QUOTE OF THE

DAYIn Salman Khan case, ineptitude on one side, wrong interpretation on the other

Take your pick. Choice One: No one was driving the car. Choice Two: Salman Khan has the world’s first Google self-driving car. Choice Three: The car was drunk. The facetiousness hides one stark fact: The high court judg-ment absolving Salman of all charges is a travesty of justice. If you look at the judgment, the court did deliv-er a “guilty” verdict. Only, it was not against the Bolly-wood superstar. The court pronounced “guilty” for the police and the prosecution team of lawyers. The police, according to the court, did a shoddy job of investiga-tion, while the prosecuting lawyers did a poor job of presenting their case. But as I understand the laws of contempt, it is permissible to criticise a judgment on the basis that the interpretation of the evidence was erroneous. In this case, in my opinion, it was grave-ly erroneous. The accident involving Salman’s Toyota Land Cruiser took place in September 2002. One per-son was killed and three badly injured. The people in the car were Salman himself, singer Kamaal Khan, and police constable Ravindra Patil, who was assigned the duty of being Salman’s bodyguard. Then, suddenly in March, after a full 13 years and just before the sessions court’s judgment, a certain Ashok Singh came forward to say that he was also in the car. Not only that, but he was driving it! It turned out that he was the Khan fam-ily driver for many years. The sessions court dismissed this out of hand when it pronounced Salman guilty and sentenced him to five years in jail. But the high court accepted the defence contention that Ashok Singh was not a desperate afterthought. Commonsense tells you if Ashok Singh was indeed driving the car, he would be the defence’s first witness, not its last. On the other side, Patil was the prosecution’s star witness. He had said in testimony recorded before a magistrate that not only was Salman driving, but that he was drunk. Un-fortunately for the prosecution, Patil died well before the trial. His death was in peculiar circumstances — he was dismissed from the police and died in poverty. Isn’t it strange that the prosecution’s star witness was so mistreated by the police, instead of being protected and kept safe and healthy for the trial? That in itself is a subject matter for a separate inquiry. That apart, the sessions court found his recorded testimony reliable, while the high court found it not “entirely reliable”, whatever that means. Surely the fact that the defence didn’t summon Kamaal as their witness is clear indica-tion that his testimony would have favoured the pros-ecution, perhaps confirming that Salman was driving the car?And so it goes: Ineptitude on one side, wrong interpretation on the other. The beneficiary: Salman Khan. The loser: Our justice system.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” shattered the domestic box office record with an estimated $238 million in U.S. and Cana-dian ticket sales through Sunday, a staggering de-but that re-established the celebrated space saga as a global phenomenon un-der Walt Disney Co. The first “Star Wars” film in a decade took in a total of $517 million at box offices around the world, second only to the dinosaur film “Jurassic World”, which had the benefit of an open-ing weekend that includ-ed China, where “Force Awakens” won’t open for weeks. Financial and crit-ical success for the film mark a victory for Disney Chief Executive Bob Ig-er’s strategy of acquiring

proven brands, including Pixar Animation and com-ic book powerhouse Mar-vel, to fuel Disney’s enter-tainment empire. Disney purchased “Star Wars” producer Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012 and is bet-ting that big-budget films can draw customers even as viewers gravitate to online streaming and mo-bile viewing and theater attendance declines. Over the weekend, fans rev-eled in the chance to visit the “Star Wars” galaxy for the first time in a de-cade. Filmgoers dressed as Jedi or Sith, carried lightsabers and cheered when classic characters such as Princess Leia or Chewbacca appeared on screen. Theaters added showtimes to meet de-mand, Disney said. “Ju-

rassic World” opened in June with $208.8 million in the United States and Canada and a take of $525 million worldwide. “Force Awakens” is the seventh installment in the epic science-fiction fran-chise created by George Lucas in 1977. Disney plans four “Star Wars” movies through 2019, plus major expansions at its U.S. theme parks to incor-porate the droids, space-ships and otherworldly creatures of the universe Lucas invented. “Force Awakens” toys, clothing, home accessories and vid-eo games already pervade stores ahead of Christmas. Nostalgia, plus a carefully planned, months-long re-lease of film trailers and character profiles boosted interest.

