Happy holidays!

Last month I mentioned how I was

looking forward to the festive holiday

weekend of December 13th & 14th.

Well, it did not disappoint.

We had a great Christmas party on

Friday December 13th that featured

excellent Italian food and fantastic

music played by our own resident DJ,

Phil Szaflarski. His selection of mu-

sic and requests from the guests got

everybody up and dancing, even me

(hope no one took pictures). A BIG

shout out and thank you to Cookie

Miller for organizing the event and

Christine Dennison for assisting in

decorating the club house. It looked

great! There were some really great

Raffle Prizes. Jeromy Gamble won

the grand prize, a Ring Door Bell Se-

curity System. Hank & Connie Cardo-

so won a $50 gift card to the Olive

Garden, Ella Fernandez won a $25

gift card to the Longhorn Steak

House, Cookie Miller won a $50 gift

card to the WAWA Store, Donna Cole

won a $25 gift card to Dunkin Dough-

nuts, and Lynn Olson won a $25 gift

card to Home Depot. All in all it was

an enjoyable evening with friends and

fellow Sea Pines neighbors, many of

whom I met for the first time.

Sorry if you missed it, but I know Fri-

day’s can be difficult for some people

so we are planning next year’s Christ-

mas party to be held on Saturday, De-

cember 11th which is the second Sat-

urday of December. Please mark your

calendar and join us next year.

On Saturday night, December 14th,

we were treated to the annual Christ-

mas boat parade along the canals of Sea

Pines. Another BIG thank you to Je-

romy Gamble for organizing this event.

This colorful tradition of Sea Pines is

getting bigger and has the attention of

neighboring communities. The date for

this event next year is Saturday, Decem-

ber 5th. I encourage those with a boat to

plan on joining the parade by contacting

Jeromy Gamble at 352-428-6533 for de-

tails.

Also this year we revived the Christmas

Light Challenge. A shout out to Shevelle

Finney & Jerry Sweet for organizing the

event and all those who participated.

Sea Pines looked fantastic!

At the last SPCA general meeting in De-

cember the membership voted in the

SPCA board for 2020. The board re-

mains the same except we have a new

‘at-large’ representative. I am pleased

to welcome Matt Copeland to the board.

The SPCA Board values your ideas,

thoughts and opinions regarding Sea

Pines (as a whole). Please join the

SPCA and take time to attend (2 hours a

month) the meetings.

Some of you have mentioned that Old

Dixie Hwy looks really bad in that

stretch up to New York Ave. We hear

you and we are planning an Adopt-A-

Road cleanup on Saturday, January

18th. If you can, please volunteer a cou-

ple of hours to help us clean up the

trash. We will meet at the club house at

8:00 am for instructions.

Here’s hoping you have a wonderful and

safe New Year!

The meeting was called to order at 7:00PM. All members of the board except Roger Chillura were present, so there was a quor-um. A motion was made and seconded to approve the minutes of the November meeting as printed in the newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report Jerry Sweet read the treasurer’s report and the only question was regarding the Pasco County Storm water assessment for $465.12. Jerry explained that this amount covers all the common areas of Sea Pines including the parks. Report of Standing Committees Activities & Events committee (Cookie Miller) There was a general consensus that, even with the smaller turn-out, the Christmas Party was a big success. It will be planned for a Saturday night in 2020. Mark your calendars now for next year on: 12/11/2020. We will be looking forward to adding more events to the social calendar next year. Boat Ramp committee (Jerry Sweet & Jeromy Gamble) There will be signs posted to warn residents to be careful on the boat ramp. Sunshine committee (Open position) This position remains open. If someone is interested please con-tact a member of the board. Mowing committee (Pat Piccininno) Things remain the same with this committee. We need more volunteers to help maintain our common areas.

Adopt-a-Road committee (Ernie Reed) The next Adopt-A-Road cleanup of Old Dixie is scheduled for January 18th 2020. The discussion about cleaning up the road and how quickly the garbage accumulates led to questions about the homeless camps in the woods along Old Dixie. It was explained that it is private property and unfortunately there is nothing that the Civic Association or even Pasco County can do about the situation.

