    Mentoring and Modeling

Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.~ Proverbs 27:17

    Introduction:

If you are planting for a year, plant grain. If you are plating for a decade, plant trees. If you are planting for a century, plant people.

    ~ Old Chinese Proverb

As Christians, we are planting for eternity! For all the thousands whoare eager to share their knowledge and skills with others, there are just a

handful who are willing to share their LIVES, who are willing to betransparent, vulnerable and open about their successes and their failures, their joys and their pain, their faith and their doubts ~ Ron Lee Davis

Some history behind the termmentor. Itdoesnt appear in the Bible.Comes for the name of a character in Homers Odyssey. In this ancientGreek tail, King Odysseus of Ithaca entrusted his only son, Telemachus, tothe care and training of his wife friend, Mentor, while he himself went off towar. In the character of Homers Mentor, we find the ingredients ofwisdom, caring, and commitment to train this young man for his master.

It would be rare indeed to find a success in the poplitical, business, athletic, or social world, that didnt train under somone else. Yet, asparents and teachers, we tend to guard our privacy, not wanting thosewatching to know us too well. We seem content to impress from adistance, which is easily done, but hesitate to impact up close, which iswhat our Lord exemplified for us in His life and ministry.

Jesus transformed the world, because he poured His life into the 12.Though He preached to the masses, He invested Himself in the few, knowing that they would invest themselves in others and thus transformthe world. If we want to transform our lives then we must discover what itmeans to pour our lives into individuals. We must learn to spend moretimes with the few. We must learn to live for the next generation. We mustbecome mentors.

This principle is found in Proverbs 27:17, Iron sharpeneth iron; so aman sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. We also see this principle inpractice in the life of Moses to Joshua, Naomi to Ruth, Ezra to Nehemiah,Elijah to Elisha, Elisabeth to Mary, Barnabas to Paul and John Mark, Paulto Timoth, Priscilla, and Aquilla, and Aquilla to Apollos.

We are commanded in Matthew 28:19-20 to Go ye therefore, andteach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son,

and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to bserve all things whatsoever Ihave commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end ofthe world. This mandate cannot be misunderstood: Evangelize-Baptize-Disciple! We must win people to Christ by telling them the Good News ofhte Gospel, baptize those converts, and then begin the life-long process ofteaching!

John Milton Greagory says, True teaching, then, is not that whichgives knowledge, but that which stimulates pupils to gain it. To meaningsof hte word teaching are involved, one, simply telling, the other creating theconditions of real learning. The root meaning of hte word educate is todraw out rather than to fill with facts.

When Jesus taught the disciples about being a servant, He not onlygave them a verbal lesson, he also washed their feet. He taught them withmore than words-he immersed them in the very experiences of His life.

We have neatly packaged our ministry into sermons, lessons, assignments, and session. We are irritated when our schedule isinterrupted by people with problems, questions, and needs. We havebecome masters at managing, but miserable at mentoring.

Paul said to Timothy in I Timothy 4:16 to Take heed unto thyself andunto the doctrine; continue in them: for in doing this thou shalt both savethyself, and them that hear thee. Proper doctrine is important and wemust equip ourselves to teach the truths of Gods word, but it is interestingthat Paul first tells Timothy to take heed unto himself! The Christian life isnot just about doctrine and dogma--its about character--Christ-likecharacter!

Its time to shift our thinking about what ministry is all about. Itsmore than neatly designed lesson plans and smooth-running activities--itsabout PEOPLE! People that God has entrusted to us to mentor!

Teddy Stallard certainly qualified as one of the least. He was disinterested inschool, must, had wrinkled clothes, his hair never combed. He was one of the those

kids in school with a deadpan face, expressionless-sort of a glass, unfocused stare. When Miss Thompson spoke to Teddy, he always answered in monosyllables.Unattractive, unmotivated, and distant, he was just plain hard to like. Even though histeacher said she loved all in her class the same, down inside she wasnt beingcompletely truthful.

Whenever she marekd Teddys papers, she got a certain perverse pleasure outof putting Xs next to the wrong answers, and when she put the Fs at the top of hispapers, she alwasy did it with a flair. She should have known better; she had seenTeddys records, and she knew more about him than she wanted to admit. The recordsread:

1st Grade: Teddy shows promise with his work and attitude, but poor homesituation.

2nd Grade: Teddy could do better. Mother is seriously ill. He receives little helpat home.

3rd Grade: Teddy is a good boy but too serious. He is a slower learner. Hismother died this year.

4th Grade: Teddy is very slow, but well behaved. His father shows no interest.Christmas came, and the boys and girls in Miss Thompsons class brought her

Christmas presents. They piled their presents on her desk and crowded around towatch her open them. Among the presents was one from Teddy Stallard. She was

surprised that he had brought her a gift. Teddys gift was wrapped in brown paper andwas held together with scotch tape. On the paper were written the simple words, ForMiss Thompson from Teddy. When she opened Teddys present, out fell a gaudyrhinestone bracelet with half the stones missing and a bottle of cheap perfume.

The other boys and girls began to giggle and smirk over Teddys gift, but MissThompson at least had enough sense to silence them by immediately putting on thebracelet and putting some of the perfume on her wrist. Holding her wrist for the other

children to smell, she said, Doesnt it smell lovely? And the other children, taking theircues from the teacher, readily agreed with oohs and aahs.

At the end of the day, when school was over and the other children had left,Teddy lingered behind. He slowly came over to her desk and said softly, Miss

Thompson...Miss Thompson, you smell just like my mother...and her bracelet looks realpretty on you, too. Im glad you like my presents. When Teddy left, Miss Thompsongot down on her knees and asked God to forgive her.

