Frank Vaughn was my friend. We talked

several times a year. We laughed together. We shared difficult life stories. We both loved motorcycles. We both loved the Lord. He was my friend. But if I had ever run into him on the street or out in public somewhere I would not have known who he was. You see I met Frank through the magazine. We never had the opportunity to meet in person. I can hear him now, the unforgettable friendliness. “Hi Sherri! It’s Frank Vaughn!” his enthusiastic voice would sound across the telephone lines every few months over the years. Often if he caught me unavailable, the same phrase was on my voice mail. Always upbeat. Always with something interesting to tell me or a question to ask. Sometimes if I had the time available, we’d spend 20 or 30 minutes

on the phone. Frank would talk of motorcycles, the Bible, his late wife, his family. He’d listen when I shared challenges we were going through caring for my mom. He understood the fears brought on by her dementia. He once sent us a handmade gift. A gold and black etching of the 23rd Psalm he had made for us. He was patient. Sometimes it would take me weeks to return a voice mail he had left. But he always sounded happy to hear from me no matter how long it took. “I know you’re busy,” he’d say. In fact when I got the email from his grandson that he had passed away, I felt a pang of regret because he had left a message a few weeks earlier checking to see if his subscription was still current and I had not called him back yet. Frank was a special man. He shared with me on several occasions the care he gave to his wife in her final years of life. He left his job to devote himself full time to being her caregiver.. He said good-bye to his wife of 50 years in 2007 the same year we lost my mother-in-law. That shared grief may have even been the start of our telephone friendship. I remember him calling to talk about his loss and listening to his memories and his tales of the loneliness that followed her passing. I came very close to meeting Frank in person earlier this year. Knowing he lived near the Del Mar Fairgrounds, I had invited him to meet us at the motorcycle races in early March. Even though there were many weeks to go

before the race, he sounded excited about the prospect. It never occured to me when I didn’t receive his call on race day, that he had passed away just a few days earlier. His grandson wrote to me shortly after his passing with the news. I was honored to read his words about our friendship: “He spoke highly of

you and often of you.” It seems fitting to honor Frank Vaughn, our long-time subscriber, our friend, at the same time we celebrate the 33rd anniversary of the magazine. I like to think it’s one of the things that sets us apart from other publications. Our readers become friends. Whether it’s through pictures, emails, phone calls or a chance meeting at an off road event, you, who are reading this right now, are what it’s all about. Your joys and sorrows, your successes and failures, your good times and bad. The hope that we can make a difference through something we print or something we say or do, that’s the ultimate goal. Frank’s family summed up his life with these words: Simply stated, Frank was a good and kind person, an individual who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being a caring and giving person, someone who was a vital part of their lives. Frank leaves behind him a legacy of life-long friendships and many cherished memories. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Frank James Vaughn Jr. May that one day be said of all of us.

The importance of fathersSherri, I just read your article (June 2015) about fathers and their importance in the lives of their kids and their daughters particularly. I want you to know that I think you’re a very smart woman, well in touch with what’s important in life to be able to pen such an article. Very well done. Thank you. Without question, my two daughters (ages 14 and 20) are my life’s most important work. They are my (and my wife’s) deepest passion and I am so proud of the both of them. I can’t start a list because their many accomplishments could fill your next issue. I want to be their friend and mentor and share with them for the rest of my life. My very best to you and thank you and your husband as well for your work on the Thundering Trails program. John HicksMercersburg PA

Not sure about TrumpHi Sherri, I got my new issue today (September 2015) and as always I read Your Turn first, very good article and I agreed with most of it. I really appreciate

Trump’s enthusiasm and his positions on immigration, the economy, China, and some of his other issues. I don’t really trust that he has suddenly became a conservative. I don’t think I could vote for him in the primary but I would vote for any of the Republican candidates

(even Bush) in the Presidential election over any Democrat. I also enjoyed reading the Letters, The Endangered Off Roader, The Dunes Fight, 4x4 Coach, Dr. De Forest’s article, and looking at the Desert Toys. Haven’t read EPA Abuse yet but I will. Thanks for the great magazine.Rick MooreEl Cajon CA

Loved the Navigation Story Dear Editor, Or should I say, Sister?! The August issue of Sherri’s Turn was just too hilarious!!! I would have given anything to have been a fly in that truck. While reading that article, it reminded me of a recent trip we took up to Bountiful. We had our daughter and son-in-law in the back seat, and they were making fun of us as we were driving. You see, I had Map-quest directions and a map in my hand and was reading it to my husband. Even though we both have smart phones. And we have a GPS navigation system in the car that we never use. On our way back home, the son-in-law pulls out his phone and proceeded to ask Siri, “directions to

our house?” All we really needed was to get back on the freeway and we knew the way from there. So this past Friday, this daughter and our son-in-law are driving to Bear Lake for a mini vacation. I received a text message from her that reads, “Hahaha we missed our exit by 14 exits! Hahaha we suck at navigating.” Funny thing is they have 2 smart phone in their car and a GPS navigation system as well. Also, while reading the digital September issue of Sherri’s Turn, let me first say if it’s political or environmental, I usually don’t read it. But, since you told me you wrote about me in this issue, I decided to read it since my curiosity was piqued. Not a bad quote, thanks! However, I have come to the conclusion, as far as politics are concerned: I am making a promise to myself not to discuss them with you :)love, your sister West Jordan, UT E

Extend the Life of your RZR’s Air FilterS&B Filters, Fontana, Calif., with

over 40 years experience in the automotive industry, makes its

official debut in the off-road industry with the S&B Particle Separator for the Polaris 2012-16 RZR 900 and 2014-15 RZR 1000. This unique mod applies the same air filtration technology used by military

helicopters in dusty, desert terrain and works by removing 94% of dust from the airflow, so your filter will last over 15x longer. With your filter engulfing cleaner air, your UTV will perform stronger when other’s filters start to clog. Go further, faster and save money. Testing conducted in a climate controlled lab according to the ISO 5011 Test Procedure on a 2015 Polaris RZR 1000. Results may vary. Visit www.sbfilters.com for more info.