Membership Dues committee (Jerry Sweet) 2020 invoices will be mailed ASAP. The online payment system is being tweaked and will be demonstrated at the January mem-bership meeting. Remember that the dues have been increased from $45 to $50 for 2020. Parks committee (Roger Chillura) It was brought up that the gate to Southwinds Park is not being opened and closed on any schedule. Residents who live near the park said that it does get closed but not locked. They feel like people who are coming into the park at night are leaving the gate open. This is one of the first things we will look into when the electrical connection is installed at the park. We hope to in-stall a gate with a fob to allow access to residents, but provide some measure of security for the property. Newsletter committee (Jerry Sweet) All input for the newsletter should be submitted by the 21st of the month. Welcoming committee (Donna Hodnicki)The current chair-man will be stepping down from this committee. If you would like to be involved in welcoming new residents to Sea Pines, please contact a board member.

Website committee (Randy Dennison) The website now has an e-Commerce page to allow residents to purchase a SPCA membership or a boat ramp fob. Please re-member to check out the new website (www.SeaPines-FL.com). This URL is posted above the clubhouse door and on the Sea Pines signage. Visitors to the site are steady (roughly 400+ unique visitors to the site each month).

Unfinished or Old Business Membership approved the installation of a meter box in South-wind Park at the November meeting. Randy Dennison is work-ing with Kazar’s Electric to complete the permitting process and schedule an install date. New Business The slate of officers and board members was presented to the membership for vote. The officers and board members for the 2020 calendar year are as follows: President Randy Dennison Vice President Jeromy Gamble Secretary Sara Hernandez Treasurer Jerry Sweet Preserve Rep Matt Copeland Woodlands Rep Roger Chillura At-Large Rep Ken Hodnicki During the new business discussion, the subject of the condition of Sea Pines Drive came up again. It was mentioned that there are three different sanitation services doing business in Sea Pines and that those heavy trucks might be causing some of the wear and tear on the roads. Apparently, Republic, which is the largest provider, is not taking new customers. There was also a question about the cars for sale that are parked on 19. This, along with the condition of Sea Pines Drive, are county issues that Sea Pines does not have authority over. Upcoming Events: All of the Women’s Club events can be found in the newsletter and on the calendar on the website. A motion was made and seconded, and the meeting was ad-journed at 7:55PM.

Because Home is Where the heart Is

At Touches of Home Realty, I work hard to

provide customers with the services they need to

make their transactions run smoothly. I offer

an a la carte menu of services so consumers can

chose what level and types of services they need.

Whether a buyer, seller, tenant, investor, or just

curious about the local area, contact me or visit

my website for more information. I am local to

the area and live in Sea Pines. So if you see me

The Veterans Corner

REMINDER- STARTING Jan 1st, if you have a ser-

vice connected disability of 0-100% and do not already

have a DOD military ID Card; you can enter most mil-

itary installations with a VA Medical ID Card . It

must show your service logo and under your picture if

you are Service Connected. If you do not have this ID

you can get one at the nearest VA medical facility.

*This new benefit is only for the veteran.* A spouse,

friends or children will not be admitted unless they

have a military ID Card or VA ID card themselves. DO

NOT argue with the MP's or civilian police contractors

at the gate about bringing non- authorized people on

base with you.

A caregiver with paperwork from a doctor can be is-

sued a special ID card to go with you but there is a

process to permit this to happen. You can contact the

VA at 1-800-827-1000 for information about caregiv-

ers.

You need to stop at the visitor control center or Pass

& ID office prior to your first visit to the base under

these new rules. Some bases may allow veterans to

sign up for recurring base access, which will allow

them to bypass the visitor center on subsequent visit.

All veterans and caregivers visiting the base under

these new rules are subject to the same rules as others

who enter a DoD installation. * This means you may

be subject to vehicle inspections, background checks,

and other forms of security screening each time you

come on base/post. Everyone goes through a security

screening the first time using your new benefit. *

Veterans or caregivers with felony convictions, felony

arrest warrants, or other types of derogatory infor-

mation related to criminal history or terrorism will not

be permitted entry.

Remember, as when you were in the military, do not

purchase items to resell or buy things for people who

are not eligible for military benefits and they ask you

to buy something for them. You can end up losing priv-

ileges and or end up in jail. Respect your benefits so

others do not lose them too.

