Sporting glory WHAT IT TAKES Athletes, whether they are professionals or amateurs and whatever their field of sport, all strive to be the best they possibly can. Those that excel are a great inspiration to us all and can motivate and encourage us in their pursuit of excellence. The ultimate aim is to be number one, but to do that sports people must have a number of qualities. To be awarded the title of being the best in a sport they must: Be confident Be prepared Practise Be committed Be focused and be able to concentrate Be relaxed Show self-control Deal with pressure Deal with distractions Cope with success and failure Be persistent Know their strengths and weaknesses AUSSIE BREAKS RECORD A MASSIVE two minutes and 50 seconds has been shaved off the record for an unassisted solo crossing of the English Channel by Australian Trent Grimsey. The Queenslander began his 34km marathon at Dover in southern England and arrived at Cap-Gris-Nez, France six hours 55 minutes later. BOOK of the WEEK IN THIS month’s release, Ethics 101 Conversations to have with your Kids (Jane Curry Publishing $24.95), author Michael Parker prompts discussion by posing 101 ethical questions and their logical progressions. Have you ever dreamt of competing at a ma- jor sports event or pulling on the green and gold to represent Australia in a sporting arena? Perhaps you have played in a grand final for your local sporting club, crossed the line first in a race or have watched your favourite team lift the winner’s trophy. We all like the feeling we get when we as indivi- duals or our team achieves something on the sporting field. In Australia, we are very passionate about sport because it has played an important role in shap- ing our national identity. GOOD SPORT Everyone likes to win. No one really enjoys losing, but when you’re playing sports, there is always going to be a winner or a loser (unless the game ends in a draw). An important part of playing sports is good sportsmanship. How you and your team act before, during and after a game says as much about you as a sportsperson as does the skills you use while competing. No one likes to play with a ‘bad loser’. THE TROPHY The culmination of most sporting events is the presentation of trophies, medals or prizes to the winner and runners-up of the contest. Trophies have marked victories since ancient times and have continued to serve as proof of an achievement. The word trophy is de- rived from words meaning “a spoil, prize of war or monument to victory”.
