One of the attractions of Doune hillclimb is the quality

cars which are not even competing, like this trio of AC

CALDER FAMILY 1-2 IN BRITISH

SPRINT CHAMPIONSHIP

Although they missed the final round at Anglesey on 5th Octo-

ber, Colin Calder retained the SBD Motorsport British Sprint

Championship and his elder daughter Heather secured the

runner-up spot. These were well-earned successes as the

team had to transport their 3.5 litre Gould GR55 all the way

from the north coast of Scotland to tracks as far away as

South Wales, Norfolk, Anglesey, Wiltshire, Yorkshire and

Northern Ireland.

This continues the recent dominance of the series by Scottish

drivers since Roy Dawson won in 2006. Other than Jock Gray

coming close in 1991 when he was third and being runner-up

on the two ensuing campaigns, Scottish competitors had

never featured strongly in National rounds until the new Mil-

lennium, although Jock still holds the record for the Brighton

Speed Trials quarter mile and half-mile courses having won

Britain’s oldest speed event three times between 1991 and

1993.

Stewart Robb Junior brought the title north in 2008 and three

years later his father, also Stewart did likewise then retained it

in 2012. In 2013 Colin became the fifth Scot to win the Cham-

pionship and his current success means the Championship

trophy has been in Scottish hands for six of the last nine

years.

~~~~~~~~
Our next issue will list final results of all the speed champion-
ships of interest to Scottish competitors and a provisional list
of 2015 dates.
Could we ask registrars of all championships to let us have a
copy of their regulations, even in draft form by 25th January to
let us prepare our pre-season edition.
MORAN BECOMES CHAMPION AT SUNNY DOUNE
With the Guyson Scottish Hillclimb championship having been tied up by Ross Napier at Fintray the importance of the second National Doune meeting of 2014 was to see if Trevor Willis could prevent Scott Moran winning the Avon Tyres British Hillclimb title. It took until only the first of the run-offs to settle that score, Scott winning with the Fastest Time of the day and Trevor having to settle for fourth place behind an impressive Will Hall and the mercurial Jos Goodyear in the amazing GWR Raptor.
Even though he didn’t need to stretch himself Scott was only 0.22 of a second slower on the second set of run-offs but was beaten by Jos Goodyear by 0.18 of a second. Willis was third and Hall fourth, with only 0.52 of a second covering all four.
Scottish hopes received early setbacks with Ross Napier retiring in practice and Wallace Menzies crashing out at the approach to East Brae on his first Championship run
Other Scots did us proud, George Coghill Jr, Les Mutch and Steve Marr all scoring points in the Na-tional championship. Garry Dickson was also fast enough to qualify for the lunchtime run-off but was not registered for the Championship.
To lower the longer-established records at Doune takes considerable talent but some new targets were set, by Donald McCaskill, Will Hall and Robert Bremner, while Craig Nicol missed his goal by 0.06 and Jos Goodyear by 0.10.
This was Doune at its best, beautiful weather, lovely setting, fast times and even an early finish to the meeting. A few more of the top English competitors would have further enhanced the spectacle, but those who did come were out of the top drawer.
As usual the Paddock, even the car park was full of interesting vehicles, including a few pristine Cobras and a GT40. The good weather brought out specta-tors in big numbers and it was a pity we did not have a home driver among the leading group to give them something to shout about.
The Scottish speed season ended on a high note as ADMC held their second doubleheader of the year at Boyndie. The club were blessed with good weather which contrib-uted to a fine weekend of sport.
The main incident of the meeting was a heavy accident on Sunday practice when Colin Tullis badly damaged his MNR Vortx for the send time this year. While every-one present had Colin’s wellbeing foremost in mind, and he escaped relatively unscathed, the ensuing gossip after the fifty minutes delay in recovering the car was of a mag-nificent effort by the Club, marshals, officials and fellow competitors. This was a great credit to everyone involved and emphasises what a close-knit group the Scottish sprint and hillclimb community is. Well done, all concerned!