7th Annual NORRA Mexican 1000 Dates SetFeaturing nearly 1300 rugged miles

of endless valleys of cactus, silt laden plains, rocky canyons, with

panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez from Ensenada to San Jose del Cabo, the NORRA Mexican 1000 returns with a renewed commitment to its racers. This next April 23rd-27th 2016,

NORRA will once again make its way down the Baja peninsula. Over the years, this race has seen its fair share of changes from a Mexicali start to Ensenada to its finish in La Paz change to Cabo. Different formats have been implemented, but the spirit of this event remains unchanged. Attempting to manage the growing pains of an ever expanding event, NORRA has revised its category rules to further the spirit of the vintage racer while pushing the envelope for those wishing to race with the latest technological advancements. Six eras will be represented, defined primarily by the technology available when originally introduced. Each era will be awarded an overall trophy. Because this originally started as a vintage rally, homage needs to be paid towards vintage drivers as well as those racing the latest

and greatest. Therefore, there won’t be an overall trophy covering all categories. Here is a list of the eras: Pioneer, Legend, Challenger, Vintage, Historic and Evolution. Specific details on all of the categories available in each era can be viewed at www.norra.com.2016 Mexican 1000 Pre-Registration - NOW AVAILABLE! Pre-Registration became available September 15th and you can secure your spot and number for the 2016 NORRA Mexican 1000 with a $500 non-refundable deposit. Monthly payment plan option is available and once your entry is paid in full, you will be able to purchase your room in Bay of LA until they are sold out. American Ryan Sipes tops all riders at 2015 International Six Days EnduroThe United States sent 33 riders

to Kosice, Slovakia, Sept. 7-12, to compete against the best off-

road racers in the world at the 90th

International Six Days Enduro. For the first time in history, an American rider topped all individual scores at the historic event. Kentucky’s Ryan Sipes, competing in the E2 class, was the week’s fastest rider, beating Australia’s David Milner by 43 seconds for the best time overall. “Participating in the ISDE is a year-long commitment, and the riders, volunteers and sponsors who make that commitment have earned our gratitude and respect,” said American Motorcyclist Association Director of Racing Bill Cumbow. “The AMA thanks all these riders for their effort -- and especially recognizes the world championship performance of Ryan Sipes, who has accomplished what no other American rider has before him by winning overall individual honors at the world’s most prestigious off-road racing event.” This was Sipes’ second time competing at the ISDE and his first time racing in the World Trophy division. “It’s unbelievable, to be honest,” Sipes said. “I didn’t expect to be here, let alone at the top for most of the week. Everything about this week has been awesome. My bike has been awesome. Everything just went my way this week. It’s an incredible feeling.” Despite Sipes’ triumph, U.S. team results fell short of their early potential. Injuries, mechanical failures and even a provisional disqualification marred the team’s efforts. Of the four U.S. riders to retire before the end of this year’s Six Days, two were on the U.S. World Trophy Team and two were on the U.S. Junior Trophy Team.

In the final tally, the U.S. Trophy Team finished 22nd, and the U.S. Junior Trophy Team finished 13th. The U.S. Women’s World Trophy Team was fifth overall. The highest-placing U.S. club team was the GoFasters.com team, which finished fourth in the club division. Prior to losing any riders, the U.S. Trophy Team was in first place, and the Junior Trophy Team was comfortably on the podium with just three of four riders competing. “The outcome of this Six Days can be looked at like a bump on the road, as it takes more than speed to win,” said U.S. Team Manager Antti Kallonen. “We just need to stay healthy, keep our bikes running and hold it together. As a team,

VAMC Drie Musketiers from The Netherlands won the Club Team Award. In addition to Sipes, the U.S. World Trophy Team included Mike Brown, Thad Duvall, Taylor Robert, Kailub Russell and Gary Sutherlin. The U.S. Junior Trophy

Team included Grant Baylor, Steward Baylor, Nick Davis and Layne Michael. The U.S. Women’s World Trophy Team included Rachel Gutish, Mandi Mastin and Jamie Wells. The following companies supported the 2015 U.S. ISDE effort: Arai Helmets, Elizabeth Scott Community, Hall’s Cycles, Motion Pro, Spectro, ThermoProbe, Wellard and ZipTyRacing.com. The ISDE is the most prestigious off-road motorcycle event in the world. First held in Carlisle, England, in 1913, the ISDE is one of the longest-running events on the calendar of the Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme. A U.S. team has never won the World Trophy. It brought home the Junior Trophy in 1973, 1991, 2006 and 2014.

Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. is title sponsor of 2015 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction CeremonyThe American Motorcyclist

Association welcomes Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. as the title

sponsor of the Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony being held Saturday, Oct. 17, during the American International Motorcycle Expo at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla. “From the groundbreaking DT-1 to the Super Ténéré, from Bob Hannah to Wayne Rainey, Yamaha motorcycles and riders have made a profound impact on American motorcycling,” said AMA Chief Operations Officer Jeff Massey. “For the company to step up and support this year’s Hall of Fame induction ceremony in such a big way speaks volumes regarding Yamaha’s reverence for motorcycling’s history.” “Yamaha is truly honored to be the title sponsor of this year’s AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony with the inductions of longtime Yamaha icon Keith McCarty, rider John Kocinski, and Hall of Fame Legend honoree Wayne Rainey, all part of the event,” said Bob Starr, Yamaha general manager of motorsports communications. “And we could not think of a better way to celebrate the careers of these gentlemen and the 60th Anniversary of Yamaha Motor Company all on one stage!” Tickets to the Yamaha AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony are available now at www.motorcyclemuseum.org. Regular entry is just $25 per person. VIP tickets that include an exclusive reception, reserved seating and one-day AIMExpo admission are $90 per person. The Class of 2015 includes road racing champion John Kocinski, off-road racing champion Rodney Smith, former Harley-Davidson CEO Richard Teerlink, entrepreneur and industry patron John Parham, dirt tracker Alex Jorgensen and longtime Yamaha Motor Corp. U.S.A. race team manager Keith McCarty. The event also will honor Yamaha icon and three-time road racing world champion Wayne Rainey as the 2015 AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Legend. Rainey, who himself was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999, is the president of MotoAmerica, the new home of the AMA Superbike Championship. E

