SST CCI Update
FM | ECSAT | 08/02/2019 | Slide 2
SST CCI v2.0 and v2.1 Generated and Available
• Climate data record of SST from 1981 to 2016• Integrated across L2, L3 and L4• Routinely funded for extension within C3S (“seamless” data 2017 onwards)• Improved ATSR-record SST results (“lynch pin”)• Significant progress towards strengthening recent decades’ CDR with PMW
• Better feature resolution in L4 product• Successful first attempt at “the 1980s”, and understanding of the significant
challenges we face in continuing to improve that period
• V2.0 soon in ODP, v2.1 to follow (contact us for early access)

Climatology (1982 – 2010)
Nearly the current standard climatology window
FM | ECSAT | 08/02/2019 | Slide 6
Seasonal cycle (1982 – 2010)
Main new feature of v2.1 is that SST anomaly is provided with respect to this climatology

Global SST anomaly timeseries
Inter-annual andtrend look good
Monthly variabilitytoo high prior to ATSR1:Related to AVHRRcalibration fluctuations

ENSO signal
ENSO signal looks very good
ENSO peak in 1982 istoo highby ~0.4 K (a “bad month”)

Experimental PMW SST CDR
New resultson PMW SSTlook promisingfor complementingIR-based record
More uncertain, poorer resolution,but beneficialcoverage

Improved feature resolution in level 4
• New flow-dependence of weight of observations relative to background

Future Developments
NEW R&D on SST ECV• Will commence in July 2019• Version 3 target date: summer 2021
• Meanwhile, C3S generation ongoing using v2.0 processor• Currently ~6 months behind present
• Objectives for v3.0 relative to v2.1• Develop means to include more 1980s sensors
• “dilute” errors and improve stability• Using Metop and SLSTR series, R&D to extend CDR to 2020• Inclusion of PMW SST, harmonized to IR SST for stability (TBC)
