4. Chuck & Caroline Baumunk’s daughter-in-law CARRIECARRIECARRIECARRIE is not doing very well. Please pray for God’s leading in decisions to be made by family and doctors regarding her treatment. 10/31

been kicked out of where he was living and has come home. His mother is unable to deal with the pressure of his lifestyle and his living in their home again. Please pray for healing for all of the members of the family. Pray for peace and wisdom of the parents. Pray that Ryan will have the strength and desire to give up his addictions. 10/15

This caused her fibromyalgia to act up. She is having so much pain that she is unable to sleep at night. Pray that the pain will cease and she will be able to get some rest. TimTimTimTim is doing better but will need to wear the boot for another several weeks. Pray for encouragement for them and complete healing for both of them. 11/6

He has been moved to another prison which is worse than the one he has been in. His Iranian family were finally able to see him. He is still not receiving meds for internal problems that he received from the beatings at the other prison. “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and

we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” I

Timothy 6:6-8

Rory Ervine had great stories about the African war, being a bush pilot, tracking game, and

playing professional cricket. As we settled with our rooibos tea under his thatched veranda in

Zimbabwe, he launched into one of his best sagas.

“Judy and I had to make a tough decision. We were farming tobacco, but felt the Lord

convicting us to stop contributing to cancer. The banks would not loan money for anything

except growing tobacco.” Rory ran his hand up his tan forehead and through sand colored hair.

“When we obeyed the Lord, we lost the farm. But God protected us, because right after that, the

government confiscated white-owned land.”

Judy added, “We sold the farm before it was forced out of our hands for nothing, and the

Lord replaced it with this ministry.” She swept her arms to include the orphanage, the sustaining

farm that Rory managed, and the clinic she headed as a nurse.

Many thousands of whites left their homesteads in bitterness, but, to the Ervines, letting the

farm go was part of God’s plan to protect their hearts.

Rory and Judy made me see that voluntarily giving up what we can have is the same as

finding contentment with what we cannot have. In both cases, we get our affections off material

blessings and onto Jesus.

To occupy myself with toys, possessions, and comforts is to stop climbing toward God and

stay on my plateau. I confess I spent considerable time resting there. However, the grand life in

Christ is higher up.

Now I’m pushing manmade treasures off the edge by simplifying what I own. If I have

material distractions around, I will be tempted to climb back down to the plateau, and I really

want to live up where Rory and Judy are.

Prayer: “Holy Spirit, help me push out the debris.”