Maintaining the proper distance between your vehicle and the one ahead can be tricky. Speeds

vary, the terrain changes frequently, and visibility can drop quickly. You want to stay close enough to the vehicle in front so you can learn from it but not tailgate and risk causing an accident or worse: not be able to read the terrain for yourself. Even experienced drivers find it challenging to monitor trail conditions and nearby vehicles. Newer drivers tend to focus so much on the vehicle ahead

that they end up tailgating—in essence, glued to his backside. In the process, they lose sight of the trail and any obstacles or difficult conditions. More important they lose track of the vehicle behind, which can throw off the entire caravan.

Appropriate distance for safe off-road four wheeling As a rule of thumb, you should be far enough back to at least see the other guy’s rear differential. (If the differential is just visible above your hood, you’re about 17 feet away.) Any closer than that, and everything between you and the other vehicle is in a blind spot. You never see the difficult obstacles so you can pick a line. And you won’t have time to react if need be. Back off so you have a better view of the trail and obstacles ahead. Tailgating is a real problem on dusty roads—you can’t see squat. There could be a washout or deep rut up ahead, and you wouldn’t see it until it’s too late. As soon as you see the driver ahead kicking up dust, back off. Stay behind the dust cloud, and monitor that to determine how the other driver is responding to conditions ahead. (Another advantage to staying back is that you’ll be able to enjoy the scenery.)

You’re probably wondering, aren’t the drivers communicating with each other? Maybe, but maybe not. A good 2-way radio is indispensable in these

circumstances. That’s why I always require a 2-way radio in each vehicle during my off road trips. CB is fine, but I’ve found that FRS radios perform well. The lead driver lets everyone know of obstacles, blind curves, oncoming vehicles, and other issues. During my trips, I ask the last driver (my “tail gunner”) to acknowledge my broadcast. That way I know it’s been received properly. Any vehicle that didn’t hear my message will likely hear the follow-up transmission.

In addition to keeping an eye on the vehicle ahead, drivers should

occasionally glance in the mirror to make sure the trailing vehicle is still in view. If not, he should contact the driver. (Of course, it’s also

important for the driver in distress to speak up when he gets in a bind.) I can’t stress enough that you must keep your 2-way radio on and any distracting noises to a minimum. Turn down the

commercial radio and your iPod. You should be focused on the road ahead and any instructions coming over the 2-way radio. When you’re the lead driver, remind the others to keep their trailing vehicle in sight. If each driver does this, no one loses a vehicle when the driving gets tough. Even with reliable communications, verify that the trailing vehicle is still behind you after you take that fork in the trail or make some other change. Any drivers really focused on the obstacle just ahead can forget a set of instructions they heard moments before. Similarly, if your vehicle encounters a problem, make sure you get on the radio. The vehicles ahead and behind should stop. If everyone is looking out

for the guy behind, the entire caravan will soon stop. Address your problem, and resume the drive. It all boils down to teamwork and trust, with every driver knowing and adhering to protocol.

Advice for Parents on Children’s Healthy Computer Habits

Statistics show that at least 70 percent of elementary school students use computers. As a result of increased

usage, doctors of chiropractic (DCs) are treating more young patients suffering from the effects of working at computer stations that are either designed for

adults or poorly designed for children. To reduce the possibility of your child suffering painful and possibly disabling injuries, the American Chiropractic Association (ACA)

offers these tips: • If children and adults in your home share the same computer workstation, make sure that it can be modified for each child’s use. For instance, position the computer monitor so that the top of the screen is at or below the child’s eye level. • Make sure the chair at the workstation fits the child correctly. This can be achieved by placing an ergonomic back cushion, pillow or a rolled-up towel behind the small of the child’s back for added support. • The child’s knees should be positioned at an approximate 90- to 130-degree angle. This can be accomplished by placing a foot rest, stool or similar object underneath the child’s feet. • Limit your child’s time at the computer, and make sure he or she takes periodic stretch breaks during computer time. • Avoid dehydration to prevent muscles from tensing while at computer workstations. A healthy dose of water is four 8 ounce glasses daily. • Urge your child’s school to provide education on correct computer ergonomics and to install ergonomically correct workstations.

Ocotillo Wells At the last SDORC meeting we had Tina Robinson come talk about all the issues going on in Ocotillo Wells. Tina is a resource manager at Ocotillo Wells and is very knowledgeable about activities in the park. Turns out there are now four issues we are worrying about! She started off discussing the newest threat, geothermal power in the park. If you have been following off-road issues for a while, you might remember about nine years ago geothermal became a threat. Then superintendent Kathy Dolinar invited a number of OHV leaders (me included) to a meeting with Icelandic America. They talked about the great benefits of geothermal power and then announced that the BLM owns seven square miles of mineral rights inside the park, plus lots more east of Poleline Rd and they intended to develop it. Icelandic put in a geothermal test well just west of Poleline Rd, you can still see the well cap today. I later heard that the water was hot, borderline hot enough, and there was not enough hot water down there to make it worthwhile. So the project went away. A few months ago I heard that another test well was being worked on, this time by the geothermal company Ormat and it was along the dump road about halfway between Poleline and Highway 86. I hear that Ormat is now interested in developing goethermal in east Ocotillo Wells. So what is wrong with geothermal power production out there? First, it is a visual blight. To see how ugly these things are, just travel to the southeast side of the Salton Sea. Not only are these facilities ugly, they have pipes. Lots of overland pipes that lead from the main facility to the wells. Yes, I used plural with wells and pipes. A facility could have 25 wells and some not at all close to the main building. They could be a mile away, with pipes going over the ground (their preferred way). Pipes could be buried or routed over trails, but they would still be obvious. They also need transmission lines, big towers and lots of wires. Talk about destroying visual resources! We are watching this closely and will keep you posted. The Flat Tailed Horned Lizard is still an issue in OW and the region. A number of projects in Imperial County have had to get incidental take permits to continue their work. These are not cheap nor easy to get and can cost as much as $500,000! A group of concerned people are working together to try to optimize the situation. If the lizard gets