The next day when the children came to school, a new teacher welcomed them.Miss Thompson had become a different person. She was no longer just a teacher; shehad become an agent of God. She was now a person committed to loving her childrenand doing things for them that would live on after her. She helped all the children, butespecially the slow ones, and especially Teddy Stallard. By the end of hte school year,Teddy showed dramatic improvement. He had caught up with most of the students andwas even ahead of some.

She didnt hear from Teddy for a long time. Then one day, she received a notethat read:

Dear Miss Thompson, I wanted you to be the first to know.I will be graduating second in my class.Love, Teddy Stallard

Four years later, another note came: Dear Miss Thompson, They just told me I will be graduating first in my class. I wanted you to be the first

to know. The university has not been easy, but I liked it. Love, Teddy Stallard

And four years later: Dear Miss Thompson, As of today, I am THeodore Stallard, MD. How about that? I wanted you to be the first to know. I am getting married next month, the 27th to be exact. I want you to come and sit where my mother would sit if she were alive. You are the only family I have now; Dad died last year. Love, Teddy Stallard

Miss Thompson went to that wedding and sat where Teddys mother would havesat. She deserved to sit there; she had done something for Teddy that he could neverforget.

If I had my life to live over again, I would live it to change the lives of

people, because you have not changed anything until youve changed thelives of people. ~ Missionary Warren Webster

Some Practical Ways to Mentor and Model the Next Generation:1. Make Excellent Choices

Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him itis sin. ~ James 4:17

Gods goal for his people is conformity to His Son (Romans 8:29). Ifour goal is anything less then our children will be destroyed by oursinful mediocrity.

    2. Knowledge is not the goal, a relationship with Christ is.

Knowledge alone puffeth up (I Corinthians 8:1) A knowledge of theGospel will not save anyone.

We can only have a relationship with Christ as we are obedient to Him.3. Be what you want your children/disciples/students to be

In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works. ~ Titus 2:7

We are to be examples....not of perfection, but of a process. We are tobe models with whom others can identify. God has called us, not tomodel perfection, but to model redemption. We are to be living

demonstrations, not of how good we are, but of how good God is.You have to be different to make a difference. You cannot change

anything by adding more of the same.4. Be Consistent

Show me a leader who is great in public and I will show you a leaderwho is even greater in private.

    5. Love. As a leader you need to love

And of some have compassion, making a difference.~ Jude 22

Accept people right in the midst of their struggles. The very minimumwe should do as mentors for those following us, is to guarantee, that

we are there for them, that we will unconditionally accept and lovethem. (By the way, I believe thats the guarantee God has given us.)

No one cares how much you know; until they know how much youcare.

    6. Always go forward

    6/9

Therefore my beloved brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, alwaysabounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that yourlabour is not in vain in the Lord. ~I Corinthians 15:58

The ministry of mentoring is not a sprint-its a marathon. Rememberwe are making people, not popcorn.

    7. Have a vision for your children

When you see your daughter dont see a 7 year old who will be eightnext year . . . see a daughter that is halfway to getting her license, whois a 1/3 of the way being done in your house, who is going to getmarried in a few short years, who will sooner than you realize beingraising your grandchildren . . . what do you want that to look like? What kind of wife would you like her to be? What kind of worker willshe be? Will she read her bible daily? Will she have a walk with God?Will she be sweet? Will she be moody?

Expectation is a powerful tool . . . many young people fail todaybecause thats what everyone around them expects-failure. I dontexpect the teens here to go through a rebellious stage. I dont expectthe young children to bail on church when they get into the teengroup. I expect teens who love God and this church. I expect them toturn into adults that serve God faithfully, that walk with God, that raisetheir children to do the same.

Weve got to dream for them! We must see them being a successbefore they do! As mentors we are trying to facilitate change, growthand progress, but we have to have an idea of what the finishedproduct is going to look like.

Disney park wasnt finished until Walt Disney passed away. One of theexecutives said, Its too bad Mr. Disney never saw this. Anotherreplied, He did. Long before any rides were constructed and anytickets were sold, Walt Disney had seen the finished product in hismind.

    8. Use a trials to train

Dont baby a person when they are in a trial. Love them, sure but helpthem grow. God wants to use this trial to make them more like Him,

dont hinder His work in their life by babying them. The Chinese ideogram for crisis consists of two characters: one which

means danger, and the other which means opportunity. Oftenwhen trials come into our lives, we see the danger, but fail torecognize the opportunity.

    7/9

We often view failure as final, and the trials in our lives becomestumbling blocks instead of the stepping stones that God intendedthem to be. Life is not perfection - its progression.

    9. Serve God and others

Mentoring and Modeling must include both preaching and practice, instruction and involvement, explanation and exercise.

The whole purpose of the mentoring process is to reproduce servants.

There is joy in serving Jesus!

Being an example in service requires time and sacrifice. But if wearent willing to lead, who is going to follow?

If every christian at JPBC served as much as you do, what kind ofministries would we have? Would we be a thriving church? I thinkeveryone member ought to minister and every saint is saved to serve!

10.Never tell what you can show or ask.

    Use questions.Use personal experiences.

    Use the bible.

Dont tell them the answer, give them the tools to find it on their own.

When people hear themselves saying the answer it becomes morepowerful because it is personal. Nothing is dynamic until it is personal!

Mentoring our children/students/disciples etc. to the point Godwants them to be is worth it! The rewards are out of this world! It must firststart with modeling the right way to live! But dont wait until youre perfectto start! Let people see how you fail and how Gods grace gets youthrough and makes you more like Him in the process! Be transparent withpeople! Let them see you and all the while point them to Jesus Christ, theOne who can truly make a difference in their life!
