ANY material that is disposed of in- correctly is litter. Whether dropped on the ground, thrown out of a car window or dumped on the side of the road, delib- erately or accidentally, litter is a visible sign of pollution. Not only is it ugly, litter can be dangerous and has significant environmental, social and economic impacts on communities. It can spread germs and disease, contaminate water, kill animal life and even injure people. Rubbish not disposed of correctly can give the impression that no-one cares or is responsible. Our waterways, parks, beaches and streets in local communities are becoming increasingly polluted with discarded rubbish. It is important to change our habits and attitudes to help keep our country clean. With an increase in the world pop- ulation and its high consumption of pro- ducts there is a problem. We are generat- ing more waste than the environment can absorb. We need to reduce our waste to lessen the impact it has on the environment. The best way to reduce waste is to follow the 5R’s – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Renew and Recycle. It helps us to manage our waste and dispose of it in better ways. REFUSE – Re-think the pro- ducts you purchase and avoid those goods that produce excessive amounts of waste. REDUCE – Minimise the amount of waste by reducing the number of dis- posable products you use. REUSE – Instead of throwing items out, find another use for them. RENEW – When possible use items and resources that are renewable. RECYCLE – Many products can be recycled at home or at recycling centres where they can be used to make new products. Litter-bugs HAVE you ever seen these types of litter- ers? Wedgers: stuff or wedge their litter in small places, such as a gap between seats, so it will not be seen. Undertakers: cover or bury their litter under soil, sand or leaves. Foul-shoo- ters: aim for the bin, miss and leave the object on the ground. “Effective waste management strategies contribute to the creation of a cleaner, less wasteful and more sustainable society.” – CSIRO INTERESTING FACTS According to the 2010 clean Up Australia report: The top ten rubbish items are:- 1.