on the endangered species list, it will create big headaches for off-roaders in Ocotillo Wells. Right now, I believe Ocotillo Wells will still allow camping and riding like in the past. Don’t expect any special events, as getting an incidental take permit is just too difficult now. It is possible the park will get an ITP that allows events, but I am not holding my breath. We are watching

this very carefully. The lawsuit is still hanging in court, waiting for the plaintiff to make the next move. No news here. The general plan is continuing to move forward. You can go to planocotillowells.com to read the scoping summary and public comments. Some of the comments are pretty interesting, have a look if you are inclined.

Glamis Advisory meeting There is an advisory group to the BLM specifically about the dunes. They meet three to four times a year and I am a member of the group. The dunes have calmed down in the last year or so and problems are not that big out there. The BLM staff give reports on activities and they reported progress in a number of areas.

The restroom near Wash 10 was moved west a little ways. You may remember this one because there is a stop sign right by it. By moving the restroom, the stop sign can be eliminated, easing traffic flow. There has been chronic erosion along Wash Road from rain, particularly in the late summer monsoons. The BLM has come up with a solution. The material is called Geo-webbing. This material is like a net that is two inches tall when laid on the ground. It is spread out where the erosion takes place and is filled with soil. It holds the soil and the rubber material is not harmed by driving over it. Fees will not be going up next season. Also with fees, some of you who got annual passes last year found they fell apart when they got wet. The fee program vendor has a new improved sticker for the coming season that is much more durable. The BLM is embarking on a large scale paving project. This will take a few years, but will repair roads, add shoulders and add a loop to the end of Grays Well Road so RV’s can turn around. If you see them out there working, know it is for your benefit. You may know that the PMV has a new area set aside to protect it. Carsonite signs have been installed all around the area and the BLM have to have two full time workers whose sole job is to

mantain the signs around this area. This is because as the wind blows, some signs are buried, while others fall over when exposed. The one thing the BLM wants the most now is a new ranger station in the north dunes. The current station is made from trailers and is about 30 years old. On big weekends they may be working on medical cases in the same room arrested people are being processed. The committee and BLM are looking into ways to fund a new station. The BLM is looking for campground hosts. If you love the dunes and want to camp there with a purpose, they are looking for you. Contact the El Centro BLM office for details. Final Words The San Diego Off-Road Coalition is looking for someone to help with issues specific to the Cleveland National Forest. If you like Corral Canyon and would like to help with OHV issues, contact us at [email protected]. As always, we need you to go to www.sdorc.org and join SDORC as a paid member. If that is too hard for you, at least go to our site and PayPal us a couple bucks. We have expenses and we can do more to help off-roading when we have a few bucks in the bank. We know there are 100,000 registered off-road vehicles in San Diego County, about a half million when you include unregistered and street legal vehicles. If I could get $1 from each of you, oh, the things we could do to improve off-roading here.

This is my grandpa Roy Wentzel, yep… you guessed it, I was named after this great man. I wanted to share this circa 1970’s pic, due to my grandma and grandpa (Beth) Wentzel were the first ones to take me to the desert camping. I was around 6 or 7, and yes, they had motorized dune buggies back then (1965-66). Big o’l water pumpers, and 40 hp VW tunnel framed buggies. This is one of the buggies my grandparents owned. When our group went for a daily run, they were always the leader of the pack, they knew Ocotillo Wells like no one else. This is way before there were manicured roads and maps. This man could fix anything, and build anything and was a master craftsman with wood. Sure miss him. I’m sure he’s hammering nails somewhere in heaven (only 3 hits). - Roy Etheridge,

We are BS Sand and we are a small family owned and operated company out of Phoenix AZ that makes seats for all types of off-road vehicles. While the Side by Side industry is currently our biggest market, we also make seats for everything from Jeeps to sand buggies to trophy trucks. This vehicle is a Kawasaki Teryx that was built by Scott Estes in 2008 where it was

raced in the Baja 1000 that same year. After completely rebuilding the car after the Baja 1000 we were finally able to go racing again. In 2013 we took the car back down to the Baja to race in the SCORE series where we held a solid position of 6th place in our class for most of the year before having to drop out due to insufficient funding. In 2014 we decided to take the car to Rocky Point Mexico to race it in the SADR series which has slightly cheaper entry fees. We are currently sitting in the number one position in our class. - Judi Hagge, BS Sand

I have only been off roading for about a year and a half. I originally wanted a Toyota

X-Runner for drifting but I couldn’t fit a baby seat in the back so I purchased a Tacoma TRD Sport double cab with plans of lowering it. I bought 20” rims and low profile tires and started doing research on drop kits. While spending time on the Tacomaworld forum, I ran into the guys from Battle Born Toyotas (formerly Battle Born Tacomas ) and I asked if I could ride along on their next trail run. Austin, the founder of BBT agreed to let me ride shotgun in his truck when they went to Burrow Wash in Boulder City, Nevada. I had the best time that day and that changed my life forever! Within two months of going to Burrow Wash, I had sold my 20-inchers and bought some 17” off road wheels and all terrain tires along with a leveling kit. I started playing in the dirt by my house in preparation for my first trail run in my own truck. Eventually the time came for another BBT trail run and bonfire out at the Jean Dry Lake bed and I was fortunate enough to be able to go. That day I truly fell in love with the desert life. Since then, I have traded in my Prerunner Tacoma for a 2015 Trail Edition 4runner and I have been modifying it since I picked it up at the dealership. The wheels and tires from my Tacoma went directly on to the 4runner the day I got it. I’ve added light bars and storage drawers. I’ve upgraded the shocks while I save

for a lift kit and I even got my truck stuck in the mud before it had permanent tags on it. - Josh Bagwin, Las Vegas NV mud before it had permanent tags on it. -

