QUOTE OF THE

DAYThe journey of the Kohinoor: From Golconda to london...!

Seated comfortably with the Crown jewels of the Queen mother at the Tower of London, the Kohinoor diamond has been a bone of contention between the Indian and the British governments for decades. His-tory has it that the British first came into possession of the diamond in 1850 after the conquest of Pun-jab, then under Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Government on Monday told the Supreme Court that Kohinoor diamond was neither “forcibly taken” nor “stolen” by British rulers but given to the East India Compa-ny by the rulers of Punjab. The diamond, however, changed hands several times before finally coming into the ownership of the British. The Kohinoor was first mentioned some 4000 to 5000 years back in some Sanskrit texts. At that period though, it was known by the name ‘Samantika Mani’ (prince and leader among diamonds). According to some myths, the diamond was in the possession of Hindu God Krishna. The origin of the diamond has been placed in the Golconda in Andhra Pradesh. It was mined from the Rayalaseema diamond mine when it was under the rule of the Kakatiya dynasty. Under the rulership of Alauddin Khilji, the second ruler of the Delhi Sultanate dynasty, the Khiljis made successful raids in Southern India. It is believed that the Khiljis came to acquire the diamond in one such expedition at Warangal in 1310. The diamond then kept switch-ing ownership of the succeeding rulers of the Del-hi Sultanate. In 1526 Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, from whom he acquired the diamond. Bubur men-tions the diamond in his memoir, the Baburnama. After Babur, there is record that it adorned Shah Ja-han’s Peacock throne. The Persian monarch, Nadir Shah invaded the Mughal empire in 1739 and therein obtained the diamond. Legend has it that it was Nadir Shah who gave the diamond its current name, ‘koh-i-noor’, which in Persian means mountain of light. Nadir Shah was assassinated in 1747 and his empire disintegrated. After his death, the Kohinoor came into the acquisition of one of his generals, Ahmad Shah Durrani. One of his descendents, Shah Shuja Durrani gave the diamond to Ranjit Singh of Punjab, who in return helped Durrani win back the throne of Afghan-istan. In 1849, the British conquered Punjab and the Lahore treaty was proclaimed. One term in the trea-ty stated that: The gem called Kohinoor which was taken from Shah Shuja-ul-Malik by Maharaja Ran-jit Singh shall be surrendered by the Maharajah of Lahore to the Queen of England. Lord Dalhousie, in 1851, arranged for the Kohinoor to be present-ed to Queen Victoria by Duleep Singh, successor of Ranjit Singh. The presentation of the diamond was a grand event organized in Hyde Park, London. Since then, the Kohinoor has remained in England.

MS Dhoni is a star in the Indian cricketing world. But not many know that the Ranchi lad was a rail-way ticket collector be-fore he became a cricket-er. In fact, Sushant Singh Rajput, who plays Dhoni in an upcoming biopic, even spent some time with Dhoni’s friends, who are still ticket col-lectors, to prepare for his role. “Before he started shooting for the film, Su-shant spent a few weeks with three room-mates of Dhoni, who work as tick-et collectors at Kharag-pur Junction railway sta-tion. That is where Dhoni was posted before he took the cricketing world by storm,” says an insid-er. Apparently, Sushant didn’t just interact with them. He also travelled with them in the trains incognito, and observed

their body language and style of talking. “The ac-tor also ditched the five-star hotels, and stayed with them at the rail-way quarters for all the days that he was there.

He wanted to get a bet-ter idea of their lifestyle. He even played cricket on the same ground that Dhoni used to play on in the city,” adds the insid-er.