Air France: Suspicious device on flight was a hoax

Japan’s Toshiba Corp said on Monday it will cut nearly 7,000 consumer electronics jobs after a USD 1.3 billion accounting scandal, in an overhaul that will streamline the sprawling conglomerate into a company focused on chips and nuclear energy. Toshiba also said it would sell its television man-ufacturing plant in Indonesia, and that eventual job cuts spanning the entire PC-to-nuclear compa-ny could be over 10,000 including previously an-nounced cuts and those seeking voluntary early re-tirement. Due to restructuring costs, which include the sale of its Indonesian TV plant, Toshiba said it expected a net loss of around 550 billion yen (USD 4.53 billion) in this fiscal year ending in March. “By implementing this plan, we would like to regain the trust of all stakeholders including shareholders and transform ourselves into a robust business,” it said in a statement. Toshiba confirmed in August that it overstated profits going back to fiscal 2008/09 by

IndiGo shares fell as much as 5.50 per cent on Monday after the low-cost carrier on Saturday said there is no clear visibility about the delivery of A320 neos as delivery of the first aircraft has been delayed by Airbus due to “industrial reasons”. Earlier, the first A320 neo was to be delivered to IndiGo on December 30. At 1.45 pm, the share price of IndiGo was trading nearly 5 per cent down at Rs 1,086.75. The scrip opened at Rs 1,140 and had touched a high and low of Rs 1,157.75 and Rs 1,080, respectively, in trade so far. Sensex was up 160.69 points at 25,679.91 In a BSE filing, the com-pany said, “At this time IndiGo does not have clear visibility of its future A320 neo delivery schedule and the potential for additional delays exists. We are looking at mitigating the potential shortfall in capacity through other options.” As per the original plan, IndiGo was to induct 10 A320 neos in the cur-

The suspicious device discovered in the bathroom of an Air France flight was a hoax, the CEO of Air France said on Sunday. The Boeing 777 was head-ing to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris from Mauri-tius when its pilots requested an emergency landing early Sunday at Kenya’s coastal city of Mombasa. The device was made of cardboard, paper and a household timer, said Frederic Gagey, the head of Air France. “This object did not contain explosives,” said Gagey at a news conference in Paris. Gagey congratulated the crew for their cool-headed reaction to divert the plane. A safety check was carried out in the bathroom before the flight, he said. He denied any security failure in the flight, saying that passen-gers are checked and sometimes double-checked on flights. Six passengers are being questioned over the incident, said a Kenyan police official, who is part of the investigation and who insisted on anonymity because he is not authorised to speak to the press.

It is the first time in 55 years that a team has scored 10 goals in a La Liga game, howev-er, the Madrid fans still voiced their disapproval towards under fire coach Rafael Benitez after Real found themselves 2-1 down inside 12 minutes. Red cards inside half an hour for Tito and Raul Baena opened the flood-gates, though, as a double from Cristiano Ronaldo and a hat-trick for Karim

I am not going to judge the decisions of the ref-eree, but from the send-ing-off the team did what it had to do, try to play well and score goals.” Madrid president Floren-tino Perez had restated his support for Benitez in midweek after rumours suggested he was one de-feat away from the sack after losing 1-0 at Villar-real last weekend.

India’s batting all-rounder Yuvraj Singh on Sunday said he needs to grab hold of the opportunity that will come his way playing against Australia in the T20 internationals next month. The 34-year-old who was in town for the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K run has been selected for the T20 matches but will not feature in the One Day Internationals (ODI) that Australia will play during their January 12-31 In-dia tour. Suspended Fifa presi-dent Sepp Blatter and European football boss Michel Platini were both banned from soccer for eight years on Monday by the Ethics Committee of football’s global gov-erning body. The pair, who were also fined, had been suspended for 90 days in October while an

investigation was carried out into a 2 million Swiss franc ($2.02 million) pay-ment by Fifa to Platini in 2011. Both men denied any wrongdoing. The de-cision, which comes as a corruption scandal swirls around Fifa, means that Blatter’s 17 years at the helm of world football will end in disgrace, and spells the end of Plati-