JANUARY RECIPE

If you are looking for something to warm you ..stop here. The holidays are over, and winter is upon us, so it is “soup” time! This is my own recipe for homemade split pea soup. I love to have it on a cold evening or afternoon. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is especially yummy with toasted French bread!

Please check out the monthly newsletters for information regarding the Sea Pines Women’s Club activities. We would love to see you at any of our activities.

SPLIT PEA & HAM SOUP

In a large pot add:

3 large carrots sliced

½ large onion chopped

3 stalks celery chipped

2 tablespoons of olive oil

On medium heat, Simmer until onions are almost clear. Stir as needed.

Add to Pot:

Leftover ham bone with cubed ham ( I use as much , ham as I can…. About 5 cups.. or more)

One pkg of dried split peas

One box of low-salt chicken broth

2 bay leaves

½ teaspoon sage

½ teaspoon tarragon

1 tablespoon parsley

½ teaspoon basal

fresh ground pepper. ( I don’t add salt, as the ham usually has enough in it).

Fill pot with water (about 1 gallon or more if necessary).

I usually simmer on top of stove for 3 to 4 hours—more if necessary. The peas should be all dissolved. If it gets too thick I add more water.

Make sure to remove the bay leaves before serving .and of course, the bone too!

This soup will be thick and yummy. It will be thicker the sec-ond day… so you may need to add water. I hope you enjoy.

January is National Human Trafficking Aware-

ness Month. There will be various events this

month hosted by different organizations to raise

awareness and assist frontline groups combating

human trafficking. The Pasco Sheriff’s Office

will again be hosting the Light Up the Night

event at 6 p.m., on Saturday, February 1, at the

Shops at Wiregrass mall in Wesley Chapel. We

will highlight amazing organizations, raise

awareness, and stand together united in this

cause.

Human trafficking is known as "modern day

slavery." The perpetrators of this crime find vic-

tims who are vulnerable and use force or fraud

to exploit them. The International Labor Organi-

zation estimates that there are 40.3 million vic-

tims of human trafficking throughout the world,

who are exploited to the amount of $150 billion,

which certainly makes this a global epidemic.

The Polaris Project has identified many forms of

human trafficking and the three forms that are

the most identifiable and investigated here in

the United States includes labor trafficking, sex

trafficking, and involuntary servitude. We know

these three forms are present here in the Tampa

Bay area.

The Pasco Sheriff's Office, in partnership with

key stakeholders in our community, has been

working diligently over the years to end human

trafficking in Pasco County. Some of the meth-

ods and partnerships we have utilized have in-

cluded:

Hosting the annual Light Up The Night com-

munity awareness event;

Operating our Pasco County Human Traf-

ficking Task Force which is comprised of law

enforcement, code enforcement, fire inspec-

tors, building inspectors, Florida Department

of Health, and various non-governmental or-

ganizations (NGO);

Creating a specially-trained Human Traffick-

ing investigative unit;

Working with our local educational institu-

tions such as Pasco County schools, Pasco-

Hernando State College, and St Leo Univer-

sity to raise awareness and to enhance pre-

vention;

Partnering with Sunrise of Pasco to study

the cross-indicators of domestic violence,

sexual assault and human trafficking;

Being a member of our Pasco Commission

on Human Trafficking and the Tampa Bay

Human Trafficking Task Force, which is

comprised of more than 40 law enforcement

and NGOs, which was recently awarded a

US Dept. of Justice grant, and the state at-

torney general’s Statewide Council on Hu-

man Trafficking;

Working with the Florida Department of

Law Enforcement to create specific training

mandated by Florida law for statewide dis-semination;

Being a chair of the Criminal Justice sub-

committee creating working groups to pro-

pose effective strategies to effectively imple-

ment criminal justice remedies to reducing

human trafficking;

Providing training to identify and report

human trafficking for circuit task forces,

community groups, law enforcement,

NGO's, faith-based organizations, victim

services organizations, and many others;

Developing partnerships with federal, state,

and local agencies and organizations to ef-

fectively combat human trafficking;

As we move into 2020, the Pasco Sheriff’s Of-

fice will remain committed to our mission to

end human trafficking in our community. Re-

ducing the demand for human trafficking, res-

cuing the victims, and arresting the traffickers

and buyers remains one of our community's top

priorities.