The Indian Premier League has seen centu-ries of great impact down the years and Quinton de Kock’s brilliant knock on Sunday could well be the spark that could ignite the campaign of Delhi Dare-devils this season. Chris Gayle’s 175 not out for Royal Challengers Ban-galore demolished Pune

Warriors in 2013 after Brendon McCullum set the IPL on fire in the in-augural season with an explosive 158 not out for Kolkata Knight Riders against RCB De Kock’s 51-ball 108 that laid RCB low at the same Chin-naswamy Stadium could inspire the young Dare-devils batsmen in a team that finished seventh in

Australians and their fielding is probably one of the best love story one can see. The Aussies are simply top-notch in the field. One such moment of brilliance came during Sunday’s encounter be-tween Royal Challeng-ers Bangalore and Delhi Daredevils. Courtesy of Kohli and AB de Villiers,

RCB were able to post a fighting total of 191 in their 20 overs. With Delhi put in chase this humon-gous total, RCB got off to almost the perfect start when Watson and Wiese took a stunner of a catch. Just into the fifth ball of the innings, Shreyas Iyer tried to clear mid-off and hit it for a six. Sensing that Iyer hasn’t timed it to per-

IPL 2 6the group stage in 2015 after ending up last in the previous two years. The 23-year-old South Afri-can became the youngest to score an IPL century, only behind Manish Pan-dey’s 118 not out for RCB against Deccan Chargers in 2009 as a 19-year-old. Brilliant death overs bowling by pacers Mo-hammed Shami and Chris Morris had helped Dare-devils restrict RCB to 191 after Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers had threatened to put up a far bigger to-tal. With Rahul Dravid as mentor, Delhi have cho-sen a young squad, which has pitch-forked de Kock into the role of a senior batsman this season.

fection, Watson and Wiese started running towards the ball. Watson didn’t take his eye off the ball and took a brilliant ‘Kapil Dev’ like catch. However, unable to control his mo-mentum, Watson threw the ball back on the field where Wiese caught hold off it just inches away from the boundary rope to complete a memorable catch. RCB finally lost the match courtesy Quinton de Kock’s brilliant ton but this catch was definite-ly one of the high point for Kohli’s boys. Just 12 matches into the IPL 2016, we can expect more of such amazing catches.

IPl 2016: Mumbai Indians to play ‘home’ matches in Jaipur

Mumbai Indians are set to play three of their re-scheduled games in Jai-pur, IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said on Sunday. “We had given them three options --- Jaipur, Kan-pur and Raipur --- and the franchise has asked for Jaipur to be their venue,” said Shukla. The defend-ing champions will play

three games at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium. “IPL and IMG officials will be going to Rajasthan on Monday to speak to the state government,” said Shukla. The Bombay High Court had ordered the league organisers to shift all home games of Mumbai and Pune Su-pergiants outside the drought-hit Maharashtra after April 30. Mumbai

has already played two games at the Wankhede stadium. They will play two more games at the same venue --- April 20 and 28 --- before shift-ing to Jaipur. Earlier, Jai-pur used to be the home ground of the now-sus-pended Rajasthan Royals. Shukla clarified that the Rajasthan Cricket Asso-ciation, which is under suspension, will not play a part in the organisa-tion the matches. “The stadium is owned by the state government and not by the association. And, in any case, the associa-tion is suspended, not the venue,” added Shukla. On Thursday, Pune had agreed to hold their home games in Visakhapatnam.

Concentration was writ large on her face. She jogged on the spot to warm herself, bent for-ward, eyes focussed on her goal. The determina-tion seen in them belied the nervousness she per-haps felt. And then, amidst applause, she soared high, executing a faultless Tsu-kahara — one of gymnas-tics’ most sophisticated vault routines — which clinched the deal. Last week, 21-year-old Dipa Karmakar became the first woman gymnast and

the second Indian to bag a Bronze medal at the sixth Gymnastics Asian Cham-pionships in Hiroshima. Dipa, who hails from Tri-pura’s Agartala, did not enter into gymnastics by choice. In fact, it was a sport she had abhorred ever since she was initi-ated into it by her father, Dulal, a weightlifting coach. She was afraid of falling! However, with the passage of time, not only did she get used to the sport and over-come her apprehensions and dislike, she also be-