Obama Bemoans Alaskan Climate Change While Showing Off His HUGE PlaneBy Blake Neff, Posted 9-01-15 President Barack Obama is eager to get across the message that climate change is endangering Alaska’s ecosystem, so he’s actively blogging his three-day trip through the state. But Obama’s blogging is sending another message: that he’s able to fly around in a very large plane. Twenty seconds in the video, Obama is seen disembarking from Air Force One, while the camera zooms out to take in the

plane’s immense size. “Alaskans are already living with the effects of climate change,” Obama says in his trip blog. “More frequent and extensive wildfires. Bigger storm surges as sea ice melts faster. Some of the swiftest shoreline erosion in the world — in some places, more than three feet a year. Alaska’s glaciers are melting faster, too — threatening coastal communities, tourism and adding to rising seas.” Obama believes this climate change is due to humanity’s significant output of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. Despite this, his blog extensively showcases Air Force One, a huge Boeing VC-25 that uses thousands of gallons of fuel every time it takes to the skies. At one point Monday, Obama photographed distant Mt. Denali (Mt. McKinley until it was renamed Sunday) from the air, showing off both the peak and Air Force One’s immense General

Electric CF-6 jet turbine, one of the four which collectively consumed almost 17,000 gallons of fuel (equal to what 33 cars use in a given year) getting Obama from Washington to Anchorage. Obama isn’t just visiting Anchorage, but also the cities of Dillingham and Kotzebue, both of which are hundreds of miles away and will require additional flights expelling thousands of pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere.

Fracking Ban Is Literally Impoverishing Rural TownsBy Michael Bastasch Posted 8-14-15 New York’s ban on hydraulic fracturing is great news for environmentalists, but horrible news for those living upstate who are seeing their economic opportunities fade as the state government closes the door on drilling. A recent report by the state comptroller found that while New York added 538,000 jobs between 2009 and 2014, virtually all of these jobs were concentrated in New York City. The Southern Tier, on the other hand, has been suffering. This is the region where most natural gas operations would be occurring had it been allowed by the state government. It didn’t, and now people are losing jobs and hope. “The Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, Central New York and North Country regions all experienced employment declines over the five years, with lower rates of total wage growth,” the comptroller’s report found, adding that overall labor participation in the region was falling as well.

Earlier this year, Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo finalized a state ban on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, over concerns it would contaminate

state water supplies and worsen air quality. Ironically,

Cuomo’s ban came after the federal EPA said there was no “evidence that [fracking activities] have led to widespread, systemic impacts on drinking water resources in the United States.” Cuomo’s fracking ban was supported by environmentalists and New York City-based B-list celebrities, like Yoko Ono and Mark Ruffalo. Fracking opponents celebrated the ban when it was finalized, but while they go back to their city condos, people actually living in the Southern Tier have to find ways to make ends meet.

“The Southern Tier is desolate,”Jim Finch, a supervisor for the upstate town of Conklin, told a local Fox News affiliate. “We have no jobs and no income. The richest resource we have is in the ground.” Finch and others have supported a movement among Southern Tier residents to secede from New York and become part of Pennsylvania, where fracking is lifting up local economies and lower income taxes have allowed businesses to thrive. The border between Pennsylvania and New York has been compared to the “Berlin Wall” because of the stark prosperity on one side, versus the economic stagnation on the other.

The Real Winner Of Obama’s ‘War On Coal’By Michael Bastasch Posted 8-19-15 The real winner of President Barack Obama’s so-called “war on coal” isn’t the EPA, nor is it the natural gas industry. It’s liberal billionaire George Soros. Last week, Obama’s EPA announced sweeping regulations for U.S. power plants, forcing them to drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions 32 percent by 2030. The news sent shockwaves through the coal industry, sending stocks tumbling and forcing the industry’s two biggest players to consider bankruptcy filings. That’s where liberal billionaire Soros steps in. In the days after the Clean Power Plan was announced, Soros bought more than 1 million shares of Peabody Energy and 553,200 shares of Arch Coal — the country’s two biggest publicly-traded coal companies.

Both Peabody and Arch Coal “have seen their market values plummet” due to “competition from cheap natural gas, new environmental regulations and a slowing export market,” according to SNL Financial. Soros was able to pick up these coal stocks on the cheap, in part, due to Obama administration regulations targeting coal-fired power plants and coal mines. Soros, the 29th richest person in the world, has been a major funder of liberal causes in the country. In 2009, he pledged to spend $1 billion of his own money backing green energy, and he also put funding behind the Climate Policy Initiative think tank, according to The Guardian. Most importantly, however, is that Soros has been a major financial backer of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton through his super PAC Priorities USA Action. The financial ties between

Soros and Democrats has some right-leaning commenters speculating about what all this means. “I posited that once

the existing coal industry ownership was wiped out by President Obama’s regulatory onslaught, a new politically correct ownership would rehabilitate the fuel by contributing to Democrats,” wrote Steve Milloy, an energy expert who runs the blog JunkScience.com. E

Round 8, August 15, 2015, Perris CA

SCFTA Championship Flat Track SeriesSouthern California Flat Track

Association’s round eight was a tribute and in honor of fallen racer, twenty-

nine year old Jethro Halbert. Mr. Halbert, the older brother of multi-time AMA Flat Track Champion, Sammy Halbert, was seriously injured at the Calistoga Half-Mile on September 27, 2014.