John Mackenzie took his OMS to twin wins, but he was pushed hard on Saturday by John Munro who ended the day only 0.14 of a sec-ond adrift. A repeat of this confron-tation was lost when the Munro car was withdrawn overnight with the father and son taking up offers of double entries in the Mazda
Mayhem.
The challenge for FTD was then taken up by Louise Calder who was
third overall, but she could only repeat her 1.3 sec-ond deficit to Saturday’s winner. She did, however have the satisfaction of heading her two co-drivers, dad Colin on Saturday and big sister Heather next day.
The track temperatures in the autumn is not condu-cive to record breaking but Donald McCaskill did just that on the opening day, taking 0.61 of a sec-ond off the B4 record and coming within 0.15 of repeating the feat on Sunday.
In the class confrontations, other than double B4 winner Vicky Park’s narrow 0.14 win on Saturday over Craig Morrison, the closest finish came next day in C1 where Graham Clark avenged his first day defeat by Drew Murray with a 0.18 winning margin.
A fitting way, this to end the Guyson action before retreating into winter hibernation.
WILL HALL ON TOP AT LOTON
Will Hall ended a successful season with a fine double success in the run-offs at the popular Shropshire hill on 28th September, bringing his total wins in his 3.5 litre Force-Nissan WH to five for the year and confirming his third position in the 2014 Avon Tyres British Hillclimb Championship. Scott Moran, having sealed the Championship at Doune the previous week-end, finished a quarter of a second down on Hall both run-offs and was pipped for the runner-up spot on the lunchtime session by Jos Goodyear.
It was another good weekend for Goodyear, with a second and third in the run-offs which clinched him the Leaders Championship and fourth place in the Avon Tyres British Hillclimb Championship which must have pleased designer Graeme Wight Jr no end. Wallace Menzies double-entered Will Hall’s car and came seventh and sixth in the run-offs, very commendable in an unfamiliar car.
LAST SPRINTS GO TO SAMPSON AND HOLMES SBD Motorsport British Sprint Championship
Round 14 Anglesey October 4th At just 16 year and 317 days John Munro became the youngest ever qualifier for any British Top Twelve Run-off. On Saturday he finished eleventh and broke the 1100 class record on each run and on Sunday he managed eighth and again broke the 1100 class record on each run. On Thursday, he starts in the Henry Surtees Challenge at Buckmore Park and the entire British Sprint Championship wish him well.
The Saturday event on the National course was run in near perfect if blustery conditions and the run-off was a cliff hanger. Mark Smith and co-driver Craig Sampson broke a drive shaft during qualifying and it was touch and go if they could get it repaired in time as they didn’t have a spare! After a mad dash to Holyhead Smith returned and the pair just beat the deadline to take their runs. Sampson ran first and a slow run to test the repaired shaft was the priority. Smith then charged into the lead only for Sampson to pip him to the win on his second run claiming his first ever round win. John Graham just held off Steve Broughton for third place as Steve Miles limped home ahead of Matt Hillam. Tony Jarvis and Martin Webb were once again on the pace with their shared Dallara.
Round 15 Anglesey October 5th The Sunday event on the International course suffered variable conditions with heavy rain squalls and severe gales. Smith and Sampson were reduced to spectators when the repaired driveshaft shattered during the first qualifying runs. Terry Holmes, who was somewhat off the pace on Saturday’ stormed through to take the win in fine style. Steve Miles, who was nursing a twisted driveshaft both days, grabbed second when he threw caution to the wind and nailed the start for the first time all week-end.
John Graham again took third as he struggled with a lack of top end speed due to only being able to run hillclimb ratios. Steve Broughton and Matt Hillam followed in their shared Dallara which continues to run full circuit aero. The Sports Libres were well represented with Jim Belt in the Juno finishing seventh whilst the Radicals of Kurt Ramsden and Matt Carter were ninth and tenth. Also making it into the run-off was Roy Munro, John’s father, but he only took one run to avoid overheating the Suzuki mo-tor and possibly robbing John of his second run.