gan nurturing a burning need to carve a niche for herself. Trained by B.S. Nandi and Kaplana Debnath in Agartala, she improved in leaps and bounds. Dipa came into the limelight last year at the Commonwealth Games (CWG) held in Glasgow, Scotland and won a Bronze, making it India’s first-ever med-al by a woman gymnast in the CWG. If you are familiar with the nuanc-es of gymnastics, you would know that the word ‘Produnova’ is ut-tered in tones of rever-ence. It is the Everest of gymnastics, the avada kedavra of the dark arts. Despite missing out on the gold and silver, it is for her flawless execu-tion of the Produnova — a vault that consists of a front handspring and two front somersaults— that Dipa won her medal.

Uttarakhand crisis: HC questions Centre’s ‘interference’ in state affairs Mark Wood could miss upcoming

England summer due to ankle injuryAgency | London

Mark Wood, the England fast bowler, could miss the entire upcoming in-ternational summer as he is likely to go under the knife once again to repair his troublesome left an-kle, according to reports. The 26-year-old, who has been out of action since missing the Sharjah Test in November 2015 due to ankle injury, was expect-ed to make a comeback during Durham’s season opener, but pulled out late and travelled to the Netherlands to consult a specialist. The Ashing-ton-born bowler, who earlier underwent sur-gery for a problem at the front of his ankle, is now having trouble near the back of his ankle. He had an injection last week, but it did not yield de-sired results, according

to a said. If a surgery is required, Wood will miss England’s summer where they host Sri Lanka (3 Tests, 5 ODIs, 1 T20I) and Pakistan (4 Tests, 5 ODIs, 1 T20I)) spanning from May 19 to Septem-ber 7. The right-arm pac-er bowls at a brisk pace with a considerably short

run-up and his bowling action is said to have put a lot of pressure on his front leg (left leg), re-sulting in him being inju-ry-prone. Wood was im-pressive during the 2015 Ashes and also did well in the Dubai Test against Pakistan - his last inter-national appearance.

The Uttarakhand High Court on Monday asked the Centre whether it was not “totally extrane-ous” for the Union Gov-ernment to be concerned over the disqualification of nine rebel MLAs and to “interfere” in the af-fairs of the state which has to be done only in “extraordinary instanc-es”. “What is passing through our mind is, is it the lookout of the Central government as to what would have happened on March 28 (when floor test was to be held) in view of the changed composition and in view of the nine ousted MLAs..? “Will it not be totally extraneous for Central government, which is ruled by anoth-er political party, to be concerned by changed composition…,” a bench of Chief Justice K M Jo-seph and Justice V K Bist asked Attorney General

Mukul Rohatgi. The bench was hearing a writ peti-tion of the ousted Chief Minister Harish Rawat plea challenging impo-sition of President’s rule on March 26. The bench said it (the demand for di-vision of votes in the As-sembly when appropria-tion Bill was introduced) was only a “solitary in-stance” and added “this is what is colouring our minds. Can one solitary instance topple a dem-ocratically-elected gov-ernment in its fourth-fifth year… root of the matter is you are cutting at root of democracy”. Attorney

General Mukul Rohatgi contended that the Speak-er’s decision to not al-low 35 MLAs to vote on their demand for division, when the money bill was introduced, amounted to “destroying democracy” as the 35 constituted the majority view. He alleged that former Chief Min-ister Harish Rawat and the Speaker were “in ca-hoots” and “scuttled the demand for division”. He claimed that since no vote was held, the mon-ey bill had failed and this amounted to the state government having fallen on March 18.