National Number Sixty-Nine, Mr. Halbert was in a coma for over ten months after his accident. He leaves behind his fiance Ashley, son Caleb, folks Willy and Shannon, and brothers Sammy, Zach and Andy Halbert. Mr. Halbert, a 2005 California Cup Champion, rode to several top ten and top five finishes across his AMA Grand National Championship competition spanning over ten years, with his best performance being a tie for the top five in the 2008 GNC Twins final standings according to the AMA website. S&S Off Road and this writer send their condolences and sympathies to his loving family. Succumbing to his inuries on August 5, SCFTA riders rode a reverse lap in tribute to Mr. Halbert. Sometimes racing needs to take a step back, but now we have time to fire it up for round eight of the 12 round series. We are now two third of they way through, and sound is still an issue with many bikes that needs to be resolved. Please do your best to quiet down your ride and feel free to ask assistance from SCFTA for help in dampening the volume. We need to get the show on the road, burning towards that curfew time you know. One-hundred and sixty-one entries fitted into twenty-seven Main events, let’s race. Three time AMA 250cc Grand Prix Champion (1987-89), 1990 250cc World Grand Prix Champion and 1997 Superbike World Champion, John Kocinski, graces the cushion of the Perris Raceway quite regularly and as champions tend to do, he wins, A LOT! He is undefeated in every race he ever competed in on the present track at Perris, and holds the track record with his Vintage air cooled 2-Stroke Honda at 14.03. Kocinski lays it low in his approach into the turns with a timely acceleration and feet up as he hits the

next turn. Foster Brothers Racing/Mr. Ed/Southland Racing’s Alex Crosby, has bloomed like a seasonal poppy and continues to luster with each passing year. Holding several titles over the past seasons, Crosby rises to each progressive class as he moves up the ladder. As the sun set and the Main events were ready to launch, there was a hush in the air. Racing in the Open Unclassified heat race, Kocinski lost his first race ever on the Perris loop with the culprit to blame in Crosby. There was a definite quiet anticipation as the Main approached, wondering if Crosby could repeat over Kocinski. Lining up for the Open Unclassified the race was to pit speedy young Crosby in the role as David, and Goliath was arguably one of the top American road racers ever, Kocinski. The race out of the gun had Kocinski coming off the chalk and looking like he had the holeshot as they reached turn one. Sitting on the pole, Crosby had one priority, get past Kocinski. With the grace of a linebacker on the ballet stage, Crosby bullied his way

into the inside of turn one muscling his way past Kocinski and the early lead in the Open Unclassified. Crosby had accomplished his first goal, to have the inside line, as he put it “on the pipe”. The pipe that forms the corner boundary, and getting as close to it as possible, Crosby rode his race, repelling successive charges, and a final lap surge by Kocinski. Alex Crosby, the first racer to beat Kocinski in a Main event at the current Perris track. Crosby and Kocinski first and second respectively, and James Ott third. Crosby raced to his second Main win of the night in

the Open Expert, he is currently second in the Open Expert points, and first in the Open Unclassified points. The heart and future lies in the SCFTA youth racers. One of those carrying the torch for racers of the distant future is Sierra Hickerson. The eleven-year-old also participates in Girl Scouts, Soccer and she likes to read. Forming her riding skills on trails and riding at places like El Mirage she has become a tenacious competitor on the flat. Coming up to speed she has engaged in several battles trading plastic racing in the 65-70cc Open and 65-70cc 4-Stroke Beginner. She likes to race against her friends like Isabella Mitchell and would like to thank Kawasaki of Simi Valley, and all her family. Returning back to Kocinski, he raced in the Vet +35 Expert heat but did not race the Main. Kocinski’s regular presence at Perris, emphasizes the greatness of the sport, how a typical fan can rub elbows with a soon to be AMA Hall of Famer and legendary road racer like Kocinski at a local race. Congratulations to Mr. Kocinski on his pending entrance to the

AMA Hall of Fame. To wrap up the Pro round eight, Race Tech’s Kayl Kolkman came in and foiled John Vanderlaan’s shot at three Pro Main wins in a row. Leading from start to finish Kolkman took the win, Vanderlaan second, Jeremy Toye with a well earned third in the Pro Main. Colt Foster holds the Pro series points lead by seven over Vanderlaan, Nick Gil is twelve points back in third. Please go to www.scftaracing.com for complete results and information on the remaining three rounds, October 11, November 14 the $10,000 Pro purse, and round twelve on November 15. Please go to www.vft.org/Memorial/JethroHalbert/JethroHalbert.html for information on Mr. Halbert.

Profile: Morgan TankeBY RODNEY RUTHERFORD

Observed Trials is a quiet introspective sport requiring focus, harmony with gravity (balance), and a sharp knowledge

of maneuvering techniques. Beta rider Morgan Tanke, was brought up by her avid moto dad Dale “Chip” and mom Diahann, in the sprawling city of Riverside. The rocky landscape that prevails in the bedroom city provides the perfect canvas for the young daughter of Dale and Diahnn. Waving her machine as her brush, incorporating the basics of Trials riding with pivot turning, splatting, clutch dropping, bike bouncing and throttle feathering, on her way to a perfect masterpiece of skill, fun and the winners circle. Morgan has been bolstered by her prolific athletic ability in any sport she chooses, which has crossed over well to the sport of observed Trials with its slow but intricate pace that requires uncanny timing and puts mental motor skills into overload. Morgan showed her aptitude for Observed Trials, winning a prestigious Trials “El Trial de Espana” title, before she was six years old. Morgan went on to win two Southern California Trials Association Championships on the larger bikes. Growing up in a moto family, rides to the desert were quite common, but the rocky

