Introduction
AUDI has been producing state-of-the-arteight-cylinder engines since 1988. Enginedisplacement has increased from 3.6 litres to4.2 litres.
The V8 engine together with AluminiumSpace Frame technology was the technicalbasis for Audi's breakthrough into the luxuryclass of car manufacturing.

For design reasons, the speed of the planetcarrier of the Ravigneaux planetary gear train
has been used in the past to control shiftoperations.
The inductive sender G182 serves thispurpose. The speed of the planet carrier wasconverted to a turbine speed in the gearbox

Automatically controlled air recirculationmode
In automatic air recirculation mode, a change-over from fresh air mode to air recirculationmode takes place automatically when thesensor detects noxious smells.
In automatic air recirculation mode, thechange-over takes place as soon as the airquality sensor detects pollutants, i.e. beforenoxious smells actually develop.

The operating principle
A gas sensor detects pollutants in theambient air.
When a high pollutant concentration ismeasured, a signal is transmitted tooperating and display unit E87, whichthen switches from fresh air mode to airrecirculation mode.
If the pollutant concentration drops below agiven threshold, fresh air is again supplied tothe vehicle interior.
The period between the detection ofpollutants and the closing of the fresh airsupply is bridged by the activated charcoal inthe combination lter.
The operating and display unit decides
whether to carry out a change-overautomatically depending on the level of airpollution, the ambient temperature, driverinput and whether the compressor is on oroff.
The automatic air recirculationfunction can be switched on or offmanually.

The evaluation electronics in the sensor
The evaluation electronics integrated in theultrasonic sensor module react to changes insensor conductivity.
It achieves a high degree of sensitivity.
The system is self-adaptive, i.e. self-learning.
The electronics determine the averagepollutant concentration in the ambient airand send a request for air recirculation to theair conditioner control unit by means of asquare-wave signal.
The control unit now closes the airrecirculation ap and fresh air ap dependingon the ambient temperature, driver input, whether the compressor is on or off and theextent of air pollution at peak pollution levels.
This ensures that the system is notcontinuously switched to air recirculation

Air quality sensor G238
In principle, the sensor operates in much thesame way as a lambda probe.
The measuring element is a mixed oxidesensor which incorporates semiconductortechnology (tin oxide - SnO 2).Sensitivity to noxious gases is increased bycatalytic additives consisting of platinum andpalladium.
The sensor has an operating temperatureof approx. 350 o C. Its power consumption of0.5 watts is very low.

The combination lter
The combination lter is a dust and pollenlter made of a non-woven fabric with anadditional lter inlay of activated charcoalgranulate.
The non-woven fabric lters out dust andpollen.
The non-woven fabric can also lter outgaseous pollutants such as ozone, benzene, nitrogen dioxide and otherpollutants in the air owing through thelter.
Function
To absorb the gaseous impurities in the airowing through the lter until the fresh airap is closed and the air conditioning systemhas gone into air recirculation mode.
Air then no longer ows through the lter.Air recirculation mode inevitably extends thelter's service life.
The activated charcoal layer reacts differentlyto different pollutants:
Certain pollutants are bound permanentlyin the lter.
Others are converted to harmlesscompounds in much the same way as in acatalytic converter.
The activated charcoal has the sameeffect on the remaining pollutants as a
Service
The combination lter must bethe prescribed service interval

Interrogate fault memory
With the introduction of CAN systems, theinterrogation/fault numbers which aremonitored and stored have beenincremented.
In the fault memory of the Audi A8, forexample, this results in the followingadditional fault locations which can bedisplayed:

together with the valve form a compact unitwhich is bolted to the rim.
An intelligent sensor developed speciallyfor this application is located here.
This sensor comprises a pressure sensor, atemperature sensor and an integrated circuitfor complete measured-value acquisition and
signal conditioning. This sensor activates the HF transmitterstage. The sensor and transmitter stage arepowered by a lithium battery.
The receiver aerial
receives the data message supplied by thewheel sensor and transfers this to the controlunit for tyre pressure monitoring for furtherprocessing.

Ultrasound converter
The ultrasound converters are housed in thefront and rear bumper covers. They act asactuators and sensors, i.e. they transmit andreceive signals.
Control unit for parking aid J446 gives thecommand to transmit or receive ultrasonicwaves.
The converters receive an echo reected bythe obstacle. In the converters, evaluationelectronics calculate the distance betweenthe vehicle and an obstacle from the echopropagation time, i.e. the time betweentransmission and reception of the signal tothe individual converters.
The evaluation electronics in the
converters generate digital signals from theecho signals and relay them to the controlunit.
In the control unit, the time between thecommand to transmit ultrasonic waves andreceive digital signals from the converter isevaluated by timers.
The distance between the vehicle and theobstacle is calculated from the different timescomputed by the control unit using thetriangulation method.
Triangulation
From the various distances it can beconcluded that the object is located betweenthe 2nd and 3rd converters. Height h can bedetermined using Pythagoras theorem. Theresulting distance is 44 cm.

The windscreen wiper system used on theAudi A8 has been redesigned on the driver'sside.
The purpose of the revision is to reducenoise levels. This was achieved by using amodied wipe operation.
The wiper blade has an additional pivot pointon the windscreen wiper arm which allows itto turn into the headwind earlier.