The proposed bullet train between Mumbai and Ahmedabad will have to ferry 88,000 - 118,000 passengers per day, or un-dertake 100 trips daily, for the Railways to keep it fi-nancially viable, accord-ing to a report by Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A). The Thane police are on the lookout for the ‘king-pin’ of the gang that was busted on Saturday fol-lowing the seizure of banned drug Ephedrine worth Rs 2,000 crore from the Solapur facility of a chemical manufac-turing firm. While the po-lice have so far arrested five persons, including the firm’s senior produc-tion manager, they be-lieve that the kingpin is a

person brought in to the company nearly a year ago, who would oversee the drugs being distrib-uted for unauthorised use in the city.Ephedrine, the sale of which is banned in India, is popularly used overseas to treat asthma and bronchitis. While controlled dosage eas-es breathing, its abuse, popularly in the powder form, is known to cause euphoria, hypertension and nausea. It is synthe-sised to produce the pop-

ular narcotic Metham-phetamine. On April 10. the police had arrested a Nigerian national, Si-pren Chinassa, who was allegedly smuggling 500 grams of Ephedrine in Kalyan. His interroga-tion had led to the arrest of three others, includ-ing a Solapur resident. Based on their interroga-tion, Avon Lifesciences Limited office in Solapur MIDC was raided, and 18.5 tonnes of Ephedrine allegedly recovered. The police then eventually ar-rested the senior produc-tion manager of the unit. A senior officer, request-ing anonymity, said they are pursuing several leads in the case, including that of a Polish drug cartel be-ing in contact with the ar-rested accused.

Former BJP general sec-retary Sanjay Joshi was in Ahmedabad on Sunday to meet old party colleagues and attend a couple of weddings in the city. Joshi returned to Delhi in the night. He also met former state Health Minister Jay Narayan Vyas in the after-noon for about 15 minutes along with his friends. “We had a chat for some time and it was a courte-sy call only,” Joshi said. When asked, if Joshi was here to play mediator be-

tween the Patidar leaders and the government, Vyas said he did not see any such role. “I categorically deny that Joshi was here to play any such interme-diary role in the ongoing problem…it is a coinci-dence that he happens to be in the state on a day like this,” Vyas said of Joshi’s visit. Earlier in the day, Joshi visited senior leader Dattaji Chirandas. Mean-while, state BJP president Vijay Rupani said he was not aware of Joshi’s visit to Ahmedabad.

Chief Secretary of Guja-rat State, G.R. Aloria on Sunday held meeting in Ahmedabad Circuit house on law and order situa-tion in connection with Patidar stir. Aloria said police used tear gas and water canon in Mahesana and fired round in air and therefore there’s no cau-sality. Aloria praised po-lice force for showing re-straint while dealing with Patidar mob in Mahesana. Aloria clarified that Pati-dar agitation leader Lalji Patel had suffered head injury due to stone pelting and not due to cane charge by police. He said on the contrary police took Lal-ji Patel to medical facili-ty. Aloria said permission was given to Patidar out-fit for meeting but not for rally in Mahesana. He said five ST buses were torched

at various places across the state, two government buildings were torched in Mahesana, 435 persons were arrested in Surat, and barring Bhavnagar and Morbi where road blockades were attempt-ed there’s peace allover in Gujarat. He said Rapid Action Force teams are sent to Surat and Mahesa-na and 116 State Reserve Police Force and paramil-itary teams are sent to dis-

tricts as per their demand. The state government is in contact with central gov-ernment for allocation of additional 10 companies if needed in future. Celebratory firing at Jadeja’s marriage: DGP says it’s lesser compared to UP

Sunvilla News | Gandhinagar

Gujarat in-charge DGP P P Pandey today termed as a “minor issue” the cele-bratory firing at wedding ceremony of cricketer Ravindra Jadeja, saying in his home state of Ut-tar Pradesh such practice is common where at least 100 rounds are typically fired in every marriage. “It’s a minor issue. I am from UP. Hundred to two hundred rounds are fired in every marriage there,” Pandey told television re-porters who asked him to comment on the celebra-tory firing at the cricket-er’s wedding in Rajkot yesterday. He said such

incidents are not “un-common in marriages” in Uttar Pradesh. The 27-year-old left-handed batsman tied the nuptial

knot with Riva Solanki in a ceremony at Rajkot where a reveller opened celebratory firing in the air.
