AN HONORARY SERVICE FRATERNITYSigma Sigma Phi is an Honorary Osteopathic Service Fraternity whose objectives and purposes are the following: to further the science of osteopathic medicine and its standards of practice, to improve the scholastic standing and promote a higher degree of fellowship among its students, to bring about a closer relationship and understanding between the student bodies and the officials and members of the faculties of our colleges, and to foster allegiance to the American Osteopathic Association and to perpetuate these principles and the teachings through the maintenance and development of this organization.

REQUIREMENTS

o Minimum overall GPA of >85%

o Strong background in community service

o Involvement in extracurricular activities

o Must show a high degree of scholarship and service to profession

o As members:o Maintain a GPA >85%o Plan and carry out an original service projecto Participate in a minimum of 6 hours of community service per term

Membership Financial Statement

o As of October 1, 2015 our bank account statement reads $1,552.46

o As of October 1, 2015 we have not received any funding from the Student Organizations Council.

o We applied for the Albert D’Alonzo Memorial Student Fund for additional funding, and will be notified in the coming weeks.

o Members receive up to $60 each for their service projects.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE

o The Ronald McDonald House provides families of children undergoing medical treatment a place to stay that is near the hospital so that they can provide care and support for their loved ones.

o Volunteers purchased breakfast supplies and subsequently prepared the meal for families staying at a local Ronald McDonald House. The French Toast was an especially big hit last year.

MANNA

o MANNA is an organization dedicated to providing meals for adults in the Greater Philadelphia Area with terminal illness.

o MANNA’s meal and delivery service is free of charge, tailored to meet the dietary needs of the patient, and delivered to the patients door 7 days a week.

o Volunteers helped to make and package meals, prepare the trucks for delivery, and assisted with clean-up afterward to ensure daily operations were carried out smoothly.

SREHUPo The Student-Run Emergency Housing Unit of Philadelphia (SREHUP) is an initiative of Philadelphia area college-students who shelter people experiencing homelessness. The students offer guests warm meals, a place to sleep, a caring environment, and a variety of holistic programs designed to get them back on their feet. SREHUP also works year-round to advocate for the policy changes that are needed to eradicate homelessness.

o Volunteers a clothing and necessity drive at school and distributed the items to guests at the shelter, in addition to cooking and serving a home-prepared meal.

BACK ON MY FEET

o Back On My Feet uses running to help those experiencing homelessness change the way they see themselves to effect real change in their lives.

o Volunteers organized and distributed packages of clothing to members of the House of Passage.

o The House of Passage is a 100-bed facility for single women that provides supportive services including a computer lab, educational and vocational services, as well as community building events.

PHILABUNDANCE

o Philabundance is a non-profit food bank that serves the Philadelphia and Delaware Valley region of Pennsylvania. It is the largest such organization in the region.

o Volunteers sorted and packaged food for the food bank.

NORTHERN HOME

o The Northern Children’s and Mother’s Home is a non-profit organization that has campus with residential living spaces for chronically homeless young women and children as well as provides needed services for at risk children and their families.

o Volunteers brought arts and crafts supplies to make votive candle holders with the girls aged 8-13. The girls then gave these to their mothers for Mother’s Day gifts.

CHANGES FOR 2015-2016 SCHOOL YEARo Increase our presence on campus by hosting Speaker Series events

o Incorporate student mental well-being into our focus

o Network with local clinicians to set up shadowing opportunities for members

o Partner with other Student Organizations to increase participation in community service events

o Create a Sigma Sigma Phi T-shirt for members to purchase

o Increase collaboration on ideas with our advisor, Dr. Belkoff

o Create an alumni database for members to access based on specialty