playground adjacent to her property, and a large cement slab that was once part of a chicken ranch, became her classroom of turns and handling as she seldom dismounted her small bikes. She made her way past the basic skills rapidly. As Morgan grew older she started to crave “the need for speed”, and was crossing over to other types of off roading like Grand Prix racing, and into Endurocross which is a natural transition from Trials. Endurocross, an indoor stadium friendly off road motorcycle discipline, is a cross of Trials riding, Supercross, and Enduro racing. An Endurocross track looks like a trials course with rock fields, boulders, log crossings, water crossings and the like. Endurocross was the perfect fit for Morgan with her slow speed skills honed by over ten years of Trials riding. Entering her first Endurocross race in 2012 and her first time on a starting gate, she did not qualify but she found her newest calling. Exemplifying her fearlessness and unrelenting tenacity to get the job done, she explained that she did not even think about the starting gate although it was her first time on one. Her focus was winning and it has not wavered. Racing in the 2013 SRA Grand Prix series at Glen Helen Raceway, Morgan went on to win the Woman’s Title. The 2013 Endurocross series in the Woman’s Pro saw Morgan with her best finish being a third in round three and finishing third overall in the final points. In the 2014 Endurocross series, Morgan put her hand in the game and rolled out round one with a third, she furthered her position in the field as a valid title contender with her first Endurocross event win coming at round two in Sacramento. She raced on to a second at rounds four and six respectively, finishing up with her second consecutive third in the final standings. She also raced to a win at round three of the 2014 World Off Road Championship series (WORCS) Woman’s “A” at Lake Havasu. On November 12, 2014, Miss Tanke received news that most elite women off road racers can only dream about. She was awarded a factory ride from Italy’s Beta Racing, with its U.S.A. headquarters in Paso Robles, California. In less than three months she put herself and Beta Motorcycles on the moto-map, becoming one of the first two women to finish the arduous King of the Motos at Johnson Valley in February, teaming up with Rachel Gutish to finish right next to her for 40th and a piece of history. Tanke will be racing a Beta 300cc Cross

Trainer for the remainder of the series, after beginning the 2015 Geico Motorcycle Endurocross series on a Beta 250RR. Winning round one, Morgan looked great to win round two at Salt Lake while leading with less than a lap left, but she was hit by another racer breaking her wrist, regardless she finished up third in the round. She currently stands third in points, seven points behind the leader with six rounds remaining, a healthy wrist and plenty of time to race into the 2015 title. After racing the John Burr Cycles Ten-Hour Endurance with her buddy Tatum Sik and winning the Open Novice class with a 12th overall finish, She now has aspirations to solo the 24-Hour sometime in the future. At eighteen years of age and born on festive New Year’s Eve, no telling how far Morgan will go as she ventures beyond her limits and goes full tilt boogey into the off road unknown. Her sponsors include Beta Racing, FMF, Kenda, Stillwell Performance, HBD, Motul, Fox Racing Shox, Funnel Web, EarthX, Talon, Fastway, Rekluse, ODI, ARC, Enduro Engineering, G2 Dynamics, Motion Pro, Dubya, Works Connection, Samco, IMS, Unibiker, Moto Seat, Hyde, Mylers, DID, Motorcycle Superstore, Alias, Kicks, Allsport Dynamics, DA8 Training, Icon sports performance. She would also like to thank her dad and mom and sister Nickole. She expreses appreciation to Destry Abbott and Tatum Sik for all their tips and advice. Morgan will be racing the Endurocross series, selected WORCS races, selected Big 6 races, and wherever her spirit takes her!

T he enduring Moto X Kidz series, and its benevolent motocross

promotion with TLC (tender loving care), continues to introduce new racers and their parents to the sport of motocross. No question is deemed unnecessary, and assistance is provided with the utmost care and knowledge provided by MX-Kidz promoter Kevin Reno

and his helpful staff. This round five of the six round MX-Kidz Gold Cup Summer series, was held at the formerly named, Starwest MX Park, now called The West MX. Offering classes from 50cc to 85cc, there are twenty-one divisions and over seventy-five entries ready to get their green flag on for this round five. We have an inter-class race with the 50cc 2-Stroke (4-6) Open, and the 50cc 2-Stroke (7-9) Open featuring David Timewell, Cale Skillman, Harlem Nelson and Andrew Velasquez. Nelson jumps to the front of the five lap Main with Velazquez and Timewell pushing

hard from the second and third position respectively. Timewell

ratcheting up his race revving hard, laying into the petrol as he exits the corner in a cloud of roost now in second on lap three and two seconds behind Velazquez. Timewell assaulting the dirt in full force, barging his way to the front on the final lap for the moto one

win, Velazquez second, and Nelson third. Nelson off to the front, but with a tiger like aggression, Velazquez was bringing the heat and ready to singe Nelson. Railing a berm on the outside, Velazquez swoops his way around Nelson for the front on lap three. Coming across for the count of lap three, Velazquez slides out on the cusp of the finish line jump. Nelson with Timewell in his draft now first and second respectively. Timewell puts it to town and rolls into the big lights with the lead on lap four, gapping out for the moto two win. Nelson holds on to second, but not after a scrap with Cale Skillman, who settled for third. The top three in the 50cc (7-9) Open are Timewell (1-1), Nelson (3-2), and Velazquez (2-4) salvaging a third overall. Timewell also won the 50cc 2-Stroke Advanced (7-9) overall. MX-Kidz racer, Tristen Ybarra, has secured several MX-Kidz titles over the previous series, and looks like he prefers nothing but winning. Ybarra hit high velocity with the holeshot in moto one of the, 65cc (THRU 12). Ybarra leading with a slight buffer over Carson Lind on lap two, Frederick Pinney in third with Zack Lake nipping at his knobbies in fourth. Ybarra running comfortably in front but with the white flag denoting the last lap, Lind comes alive. Running in hard on Ybarra, Lind was all over him on the last lap trying to take that win. Located in the hamlet of Boulevard in the far-east county of San Diego, next to Interstate 8, 212 Land MX Park staged its first-ever vintage motocross event

with promotion by the region’s top vintage racing organization, CALVMX. Superlative collaboration between 212’s track manager, Austin Prida and the staff of CALVMX produced a well-designed course suitable for both vintage and post-vintage machines. The combined effort garnered positive feedback from the competitors. Many riders were heard to say it was one of the best courses they’ve ridden in recent years. Over 100 entrants attended 212’s first ever endeavor with vintage racing. It was definitely the first time so many machines from the bygone era of motocross filled the pit area of what is usually the domain of modern bikes. Showing he is equally adept on two wheels as he is when he and wife Katherine team up on their sidecar outfit, Mark Wood (CZ) used 1-2 scores in the 50 Plus Vintage