Two last-gasp strikes gave Chennaiyin FC a dramatic 3-2 victo-ry against FC Goa to be crowned champions of the second edition of the Indian Super League at the Fatorda Stadium in Margao on Sunday. Co-lombian Stiven Mendoza scored in the third minute of injury time to complete the turnaround and break the hearts of the thou-

sands of FC Goa fans who packed the stadium. After a goalless first half, the game burst into life in the second. Chennai took the lead through Bruno Pelis-sari before a Thongkho-siem Haokip strike and a Joffre free-kick gave Goa a 2-1 lead with three min-utes to spare. Chennaiyin FC though retaliated with two goals – first a Laxmi-kant Kattimani own goal seconds before full-time

and then a Stiven Men-doza winner during stop-page time. The first clear-cut chance fell Chennai’s way with Bruno Pelissari exchanging a brilliant one-two with Mendo-za before unleashing a left-footed effort just wide of goal in the 17th minute. Goa respond-ed with a Jonatan Lucca free-kick which keeper Apoula Edel put behind for a corner.

So using it effectively will be the key for each team,” she added. The Premier Badminton League will start from

It moved him top of the

International Cricket Council’s world player rankings, the first New Zealand batsman to reach top spot. McCullum and Williamson are the only New Zealanders to score more than 1,000 Test runs in a calendar year, though Williamson, who will end 2015 with 1,172 runs at 90.15, said he did not re-ally focus on milestones.

Yuvraj also said that he was keen on doing well here so that he can make it to the Indian squad for the T20 World Cup. “Sad to have missed out from the ODI’s but I have to do well here. Hopefully I will be picked in the T20

World Cup squad,” he said. The last time Yuvraj played for the national side was in the loss to Sri Lanka in the World Twen-ty20 final in 2014 where he had a horrendous time with 11 runs from 21 balls. Speaking about the time spent on the sideline, the southpaw added: “It was a terrible phase. But now it’s past and I am a lot stronger now.”

Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Ministers of State for Home Kiren Rijiju and Haribhai Parthibhai Chaudhary also took part in the conference on all three days. In a marathon session held yesterday, several issues including terror, ISIS and radical-isation of youths were discussed, while oth-er topics like women’s safety, police reforms,

better inter-state polic-ing, reforms at police station level, steps to bring competitive spirit between police officers, bringing uniformity in police uniforms across India. “There was a de-tailed discussion on many issues, a number of de-cisions were also taken. The PMO gave detailed directions to every state on which compliance re-port will have to be sub-

The slum area-based re-development will have two components — de-velopment of transit-ori-ented zones built on the principle of promoting non-motorised trans-port and provisions of smart infrastructure and the second component of in-situ redevelopment

of slum area that will include residential and commercial components to be developed on a pri-vate-public-partnership (PPP) model. “Among the feedback and sugges-tions invited from city residents through vari-ous mediums to choose among these area op-tions, Sabarmati Ashram received the maximum votes. mind you want to finish Sushma, Advani, Gadkari, Rajnath etc. Why should the people of India trust you?” Joshi, once consid-ered to be a close confi-dant of Modi, had to quit from BJP’s general secre-tary post after a CD of him having sex with a woman appeared in 2005.

Previously, during 2014 Loksabha and 2012 As-sembly elections, similar posters of Joshi had ap-peared causing embar-rassment to state BJP. Joshi visited several of his old-time supporters during the day. He is likely to stay in Ahmedabad on Monday, claimed sources, who added that both state and central intelligence bureau personnel were noticed keeping a close tab on Joshi’s activities. Joshi is widely known as PM Modi’s bete noire

and Gujarat BJP leaders and others had avoided meeting Joshi in pub-lic. However, old feuds seemed to have been left behind at the family func-tion of Togadia. While Joshi avoided speaking to the media, keeping a low profile, sources re-ported he also exchanged pleasantries with the CM and other BJP leaders at the function and mingled freely with them. Joshi at-tended both the wedding ceremony and the recep-tion in evening.
