Cross curricular themes - Languages
The main changes to the MFL programme of study:• No set topics• Emphasis on active learning and creativity• Stronger focus on links with other subjects• Greater focus on skills
Intended impact on learners:• This approach goes beyond the classroom and
is about ‘doing’ as well as ‘knowing’• Students working on engaging topics involving
real communication with native speakers• Addresses other countries and cultures
Broader understanding of the skills we now teach:
• Pattern-finding• Link-making• Pronunciation• Memorising• Autonomy• Communicating (meaning making)• Creativity• Performing• Collaborating• Listening (audience skills)
Ideas on how to integrate other curriculum concepts, topics, techniques and skills into MFL.

Jan Marthin Pasalbessy's story. He only wanted his daughter to be safe. Christina, 14, was the victim of a racist attack in June 2000, near where she lived with her widower father in Newport, Gwent. Mr Pasalbessy, a 48-year-old former merchant seaman from Indonesia, took her to the royal Gwent hospital for head x-rays. There, by chance, he ran into members of the group who had attacked his daughter. This time it was the father who got the racist abuse; The gang, some just teenagers, laid in to him, kicking and punching him to the ground, while Christina looked on, terrified. Mr Pasalbessy died the next day from head injuries, leaving his daughter an orphan.
¿Verdad o mentira?

Anyone Who…Students sit in circle on chairs apart form one students who stands in the middle of the circle. The students in the centre says ‘Anyone who…’ then anything that is true to them selves. For example, ‘Anyone who is wearing black shoes’ or ‘Anyone who had toast for breakfast.’ If it is true to any student sitting in the circle they have to switch seats, as does the person in the centre. The person who does not have a seat then stands in the middle and says ‘Any one who…’

Yes Let’s!Take it in turns to suggest an activity which can be quite mundane, but the whole group has to shout enthusiastically “Yes! Let’s!” in response to any suggestions, then you all do the activity together. This will work best if you suggest the first two or three things then let others shout them out.e.g. teacher - “Let’s touch our noses”class - “ Yes, let’s!” (all touch noses enthusiastically)teacher - “Let’s clap our hands/turn around/lie on the floor/hop on one leg” etc.class - “Yes, let’s!”
Make your final suggestion “Let’s all sit quietly in a circle boy- girl- boy - girl”

Who Likes… ?All sit in a circle. Choose someone to stand in the middle and take their chair away. The person in the middle makes a statement such as ‘Change places if you like Drama’ The seated members of the group must swap seats with someone else if the question relates to them. The person in the middle has to find a seat too! The result is that there is always someone left without a seat. They then make another statement like ‘Change places if you have blond hair’ and the game continues. Note: It is important to discourage pushing in this game, and for reluctant pupils, statements to do with facts (like blue eyes, blond hair etc.) work better!

Voice warm upAll sit in a circle.Give a simple statement such as ‘I like walking in summer’ or ‘Collecting all of the Pokemon cards is difficult’.Get everybody to repeat the statement a number of times (all at once). Now ask them to say it different ways, for example as if: You are talking to a toddler You are shouting across the playground You are bored of saying it so many times You are coming around after an operation

What has changed and why?
• To give schools greater flexibility to tailor learning to their learners’ needs, there is less prescribed subject content in the new programmes of study. Pupils will still be taught essential subject knowledge. However, the new curriculum balances subject knowledge with the key concepts and processes that underlie the discipline of each subject.
The main changes in the new POS for MFL• No set topics• No rules about which languages may
be taught• Emphasis on active learning and
creativity• Stronger focus on linking with other
subjects• Level descriptions aligned with the
languages ladder
What should our vision be for languages in this new context?
The curriculum without languages:
This?
The curriculum with languages?
Or this?
Teachers will be able to:
•personalise the curriculum, designing their own subject curriculum to meet individual needs and engage all learners
•provide focused support and greater challenge where needed, helping to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to make progress and achieve, particularly in the key areas of English and Mathematics
•design coherent learning experiences that are relevant and meaningful to learners by making connections between subjects, events and activities
•use a variety of teaching and learning approaches to engage and motivate learners, and to maximise impact on learning.
The future
What next?• Examine SoW + identify where cross-curricular
items can easily be added in esp. where there is a skills overlap e.g. use of ICT, numeracy, etc.
• Students taught to be creative with language• Some topics reviewed and delivered more
creatively• Thinking Skills / Numeracy / Literacy