Expert division to take the overall win. In moto one, Wood leapt out of the starting gate and was near the front of the combined pack of experts, intermediates and novices powering their way up the starting hill. At the end of lap one, Wood led Arizona based Kevin Temple (Kaw), Brent Wilkinson (Suz) and Rick Guilmette (CZ). The sandy loam of 212’s track proved ideal for Wood as he maintained his lead throughout the moto. Behind Wood, Temple held onto second, with Wilkinson and Guilmette vying for third. At the checkers, it was Wood taking the win, followed by Temple and Wilkinson. Wood snared another good start in the second moto, only this time

Guilmette was following close behind. The two CZ pilots battered

the track without let up as they

vied for the top

spot. Midway thru lap four, Guilmette powered into first, with Wood mere bike lengths behind. Guilmette would lead till the checkers for the win, followed by Wood and Wilkinson. Wood’s runner-up finish clinched the overall victory, with Guilmette snaring second, and Wilkinson third. It was a battle of classic European brands in Vintage Sportsman 250 Intermediate, between the CZ of Tim McIntyre and the Maico of series regular Norm Himaka. The start of moto one saw Himaka emerging with the lead followed by McIntyre and David Perrapato (Husqvarna). Throughout the moto, Himaka used the famous handling and power of his German machine to good effect as he continually denied McIntyre’s challenges. Himaka went on to take the moto win followed by McIntyre and Perrapato. The start of moto two saw McIntyre power his way to the front, followed by Himaka and Jim Barker (Hon). Himaka kept the pressure on McIntyre during the early laps of the race, with Barker nestled in third. Near the end of moto, McIntyre began to put a slight gap between himself and the rest of the pack to finish with an unchallenged win, followed by Himaka in second, with Barker third. McIntyre’s 2-1 scores gave him the overall win, with Himaka second and Perrapato’s 3-4 tally good for third overall. Other class winners on the day included Carmen Cafro (Suz) in GP-1 500 Expert, Dallas Brown

Mike Tripes (Hon) absolutely dominated both moto’s in 50 Plus GP Expert for the overall followed by Cafro and Kirk Chapman (KTM). Making a welcomed return to action was Phil Hall (CZ) who had been sidelined for over a year with a medical condition. Hall celebrated his return with a win in 60 Plus Vintage Expert. The 8:00 a.m. drivers meeting was the start of the fifth race of the Triple Crown 2015 Autoproductos series

presented by ZR Promo. At 8:15 a.m. the checkered flag fell for the first 90 minute heat for motorcycles. The first row was the Pro class and Dustin Mc-Carthy got the holeshot followed by Schuyler Schoonmaker. Two miles later Justin Morgan moved into second place on his YZF450 with Schoonmaker in third, followed by the rest of the pro class plus the experts, +40, +50, +30 and rookies. McCarthy came through in first after the first round followed by Morgan, Sam-uel Montal-van, WORCS racer Michael Delfante and Schoonmaker behind him. On lap two McCarthy dropped the bike, suffering a wrist injury. At the end of 90 minutes Morgan had completed six laps witih Motalvan behind him, Delfante in third. At 10:30 the quad racers left the

line and Javier Robles took the holeshot, never looking back. Second in class was local Ivan Fran-cisco while Julio Jr. Band rode his TRX to third. At the end of the day the top three in each class received awards and expressed gratitude for their sponsors and friends who helped them. Thanks to Hector Inunzo who brought gifts from South Bay Motorsports and Roberto Verber of MotogearMX who also brought gifts and distrib-uted them among the winners!

From the Racers:Dustin McCarthy: My race started good. I was able to pull the holeshot and break away a little bit. About a lap and half in I could see Justin Morgan behind me and we started getting into lappers.

I started to ride a little bit tight and eventually made a mistake and had a small crash in which I landed on my previously injured wrist. I continued to ride but my wrist was getting mroe and more sore as I continued on so I decided to play it safe and pull off to preserve my wrist for the next race.

Michael Delfan-te: Wow, what a race! Definitely did not know

what to expect heading down to Mexico for the first time, and I must say that my expectations were blown away. I had an absolute blast racing the Santa Ve-ronica GP in Tecate over the weekend.

Justin Mor-gan: I had a great time at the ZR hare scramble. As always we were up against a dif-ficult course that tested all of your off road skills. Rene puts a lot of effort

into his races and everybody is always smiling at the finish line. I can’t wait

until the next one.

2000 Yamaha WR400 street legal Original owner. Purchased new from Yamaha dealer in El Cajon in 2000. I was 49 yrs old when I bought it. Ridden mainly on multi-day trips in Baja once or twice a year. Maintained carefully for maximum reliability. I’m a lot older now, just had two hip replacements, and think my dirt riding days may be over. I would guess the bike has 3000 total miles on it. I have not started it in

over a year. It ran great when it last ran. Many expensive upgrades including the following: Street legal kit installed by Baja Designs just before it became impossible to legally do it to green sticker bikes. Current street plate and green sticker. Suspension set up for me (220 lbs riding desert and Baja) by Precision Concepts (Bob Bell), including new springs. Fluids changed three or four times since original setup. FMF aftermarket full exhaust system. Stock exhaust available also. Scotts steering damper, with post professionally welded to frame (so it is reliable). Scotts top handlebar clamp. Applied Racing triple clamps (upper and lower). DID X-ring chain. Steel rear sprocket. Scotts alumi-num rear disc guard and brake guard. A real strong aluminum skid plate - don’t remember the brand. Works Connection aluminum guards where your boots rub on the sides of the frame tubes above the footpegs. Acerbis aluminum front fender support. Renthal bars. Bar risers. Tall seat kit. Acerbis hand protectors on bars. Wolfman tank bag and Malcolm Smith rear fender bag. A few extra air filter elements and other miscella-neous parts. Original Owners Manual. Aluminum radiator guards, rather than stock plastic. Upgraded plastic front fork leg and disc guards. Other stuff I don’t remember. The only thing wrong with it I know of is that the rear disc brake probably needs bleeding. $1450 You can send email to [email protected] or call 619-691-1400 during regular business hours
