Shetland Sheepdog Club of Northern California Minutes of the General Meeting

October 20, 2018

Location: SSCNC Specialty at the Alameda County Fairgrounds, Pleasanton, California. The meeting was called to order by President Johanna Primeaux at 5:05 pm.

The following members were present:

Roxayn King John Strassner Diane LaClare Deborah Marks Yvonne Samuelson Mary Metz

Sue Cone Marianne Dub Pat Mahoney Julie Guttman Cindy Frusetta

Rachael Shaffer Lynn Azzopardi Brandi Friesen Diane Boross Jeri Wilson

The following board members were present:

Rebecca Logsdon Trudy Kerr Halina Christie

Patsi Nelson Anita Rasmussen Kathy Coon

Johanna Primeaux Kathy Rosdail Thomas True

We had the following guests:

• Mary Ann Murphy • Win Rogers • Olivia Ogilvie • Ann Balliet • Liliya Pokusin

Welcome to all our guests! Minutes: Approval of September’s minutes tabled until the next meeting. President’s Report: No report. Correspondence:

• Trudy said that she received a notice from the AKC approving the March 2019 agility trial. Treasurer: • We have money. • Thank you to our guests Win Rogers and Olivia Ogilvie for running the raffle at the Specialty. • Our expenses for the Specialty were really low and we had a pretty good entry, so we should make

money. • Calendars are on sale. $10 for members, $11 for nonmembers.

Trophies: All the trophies for the Specialty came in (after the owner’s recent illness, there was some doubt). Everyone agreed that they were gorgeous, some of the best ever. Ribbons: No report. Breeder Referral: Nothing new. Kathy C. thinks that a few people have sold dogs through it recently. Reminder: Postings in Breeder Referral are free to members in good-standing (a small fee if you want to post a photo). Special Awards: • Applications for performance plaques are due today. Lynn has extra forms. • We need to submit applications for plaques ASAP because it takes 6 weeks for Larry to make them. • Only members in good standing are eligible to receive plaques for free. Website: • Kathy C. said that there is not too much going on with the website at the moment. • Johanna encouraged everyone who took photos at the Specialty to send them for posting on the

website. We need fresh content! Bulletin: Rebecca thanked everyone who submitted to the October Bulletin. For future Bulletins, she made several suggestions, including photos or stories about an important dog or person in your life. Black and white photos are fine. Patsi said that she took many photos of the participants and winners at the Obedience & Rally Trial and will submit them for posting in the Bulletin. Hospitality: • Johanna said that we need a dedicated Hospitality Chairperson. Kathy R. has been filling in. • Basically, the job consists of taking care of the box of hospitality supplies, making coffee at the shows,

the puppy picnic, match (5 or 6 times a year). • You can make a committee and delegate jobs. • Diane Boross volunteered to take over Hospitality. In turn, Kathy C. volunteered to take over the Raffles

from Diane. Thank you Kathy and Diane! Education: • The Rose Chandless Seminar went well. There was lots of great information. It would have been nice to

have more sign ups. • Yvonne said that she talked to the Collie people regarding a seminar on skulls by Brenda Miramon.

There is a lot of interest. For dates, Yvonne is looking at the weekend after Woofstock. We need to figure out flights, who is going to pick her up and if we need to put her up in a motel. We need to look at the availability of Happiness Kennel. We are also looking at a structure and movement seminar, possible on the same weekend. There are a lot more details and investigation that needs to be done.

Membership: The members voted on and approved the membership application from Debbie Goehring. Welcome and congratulations to our new member! October 2018 Specialty: • Julie thanked everyone who helped with the Specialty. Thank you in particular to Kathy R. and to

Halina, Patsi, Cindy, Mark, Tom True and all the volunteers. Guttman said that we have hired a ring steward (Gail) for conformation.

• Thank you to Yvonne for stepping in to judge at the last minute.

• Thank you to hospitality for the great lunch. • Gail, our ring steward, was super organized. She would like to steward for us again next year. • Everyone agreed that Julie did a great job. • Patsi said that Obedience and Rally had a really nice entry. Our judge, Nancy Craig, was great.

Wonderful stewards. Good footing. May 2019 Specialties: • There will be a stand-alone Specialty on Friday, May 4th and a concurrent Specialty on Saturday, May

4th. • The show chairs are Diane Boross and Yvonne Samuelson. • We have all the judges signed up except the Obedience and Rally judge (Lora Cox). • Johanna said that she went to Gavilan KC’s recent meeting. They are donating use of their ropes and

stanchions to SSCNC for our shows. • The shows are pending AKC approval. We are waiting for the contract from Gavilan. Agility Trial: The next agility trial takes place March 22 – 24, 2019 at Robertson Park in Livermore. Christmas Party: • The party takes place December 8th at Cattlemen’s in Livermore. The prices are the same. The party

starts at 11 am, with service starting at 11:30 am. • We will have a raffle and a gift exchange. • The party counts as a meeting (no business will be taking place unless it is urgent). • The flyer will go out soon. • Remember: If you have a special award trophy, please bring it back in time for the party.

