, the missal company has printed the Gloria, the Creed and other prayers here for easy reference.
FYI Maintenance Update
This past week, the exterior of St. Mary’s Church has been professionally cleaned.
New covers have been purchased and put on all our Missals/Music issue books in the church pews.
Scripture Corner:
FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
First Reading: Isaiah 63:16b-17, 19b, 64:2-7 In this straightforward psalm, the people acknowledge their sinful ways, yet plead that their Creator might reveal himself to them. They ask God to remember, not their sins, but that “We are all the work of your hands.”
Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:3-9 Paul explains to the Corinthians that they are spe-cially favored by God who has sent his only Son to them. He reminds us all that it was through God’s grace that we have been called to kinship with Christ.
Gospel: Mark 13:33-37 Just as a servant watching over the master’s house does not know when he will return, we do not know the hour of the Second Coming. Mark reminds us of the warning from Jesus to always be on guard, for we know not the day nor the hour.
Religious Education 10th Annual Dinner on the Run
On Monday, December 11, Mrs. D’Ambrosio’s
4th grade Religious Education class will be hosting
its “Dinner on the Run” fundraiser from 5:15-6:00
pm. All proceeds will go to support an Adopt a
Family for Christmas. For those of you picking up
children from the Religious Ed. session, plan to stay
and have dinner in the St. Mary’s school cafeteria
where the 4th graders will serve you restaurant style.
Anyone is welcome to attend! For more
information, please call Colleen at 914 522-7268 or
email @[email protected].

FYI: Readings and the Liturgical Year
Sunday Readings Today, Sunday December 3rd, the is the first Sunday of our new Liturgical Year. Our cycle of readings for Sunday Mass changes today—the First Sunday of Advent. Sunday readings are on a 3 year cycle, labeled Year A, B, & C. For Advent we will be starting Liturgical Year B, which emphasizes the Gospel of Mark. The first reading, which is usually from the Old Testament, reflects important themes from that day's Gospel. The second reading is usually from one of the epistles, a letter written to an early Church community.
Weekday Readings The first reading of the weekday Masses are on a two year cycle, Year I and Year II. Year II is read in even numbered years, so for 2018 we will be using Year II. The Gospels remain the same for both years.

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.
In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks
on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
