Current System General Assessment

This Template is a suggested approach to standardize the information collected from a Mechanical Cooling System. This tool has been designed for use on a Windows based PC or tablet using Microsoft Office Word 2007 or newer. Through the use of screen captures and pull-down menu options this tool will assist in summarizing the As-Found details and operational sequences for this equipment.

Template Guide

a) Screen-Shot: Where screen shots are indicated, a short instructional image is provided with a step-by-step procedure designed to assist a novice Windows user in the capturing of a specific view from a PC screen and placement within this document. The approach described is one of many variants possible which is intended to provide a general description to provide the results being sought. (See example below…)

b) Text Prompts: Where specific information is required, blank text boxes and prompts have been provided for data entry. To enter data in these fields, simply click on the grey box and start typing in relevant information to correspond with the category heading. The box size will adjust to accommodate the amount of text entered into the field. (See example below…)

c) Pull-Down Menus: Throughout the document pull-down menus have been provided with a list of options available to select from. Obviously not all possible choices for each category could be anticipated for each category – in these cases a blank field has been made available to record specific details for each category. Where blank fields have been provided, the pull-down menus have been provided as a convenience and should not be considered as the only options from which to select from for each category. Where a pull-down menu is used to confirm whether a line item has been reviewed or not, select a suitable response to complete the form. (See examples below…)

d) Additional Remarks (column): This field has been provided as another area to add any additional comments deemed relevant by the system assessor for each category. Information included in this column is entirely optional and at the discretion of the system assessor. (See example below…)

e) Check-boxes: The use of check-boxes provides a quick means of documenting large amounts of repetitive information in a clean and organized fashion. To open up the Check Box Field Options window, double-click on the grey box to be checked and select the Checked option under the Default value – then select OK. (See example below…)

f) System equipment selection check-boxes: The use of check-boxes provides an easy and efficient way of identifying the equipment and features of a particular system. To identify equipment as part of the system, select the check-box next to the equipment title, double-click on the grey box and select the Checked option under the Default value – then select OK. Once the check-box is checked, the equipment section may be filled in. If equipment listed in the template is not part of the system, check the check-box next to “Not Applicable” by following the same procedure as described above. If the equipment is checked as “Not Applicable”, the

section contents can be deleted leaving only the section title to clearly show that it is not relevant to the particular system. (See example below…)

g) Y or N: Another quick means of documenting large amounts of repetitive information in a clean and organized fashion, similar to check-boxes, is the Y (for Yes) and N (for No) entry fields. These fields provide a positive or negative response to the topic listed at the top of the column. Simply enter a Y or N in the grey field provided. (See example below…)

h) General Editing and Document Maintenance: Beyond all the special features of the template, it is essentially a word document when completed. Where excess screen-shot categories, text-prompts, unused pull-down menus or redundant rows remain after entering all relevant information pertaining to the AHU, the user should tidy-up the document by deleting any unused or redundant template clutter to complete the process and produce a clean informative document representative of the effort put into completing it. The Template Guide Section (shown in blue) instructions and diagrams should also be deleted once the document is complete.

i) Alternate Formats: In circumstances where alternate documents are used in place of this template, Manitoba Hydro will require all categories indicated in this template will be included and suitable description will be provided.

The ultimate objective of this assessment is to identify ESO’s that can be considered for Energy Conservation Measures within the Program requirements for this particular system. In support of this objective, a list of Common Energy Saving Opportunities (ESO’s) has been provided in Table CMCSa of this Template (Review All Line Items on Table CMCSa – Current System | Common Mechanical Cooling Energy Saving Opportunities …on the next page). Table CMCSb has been included for any other ESO’s that can be identified (See CMCSb – Current System | PBC Purposed Mechanical Cooling Energy Saving Opportunities). The far right column of Table 4a – Current System | Mechanical Cooling Sequences of Operation Assessment has been included to document all ESO recommendations for this system (See example below…).

Table 4a – Current System | Chiller Mechanical Cooling System Sequences of Operation Assessment:Chiller Components

Prior to any in-depth functional test, it is recommended during the ESO Investigation phase to verify proper system operation under normal operating conditions over time. Commonly, operational issues may not be apparent when a system is “forced” into a particular operational state via over-riding sensors or changing set-points. Utilizing existing BAS Trending capabilities or Stand-Alone Data-Loggers is recommended to capture and verify actual system operation under normal operating conditions. Trend measurement sample rates between 1 & 5 minutes or based Change-Of-Value (COV) are recommended over a time period of 2 weeks to include at least one Monday morning following recovery after a weekend. Select a minimum group of trended points to meet the analysis requirements of this template.