Old Business: • 70th Anniversary Celebrations:

o Next year is the 70th anniversary of our first conformation show (held in 1949). o It will also be the 40th anniversary of our first obedience trial. o We want to celebrate these milestones next year, beginning with the Specialties in May and

building up to the Specialty in October, with special events along the way (the Puppy Picnic will be one location).

o We want photographs, stories, anecdotes, etc. • Gavilan Raffle Basket:

o Kathy C. said that she would like to get started on putting together the big raffle basket that we are donating to Gavilan’s raffle (Gavilan has a terrific raffle). Let her know if you would like to donate.

o It was suggested that we include items which say “SSCNC 70 Years”. New Business: • Sheltie Rescue:

o The Board has been alerted to a situation regarding Sheltie Rescue. We do not have all the facts yet, so there will be no discussion at this time. The matter is being investigated.

Next Meetings: • November 18th – Round Table Pizza in Fremont (most likely). Time TBD.

Still from “The Secret Life of Pets”

Message from Julie Guttman, October 2018 Specialty Chair I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you who helped in any way in putting our October Specialty together. As you may or may not know, I have never shown a dog in a Conformation Show, nor have competed in Obedience/Rally, so my knowledge of putting on such a collective event before this year’s Specialty was minimal, at the most. However, with the over-the-top mentoring of Kathy Rosdail, and with her fabulous “Specialty Show Chair” binder she prepared (which was filled with every conceivable outline, explanation, brochure and contact information you can think of), it made it not so overwhelming. I appreciate and thank Kathy for her patience and sharing her vast knowledge and experience with me -- taking the time to each month to go over all the requisite tasks that needed to be done, and how, when each task is just broken down into small bits, and that each little bit could be done in increments over time (e.g., a few to-do items each month, or each week), it’s actually not so daunting! Although Kathy was supposed to be my “Assistant Show Chair,” she went way above and beyond the call of duty in getting things organized and set up before the show (along with Halina Christie and Trudy Kerr), and was a constant “whirling dervish” all day on Saturday, in making sure the ribbons and trophies and hospitality area (and everything else) was set up properly and everything and everyone was doing okay. I cannot thank Kathy enough for her assistance and tutoring (again, the binder she set up is awesome!!), her constant follow-up with me about making sure everything on that wonderful checklist was getting checked off, and making sure I was following up with everyone to ensure things were on tract. (By the way, I apologize if I was being a “nudge” with anyone in my constant following up!) A massive thank you to Halina Christie, our “Show Secretary extraordinaire,” whose work “behind the scenes” was huge! Thank you Patsi Nelson for your incredible work as being the Obedience/Rally Chair, who, in my humble opinion did such a great job! Patsi, along with her awesome volunteer team of Nancy Rynewicz, Marianne Dub, Rebecca Logsdon and Ellen Fletcher were like a well-oiled machine! Every time I came by to see if any of you needed any help, your response was always, “we’re all good!” Thank you to Tom True for being our Equipment Chair and for getting everything assembled (and disassembled) seamlessly. Thank you to Mark Hersman for being our super-duper Ribbon Chair and for delivering such beautiful ribbon awards this year! A BIG thank you to Cindy Frusetta for being our Trophy Chair and for pulling off a last minute (and very creative) coordination of getting the trophies transported safely up to Pleasanton (as their delivery to her home was much, much later than expected). The trophies were totally worth waiting for as they were so unique and beautiful and very special!! A very special thank you and acknowledgment to Yvonne Samuelson for agreeing to step in at the last minute as the Juniors Judge, in place of Janet Hitt who was not able to make it for health reasons. Thank you to our Hospitality Volunteers, Mary Metz and Kathy Coon, who, along with Hospitality Chair, Kathy Rosdail, coordinated and prepared a most delicious judges/volunteers luncheon and coffee/tea station.

Thank you to Anita Rasmussen and Diane Boross for quickly putting together the great Raffle. I want to especially thank our fabulous volunteers, Win Rogers and Olivia Ogilvie, who, even though they are not members of the club (yet), manned the Raffle area all day long, assisting with ticket sales and other items as needed. Lastly, thank you to everyone who helped take down the tables and clean up at the end of the day. If I missed anyone, please forgive me. I am grateful for all of your collective help -- you made my job easy! You all ROCK!! And, without all of your help, we could not have put on such a such a wonderful and successful Specialty! Thank you all again! With warmest regards, Julie
